Shower sill / curb cap question!

I didn't plan for the material for the shower sill/curb top - I just assumed we would use the floor tile. I've done my research here now and see that most seem to prefer a one piece curb cap, typically marble, granite etc.

Home Depot etc. carry two colours of sills - Carrara and a beige type marble. Neither seem ideal to me for my colour scheme.

Are there alternatives out there short of buying a whole slab of corian or quartz for something like this? And then you have to finish the edges, not cheap I imagine.

Or do I just suck it up and go for the Carrara sill? Perhaps a particularly muddy gray Carrara?

My floor tile is very dark gray, the tile below on my shower wall, white with some brownish/beige in the background.

You can contact a local cabinet shop that does Corian/Solid Surface counters. They usually have scrap pieces left over that they can make a threshold with.

That's what we did in the past (and are getting ready to do again) for a shower seat.

Or try a granite/stone yard. We got our 2 stone thresholds (shower stall and main room door) for $50 - finished and cut to order. If I recall, the not as nice ones at Lowes/HD were about $20 each anyway. So I got nicer stone that matched beautifully.

Add this to my previous: If the glass will be pulled, then work out the scope of work and responsibility ahead of time. In writing. In a perfect world you'd have the glass company come out and remove the glass, then when the repairs are done, they come back out to reset the glass. That'll usually cost $$$. That money does not come out of your pocket. Your tiler can pay for them to do that. He may insist he can do it himself, with the caveat that he is accepting full responsibility for damage to any of the glass panels. And that's where the problems arise. Will he pony up $500 or $2500 for new glass if he shatters a panel? I'd let him have that responsibility only after he gives you a deposit of the $500 or $2500 that the replacement glass would cost. The glass breaks, you have cash on hand for new glass. If the repairs go fine with no damage, he gets the full amount back.

There are many ways to achieve a nice finished edge when stopping tiles part way up a wall. 1). The simplest is to just end the tile and when grouting bevel the grout back to the drywall with a slight angle. This looks nice and I find most people prefer this look. If the tile is quite thick this look can be strong statement and we find it looks better with thinner wall tile than it does with floor tile installed on a wall. 2). Using a profile edge you can add colour, or go with chrome, brushed nickel, white etc. These profiles are usually curved like a quarter round or with sharp angles. Schulter makes many we have used with good success. I find many people find this look is to sharp, to cold and not in keeping with the overall look or feel of the room. These edge details can also collect dust and look terrible if the wall is not nice and flat. The pieces can look tacky if they are scratched (and they do scratch being chrome plated plastic or aluminum most times), or cut with hand snips or a hacksaw. A non-ferrous blade on a chop saw give clean factory edges every time. 3). The bullnose tile - a bull nose tile can finish off this look with ease and make life easy. The problem is there is never the right bullnose for all the different jobs. The good news is most skilled setters pride themselves on these custom pieces and can make job site bull nose tiles and built up profile tiles for you on sight if given the time and funds to make every square inch perfect. 4). The hardest look to achieve is the flush finish. You can adjust the walls drywall thickness to meet the finished tile thickness with some careful planning. I have yet to have a client go this far but we have started incorporating this type of detail on the vertical transitions from wall board to tile at the shower entry with great results. 5). Mouldings and accent pieces. We have finished transitions with chair rail, solid stock metal and full length mirrors. The sky is the limit and the end result of your reno shows in these small details. Good Luck.

