mirrors: ready made or custom cut?

We are at the end of a new home build and I'm a little burnt out on decision making. Our house is modern and I want plain rectangular mirrors over all bathroom sinks. Our glass store quoted $4.50 per sq. ft. Is this comparable to mirrors already cut? I don't have it in me to shop around anymore. My cabinet maker will be framing 2 of them. Thanks for any help.

If the quote is for a good quality mirror and beveled then it is good.

Tanem, that sounds like a great price. I just had a custom 29.25" square mirror cut, with just polished edges, and my price was about 2.5 times yours -- $11.25/square foot. (It was the last piece of this bathroom, and at $70, I didn't feel like shopping it around more to see if I could save $20 or $30.) I priced an in-stock mirror at Home Depot and I think it was just about, or slightly less than, what your glass store is quoting. So yes, it's a decent price!

If you want to "hang" the mirror by the frame, then a weak frame could be a liability. I've built many custom mirrors over the years, probably 3 or 4 for each house I've built. You can have them built from scratch for a few hundred dollars. You can sometimes take a store-bought frame that might be a little flimsy and back it with a piece of 1/4" luan and staple the luan to the frame. That'll stiffen the frame and joints. This does depend on the width of the frame though, it might not work with narrow frames. You can paint the edges of the luan black to minimize them showing from the side. The easiest is what has been mentioned, hang the mirror glass on the wall, then build the frame over and around it. The frame holds no weight an the mirror will never tilt. When hanging heavy or large custom mirrors that I've built, I usually hang them with a french cleat. Should the need arise, the french cleat makes it easy to remove the mirror from the wall. You will have 60" of mirror and only 72" of vanity. That's not enough room for proper negative space around them. You only have 12" of room in between them if you line them up with the edge of the vanity right against the wall----and that might not center them over the bowls. They are 36" tall, and with a 36" tall vanity, plus a 4" backsplash, that puts the majority of the glass over your head rather than at eye level. It will feel like you are a kid brushing your teeth at the "big peoples" vanity to have so much glass high up. If you have the shorter 32" vanities and skip a backsplash, the height might work, but you're still left with the width issue.

A nice national frame store is Aaron Bros--see if there's one not too far away from you. I have never found archival-quality Pottery Barn-type frames at Michaels and ACMoore. So I usually get my stuff online--Dick Blick, Exposures, ArtCityFrame are some of the places I've found. Also check out, online, Light Impressions and University Products. In my Northern Virginia area, the Pearl Art chain and a very small art store with a few locations, Plaza Art, frequently have some. Nielsen Bainbridge is a manufacturer that makes what you want, too. Go to their online site to see if it can direct you to vendors in your area (otherwise Dick Blick online, as well as a number of other online sites, has them). The places I've mentioned certainly stock ready-made sizes. Dunno if they can do custom sizes, although when I want to have matching frames, I just buy a slightly larger ready-made frame and go to a framing shop to custom-cut a plain white archival mat. (but then again, I like some of my mats cut off-center, or "weighted," so they look OK to me.)

Yes I love the magazine, the channel and anything that has to do with interior design and COLOR. If this post stays around (not sure if they automatically delete after some time) I will keep you all posted. I purchased All of my materials, and I'm renting studio space. The items im selling include: Hard goods: Wood Picture frames, artwork, candles, lamps, hanging planters and flower holders, vases, cylinders, trays, bowls, mirrors. Soft goods: duvets, curtains, pillows, shams, headboards, throws, romans, lampshades, table runners, napkins. I purchased Beautiful Linen, Silk and Cotton Velvet, Cotton Sateen, Sheer and Flannel fabrics. Everything will be handmade and hand dyed. I took a bunch of classes in woodworking, pottery, sewing, painting/drawing because I thought I would be making everything myself. But now I have the HELP of a potter, a painter, a fabric dyer, a woodworker and soon a seamstress. I have an entire plan I won't bore you with. But thank you for listening! Once my samples are made I'm planning to launch by the end of the summer.

Be sure to see a sample of the mirror you will be ordering. There are different quality levels. If you want heavy glass plate, then clarity will be a concern. Cheaper grades of glass will have a greener tint. More expensive grades will have less color. The color issue is less of a concern if you choose a thinner glass, but you will still want to see a sample.

In a bathroom, you definitely don't want a mirror to impart a greenish tint.

You also want to make sure it's not the type of mirror that has a slight distortion or warping effect. (It's bad enough to have to look in the mirror at all sometimes eh!)
