Yikes-- more range hood ?s
Comments (8)Lots of questions! Some thoughts: Yes, remote blower can be use with horizontal duct run. Could use an external blower mounted on the wall, or, if you had the room (i.e. the duct is running through an attic), an inline blower. 48'' BS range?? You need major cfm. I would get as much as the budget allows, at least 1200 cfm. I think 600 cfm would be way short of what you'd want when you're searing over 22,000 BTU's. Modern Aire will sell to you direct if they don't have a local dealer. I just placed my order with them. They have been unbelievably helpful: ask for Jeff Herman if you need advice. We have a VAH at the lake, and despite some of my reservations, it's still a good solid hood. For our main house though I clearly wanted major league cfm, with a remote blower and am going with the Modern Aire liner, and the Fantech FKD 10XL 1200 cfm inline blower and the Fantech silencer which will go into our attic. I love the flexibility of the Modern Aire (for the roughly $165 custom charge I have been able to specify the exact width, length, and location of the ductwork to the inch)....See MoreGE Cafe 30" Gas Range - Hood recommendations?
Comments (0)I just purchased the GE Cafe package of appliances with a 30" range for my kitchen renovation. (pheww my first purchase ahhhhh!) My first of many question on this reno is....What hood do you recommend for a 30" range?. I have a clean modern taste. I will probably do a chimney style hood. I was looking at the XO - XOB 600CFM's. My brother swears that I have to get a (more expensive) remote blower for a hood. He says otherwise it will be too loud. Do you really think that is necessary? I rarely use the fan now on my existing kitchen with basic sears type range with microwave above. My Kitchen will be a lot more open to my living dining room area now...but this just doesnt; seem to be such a big deal to me am I missing something? Thanks this site has already been a huge help in Kitchen planning...I am excited to get the ball rolling and move on this kitchen : )...See MoreKeeping Vintage Cabinets:Farrow & Ball Paint? Need Frig & Hood
Comments (1)It's pretty common for older homes not to have range hoods, but happily looks like it should be relatively easy to add, from your photo. You can cook without it till you get to it, though. (We've been cooking without one for three years, and previous owners cooked without it for 90-odd years before then!) We don't have our fridge yet so I can't comment on performance, but it does meet your height requirement---the Fisher & Paykel single door bottom freezer. I really like the interior and freezer designs, though again, we haven't used it yet. Needs 69" of height for venting and 33" of width (can't tell how much space you have there?), comes in stainless (and also white), and is pretty reasonably priced. We're buying ours locally, which also ended up being the cheapest option, for whatever that's worth. Good luck---and I love your stainless countertops!...See MoreIf you have a range hood with 400CFM+, do you have a make up air kit?
Comments (8)Hello with an update: So, I contacted many HVAC companies and it was a hassle to even get them to understand what I wanted. Most have never even heard about Make up air... The company that serves our HVAC unit sent someone and gave us an estimate of $1500.00 to do the make up air through the HVAC system (but they were upfront they had never done this before and actually took a while to do their research into Fairfax code, etc..). I had another HVAC contractor give me the same quote. I kept looking (with no luck) and then I had the idea of calling Bray and Scarf (sp?) to ask them for a recommendation, since I am pretty sure they sell this kind of hood. They told me to call R.A. Dobson (heating, ac and plumbing) and they came over. They wanted to do something simpler, without involving the HVAC unit. George (their guy) said he didn't think the HVAC could support and work efficiently with the addition of the make up air damper. He gave me a quote of $1400.00. At this point, I have decided to just have my contractor do the simple version of it, without involving the HVAC unit and he is charging me $1200.00. I went with him because his price includes everything, including fixing the walls, the roof part, etc. The other companies don't fix dry wall or deal with the roof part. But yeah, if I had known it was so complicated and expensive would have gone down to a 300 CFM hood....See More- 13 years ago
