For those of you who have dogs that shed and have a problem keeping up with the fur, as an owner of three cats and two dogs, I have some tips that my friend, a licensed veterinarian, gave me.

First, always add 1-2 tablespoons olive oil to their dry food & mix it in. Cats and Dogs. Aids in digestion, keeps their coat shiny, and helps to alleviate skin problems. This also helps with lessening animal dander.

Second, if you bathe your animals, don't use cheap store bought shampoo/conditioner that are known to have high perfume content. This will only make your pets shed worse. I use Vet Solutions Aloe & Oatmeal Skin & Coat Shampoo & Conditioner. My vet sells it, but I can also get it at Petco, Pet World and most local pet stores. Any good quality product will do, the less perfume the better. Most importantly, make sure you use a conditioner. This makes a HUGE difference. Their coat will be softer, shinier, and they will shed so much less.

Third, their coat has a lot to do with their diet. A good quality pet food will be very beneficial. Eukanuba is good, but my dog prefers the Nutro brand. Both are very good quality products. My dogs have no skin problems.

Less shedding means less vacuming for me.

I have a Hoover Windtunnel upright bag vacume cleaner with a special attachment for pet owners - this is a lifesaver. It attaches to the end of your hose, but rather than doing the brushing manually, it has a brush on the end that spins and picks up all the hair for you. I got it at Sears. With three cats and two dogs, this is by far the best invention I've seen in awhile, and a lot less work for me.

I have two long haired border collies and I feed them Nutro Lamb & Rice, it's done wonders for their coats. I'm not that great at remember to give them a little olive oil, sometimes I give them some cod liver oil type pills but even without it they're doing pretty good on the Nutro

Get a poodle!....They come in all sizes and don't shed.

LOL I am such a well trained dog parent. Peati will wait to see what she is getting from out plate before she eats her dinner! She goes to work everyday! I have customers who stop by just to see her! I had a friend whose family were big hunters and also they raised/butchered cattle. The first time I walked into her living room I nearly had a heart attack. Stuffed animals EVERYWHERE. At least 10 animal heads on the wall alone, not even including the bear rug and the cow skin throw over the couch. Everywhere I went, all those animals looked at me. Freaked me out! I had to stop going there. My grandparents have two stuffed, mounted squirrels in their basement, including an albino squirrel (so pure white) with red eyes! When I was a kid we had to sleep on the pull out bed in the basement and those squirrels always scared me. So, LOL, no I would never have any "stuffed" animal in my house.

Schnauzers don't shed either ... I've got one that sleeps above my head on a pillow every night and doesn't get any hair on a white pillow slip! Don't get any better than that ... she's a black mini Schnauzer. Smart and sweet as a lamb.

Get a poodle? Yeah, because it's practical for most people to simply get rid of their existing animals that do shed - adding more unwanted pets to the overpopulated animal shelters - just so we can all run out to get a yappy little poodle that doesn't shed.

Notice that my post said "To all Pet Owners" and not "to all POTENTIAL pet owners"?

Eeeeek! Disregard that last post. My son is a prankster and he was jokingly telling me that he was posting those remarks, and I think he thought he was hitting preview message as opposed to submit message. I didn't realize it until I logged on this morning. It really was a joke here at home - both me and my son apologize as those words really weren't intended to be posted here. We are not offended by anyone, and don't mean to offend anyone else.

We had a pet food store/groomer in our old neighborhood that did the Furminator treatment. It makes a HUGE difference, especially during that twice a year coat blow. It involved a shampoo to loosen the follicles, a turbo dry, and major brushing or comb through. Well worth someone else doing it with the amount of fur it removes from the dog!
We also feed RAW. Best decision in our dogs' cases and really reduced the amount of shedding overall and skin conditions we were dealing with.

A lot of pet owners are aware of the non-shedding or lesser shedding breeds or that there are some to look into. None of them attract me, personally. Reading that "get a _____" was a little irritating. Doesn't help those who love the breeds that DO shed and would like to reduce it in their homes.