The shower membrane (out of sight under the tile) should have been carried up and over the top of the curb with no penetrations through it on both the inside curb surface and the top curb surface. So in a proper shower, any water getting on the curb that then gets under the curb topping (cracks in grout, etc) should hit the membrane, flow into the shower (under the tile), and still exit the shower via the secondary weep holes and then go down the drain. If the water is getting under the curb and passing down the outside (non-shower) face of the curb, I suppose that's how it could then be getting into your framing if your membrane is intact and properly installed. If your membrane is in fine shape, and it's just water leaking down the outside, redoing things as you say could work. -Remove the shower enclosure. -Remove the curb. -Cut a new "L-shaped" piece just for the corner. It can be cut from a square piece of stone, whatever will match the new curb. -Then cut two legs that will run from that corner piece to each wall. You'll end up with a 3-piece curb. This way you'll have no curb seams at the corner. -Ideally, you can bevel the shower-side top inside edges of the curb. That way you can set the curb topping flat on the curb itself, the shower walls will sit flat on the curb, but the top of the curb that's inside the shower will be sloped to drain into the shower due to the bevel. Gwettin away from that possible solution, a coupe of questions: If that 45 miter in the shower frame leaks now despite your attempts at sealing it, it's still going to leak later, right? Do you feel confident enough that the solid, non-mitered curb under the 45 and the sloped/beveled top of the new curb will be sufficient to contain water? Are there any penetrations through the top of the curb that could be leaking? Any screws holding the frame's bottom channel to the curb that might be providing a path for the water to get past curb surface and under the membrane? Best of luck, water leaks can be tough.

"Is there anything that can be done at this stage to increase the height about a half inch to an inch-short of starting over?" I think what you have is adequate, but you can certainly go higher for peace of mind should you desire. Since you have RedGard, your installer could built up the top of the curb however much you desire. His methods for build-up can vary depending on the structure of the existing curb as well as what is going on top of the finished curb cap (glass, nothing, etc). He can detail it as required, then RedGard the build-up, making the waterproofing integral with what already exists. Then proceed with tiling. If a shower is 42" square and goes from 2" water depth at the drain to 1" water depth at the curb, the volume of water that shower can hold is 42 x 42 x 1-1/2, or about 2650 cubic inches, the equivalent of about 11-1/2 gallons of water. With a 2-1/2GPM shower head, your drain would have to be fully blocked and the shower would have to run unattended for 4-1/2 minutes before it started to overflow. I'm in CT, thus the "MongoCT". I just went to a local granite yard where they had a remnant that was a good match to our counter tops. They gave me the remnant for free and charged something like 40.00 to fabricate it.

You need to make sure that whatever you use is strong enough and will never crack. I seriously doubt those travertine transitions sold at the big box stores would be strong enough. Not to mention that they are butt ugly. We have one in the doorway of our powder room and I pray for the day we can have it replaced with something nicer.

Thanks for the advice. My contractor wants to do this tomorrow - can the threshold be done after everything else is complete? I don't have time to visit stone yards before the weekend to try to find something that works with the floor.

That said, the Carrara is gray (light) and it might not be bad with the dark gray floor tiles. We don't have any stone counter to match it to unfortunately (counter is walnut).

My fabricator was able to turn around in 1 day. That said, it there nothing else the the contractor can do until next week? Paint maybe? Seems to me that he should have made it clear to you that you need those pieces so if this puts him off schedule, it's his problem.

However, I do think you could find a "muddy" piece and use that - I don't think it's a huge deal (but I will say I look at mine a lot and smile at how well they match with the color on the floor/shower tile :) )

Local tile shops may sell stone windowsills or curbs that may work. We got ours at a place called Tapcu in Atlanta. We used white marble ones for the shelves in the subway tile tubs and walnut travertine for boys showers (they have walnut travertine porcelain tile walls). We used ivory travertine for our master shower. They were very reasonably priced and very high quality (2 cm thick and very sturdy).

They were prefabricated, so just had to be cut to size.

A couple of quick thoughts.

1. Unless the contractor wants to install something such as a shower door (that requires making holes in the curb) tomorrow, the installation of the curb/threshold certainly can wait. It just gets glued in place and then caulked. So unless tomorrow is the last day, it shouldn't throw the work flow off.

2. Like KathyNY76, our fabricator also was able to turn around the work in 1 day. That was for a 65" curb/threshold and a 45" long top for the pony wall with very simple edges. (Our tile guy did the installation. He asked that the fabricator make the curb two inches longer; he cut it to the final size).

3. It may be a matter of semantics and/or regional differences, but here in New England it's the fabricators who have the remnants and not the stone yards. Still requires a bit of looking, though. You should be able to find a couple of options that coordinate with your tile and the look and feel of the room.
