New microwave in 2 hrs, please help

Well, my husband is out of town for the week and I'm here at home, 8 months pregnant, with a toddler to care for. So OF COURSE my microwave chooses today to start pouring smoke as I'm trying to heat up some soup for my son's lunch. :( I can't live without a microwave so I have to go buy one today as soon as he wakes up from his nap. I don't have time to do my usual appliance research before buying. I could go to Lowes or Home Depot or Menards to buy one. It has to be a countertop model and fit in an area 23 1/2" wide and 18" tall and it has to be stainless. Do you have any suggestions? I'm going to cross-post this in both the kitchen and appliances section in hopes that someone will see it and give advice in the next two hours. Otherwise I'll just go buy whatever....

Per consumers reports, most MW have similar reliability, except for KitchenAid, which is by far the worst. So, rule them out.

Next, per the Sears web site (which is really excellent for choosing appliances based on criteria like color, size, and features), they appear to have seven models that fit your requirements, from Daewoo, Panasonic, Amana, GE, and Sharp. I used Metalic and Stainless as the colors, and a width of 21-22 inches.

You should check out the Sears web site, look at the models there, and then go shopping.

Tulakivi is great if you have the room and the cash. Advantium is cool or not because it cooks with a lightbulb. helps brown things and speeds cooking. Dacor/Thermador/Viking/Wolf/DCS/Gaggenau are all pretty much the same combo unit. Nice microwave with a convection element/fan for baking functions. Shop on control layout pleasing looks and price they are all made by Sharp or Panasonic and only real difference is the paint job. To me the only real oven / micro is the Miele speed oven if you seriously want to use as an oven. It has a drop down door too, and is the only one with a bottom + top + convection element just like the one in you T'dor range. It is as expensive or more than the Advantium. The previously mentioned brands are fine if you want to bake scalloped potatoes, a few biscuits, a pie or small frozen pizza. FOr serious baking it's a bit lacking. in performance and rack space. I have the Wolf version currently and Dacor 3 yrs ago. Also have the Miele at another house.

Shaun, if you still have that thread could you post it..it was Jan 2005. I must have just printed it out one time when I was deleting a lot of saved html files. Basically she used some Adobe seasoning, sazon, garlic powder and black pepper, poked holes in the roast and rubbed the seasoning in, and then rubbed it with olive oil. In the bottom of the marinade pan/pot she added sliced onions and white wine. I am marinating mine in Mojo Criollo and and will brown it in olive oil. LindaC says to then put it in a covered roaster and cook for 5 hrs (Shaun's was a 8lb roast) @ 325. Baste every hour and then more frequently after 2.5 hrs. In the last hour push the onions off the top of the pork ( so I guess they are on top for the majority of cooking. I'd say that means a whole lotta onions.) When done to fork tender, tent meat, skim fat and make gravy which will be quite dark. And even better, I'll ask Sol to give her details. Maureen

I've been very happy with our Panasonic with invertor technology. I picked it up at Target a few years back. It is 20" wide and 12" tall. I think it does a great job at "softening butter"--maybe I'm just getting better with mw's, but I seem to be able to soften butter through rather than have the inside hard and outside liquid. My Electrician was asking me where I planned to install my microwave -- he assumed I was going to do a built-in. Nope, just plugging in my $60-65 guy on the countertop, close to where I keep the dishes I'd microwave on. Yes, the fridge is further into the kitchen, but on the way out I'll microwave, and then walk out to the dining region (or outdoors) to eat. I guess most food I nuke is either for hot tea, takeout leftovers, and occasionally parmesan'd asparagus. Serve on whatever I nuke the food item on/in! Having it on the counter on the way out to the dining table is also useful if I host pot lucks. If I get tired of having appliances on the counter top, I can always put them in the pantry -- but I don't want to be moving it in and out especially if guests are going to be using it. (I will store *ugly* appliances in the pantry, or under the counters.... my crock pot is hopelessly stained, for instance.) I don't use it all that often, but often enough.

You have probably already bought one but I really like GE micros.
With our new kitchen space, a GE would not fit the shelf so I bought a Panasonic Inverter and like it, too.

Thanks for your help everyone who offered advice! I really appreciate it. I ended up going with a "Sharp" model.

As for you, bbqbear, after a stressful morning, I can't think of anything nicer than getting a "curmudgeonly" and unnecessarily rude comment on a thread where I was politely seeking advice. What an asset to the forum you are. With guests coming later this week, my husband out of town and meals prepared in advance in the freezer, a microwave is pretty integral to my life this week. So thanks for going out of your way to make my day a little less bright.
