Big Lots excursion

I stopped off at BL after having dinner with a girlfriend tonight. Saw the Pier One furniture and accessories. Also checked to see if the big resin roosters had been marked down yet--they haven't and there are only two left and none at the other store. Have to decide if I WANT one bad enough to pay $25.00 for it! They also had some green roosters and chickens that were sort of cute, those were $12.00 each. And there were a few of the tall footed glass jars like Tamgypsy had in her window at Easter. They were $17.00 each. Kept looking at them wondering if I could find a place for one. But then I'd probably want others of various heights too. I need a bigger house, I think. Didn't see any neat candle holders and really wasn't too impressed with any of the patriotic items. Anybody else been out looking at things? Luvs

Luvs, I'm trying to remember where I was looking at big roosters too, and they were also $25, but it wasn't BL, I haven't been to ours in ages, our store is rather messy & lame. I've been to other bigger ones in other towns & they had a lot more to offer.

I think it was at Linens & Things, I wanted to remember to watch if they mark theirs down too. That big one Judith used in a tablesetting looked so neat. I haven't been in a store to look at anything since yard sales started, I'll do that when I'm bored again in the winter.

Darn Luvs, guess I need to check out the Big Lots later this week and see what they might have. I'd selectively forgotten about that store. LOL. Till you reminded me.

The only person I've actually seen from garden web is Dax , from his posts with huge trees he posts here. He usually stands or squats down beside the trees. Ken has posted a pic or 2 of his son with red hair, so Ken is likely Caucasian, fair skinned. And I think there is a older guy with white beard and has a mature or near mature conifer forest, and comes here sometimes to the tree forum, but is a conifer guy. He posted his pic and his trees have huge roots that grow over boulders, down into the soil . That's all I remember. The rest, the imagination guesses.

Nicole, Come with, the next trip maybe in 2 weeks, I might also go this week to exchange a plant. So you are invited to the next lunchon.. I will email you when we have an exact date, but it will be either a Monday or a Wed because one of the regulars works for Oceanside PD and those are her days off. Jennie, You can always come visit. If you ever come to So Cal, Carls bad is a GORGEOUS place to come relax, unwind and enjoy yearself at. If you have kids Lego Land is there and the beaches are GORGEOUS. Thera are also hotels for all budgets, Lacosta and the Four Seasons are the 2 high end ones and are right on the Lagoon and near the beach so the views are the BOMB. Let me know if you ever come out.

Big yard with lots of neglect - where to start?

Hoovb is very wise and also I agree with everyone else on the wood chips. You want to get rid of any really tough weeds that come along first if you will be replanting in an area. Water very well and see what's there one section at a time. I think you have to decide if you just need something presentable as you pass through it or look at it from your windows ( green, tidy, low maintenance ) or if you want something more ( someplace to be actively gardening or really make a statement with the plants ) If you want to make a statement, you may be completely reworking areas and so it will be more time to accomplish without lots of money but in the end, its a statement of your personality and you have created a space that is unique and special that gives you joy. If you want something less personal, just presentable, then research what low maintenance plants would be best for the area and look nice most of the year. Some plants look spectacularly bad some times of the year and some look spectacularly bad if they arent groomed, thinned out, old flowers cleaned, etc. In any case every green space looks bad if theres a weed party going on so deep piles of wood chips to start are great advice. Think hard what you want to do with the precious space. Do you even want it mostly garden? Maybe a big deck over part of the slope and some garden would please you more. Might be cheaper too over time. I would go for as much garden as I could get but I love a challenge.

Gosh I haven't been to Big Lots in a while, I have been doing some intensive gardening with this good weather. I know I am missing out, on some good stuff from what you are telling me! Decisons...yard plants or dishes... a tuff call for me. LOL

Oh, Judith, seeing your post made me remember. They had a different kind of cupcake holder. It held 24 cupcakes and was four tiers high. The cupcake holder was made of plastic trays with little indentations for the cupcakes. Only $8.00 and very pretty--especially loaded with yummy cupcakes! ;o)

Have you finished your cake decorating class? And did you order some of the faux cupcakes from that website? Hope you will share pics of both with us.

Luvs, Oh, that plastic cup cake holder would be cool! I will have to check it out this weekend. I am still taking cake classes, some I have had before, but they are good to take to get a "refresher" too, but it is wearing me out with all the stuff I have to do around the house/yard this time of year.

I emailed the lady about the faux cupcakes with my specifics, but she never emailed me back. I would have loved to have had the faux cake base to use as a confectionary christmas tree base. I will probably try her again, later, maybe she was busy. Oh well....

luvstocraft, if you are looking for roosters, there is a cute one on Tenderhearts. It is 24 inches tall and has a french country look. The price is $41.95 (could be on sale at their website tho) Would make a nice doorstop. It says it is metal with a distressd finish. I'll have to check to see if it is on sale, although I should let my credit c. cool off! LOL!

Luvs, Sounds like Big Lots has lots of nice goodies right now. I'm scared to go! LOL I need too much for outside right now so have to be really careful shopping. I'm not a strong person! ;~)

Mary, I'll have to take a look at the TH rooster. That price is way too steep for me. I don't normally decorate with roosters, just got interested after seeing Judith's gorgeous ones in centerpieces and Karen's vignettes with them. I only own one--a pretty candy dish from Marshal's for $3.99. LOL

Sandi, most of my outdoor planting is done, just need a few more things. BUT, I do need to look for some clothes before our vacation comes up. I am not a clothes shopper--just do that out of necessity. Because of that, I keep holding back on buying dish stuff too right now. ;o(
