I called Sharpie one time because DD got hold of one of their black markers. They recommended alcohol. It lightened the marks significantly. But the older ones that had time to sit were a bit more stubborn.

Try that greasy hand cleaner.....intended to clean paint off your hands. It works on ball point pen on white leather....may remove the marks.

A Mr Clean eraser might work.

Try Grease Lighting. I used it on my kitchen cabinets and it took the paint off it was so strong. I used it full strength from a spray bottle.

There is another one that removed paint from the sleeves of DH's new jacket, but I can't think of the name of it right now. It also took black marks out of green carpet.

I second the Mr Clean suggestion. My one-year old got ahold of a Sharpie and scribbled all over the hardwood floor, two cabinet doors, the kitchen vinyl floor, and the wallpaper and a metal heat register. I tried everything from naptha (dry=cleaning fluid) to goof off, and some of it lightened but you could still see it everywhere. The Mr Clean Majic Eraser got it off immediately, though it took a little elbow grease.

I have removed ink with hair spray, which melts the ink. It is the kind of alcohol in the hair spray. Then just wash it off with warm soapy water. Might work on the hardware.

Swiffer wet cloths will remove Sharpie marker.

Wet a cotton ball with alcohol and dip into baking soda and rub.

My son used a black Sharpie to decorate every room in the house a while back, including an antigue marble top table!!! I used some 95 % grain alcohol and viola! The marble came clean with no problem and most of the other stains as well. Of course the alcohol will also remove polyurethane and other coatings too so be careful! And before anyone asks, I only have grain alcohol because hubby uses it to clean antique coins.

i used baking soda to remove permanent marker from our counter tops... i made a paste - and let it set for awile - the key is to keep it moist - and it wiped off with a little elbow grease - i am not sure if that would scratch the finish on hardware - you may want to try it on an inconspicuous spot first to check for scratching...

Yes, another marker. This actually happen. Substituting in a local high school one day, I mistakedly used a permanant marker to write on dry erase board in class room. After trying several times to erase the board, one of the kids came up to the board and wrote over my writing with the dry erase marker, and then while it was still wet, erased the writing completely off the board. I was impressed by that, then asked the students how they knew how to erase permanant marker ink off the board like that. They told me their chemistry teacher showed them how to do it.

Yes, stalks 05 is right! We removed permanant marker writing from an enameld breaker panel by going over it with a dry erase marker, then wiping with a paper towel. Amazing.

I bought this adorable little "picture/frame" (for lack of a better word for it) today at a resale shop. It opens like a book, has a beautiful picture on the left and a lovely saying by Emily Dickinson on the right. Well, someone marked the cost of the item on the back in permanent marker. The backing is some type of heavy gold-tone metal and I thought I'd never get it off. I read this forum and first tried the Swiffer wet cloth. It got 99% of the marker off. I then used hairspray which got the remainder off. Thank you all soooooo much!

Mr. Clean Magic Eraser sponge removes perm. marker off hard surfaces! Someone thought they were an artist and had drawn designs all over a lap top computer that my husband was working on from a customer that had just bought it off them and wanted the scribble off. MCMES took it off!

Dry erase marker over permanent marker will take the permanent marker off as stalks and Babka stated. My daughter showed me this one day, I tried it and it works!
