new Dyson stick vac DC18

Has anyone tried this new product? We are in the process of having all our carpet changed to laminate, and I need a new vacuum cleaner that will perform well on laminate and ceramic floors. I need to know if it comes with a crevice tool and an upholstery brush. Right now I have a Eureka bagless upright that I paid less than $100 for 5 years ago. It works fine, but I find it cumbersome on the hard floors. I thought the smaller Dyson might work well. Regular cheap stick vacs just don't cut it.

The Dyson site lists all the accessories that come with each model. Very helpful IMO since it seems many online retailers describe models differently, making it hard to compare apples to apples.

So far so good. In fact, so good that I don't have to "beg" DH to vacuum anymore - he just does it.

But I would not call it a "stick" - it is slim, but not that slim. It is easy to maneuver indeed. We used it on carpet and on hard surfaces as well.

Mary is right, any place selling it lists the accessories. It does have a dusting brush/crevice tool combo but the brush is quite small. It is great for blinds but probably not so much if you have a lot of upholstered furniture. DH cleaned a fabric sleeper - very dusty because we did not think to cover it BEFORE starting the remodel - and it came out very clean though it took awhile.

There was a good website where I read the reviews before purchasing the vac. I think it was among the first ones you get if you Google it. One lady there was not happy about the small brush and got another brush attachment (Kenmore? about $10) that worked perfectly with Dyson.

The only potential problem with Dysons is reliability. ConsumerSearch.com reports some complaints about it in the UK but for an earlier model. We've had the vac for less than a month - only time will tell.

Not to change the subject of the post, but... (I think the question has been answered anyway) Dobesrule... the Dysons are great vacuums. The only thing that makes that model called the "Animal" is the air driven turbine tool which is supposed to be good for pet hair. The hose and cords are very long, and the dirt chamber is very easy to empty. If someone must have bagless (most vac guys don't like bagless, I feel the same) a Dyson is the only way go to. They don't lose suction and they are a dream to empty. Powerful too... there is some debate about the agitator not being strong enough for American carpets. Also, long hair will wrap around the brush roll because it is very slender so keep that in mind. If you have bare floors, you can just turn the brush roll off, or release the hose, flip the hand grip and insert the bare floor attachment. It works wonderfully! Can't break the belt... When I worked for Sears, I would throw a sock on the ground and run it over. The brush roll will stop and you will hear the most terrible racheting sound you've ever heard in your life. The clutch is preventing the belt from breaking, and the user will certainly know to remove the obstruction. Lots of ports to remove clogs too! No headlight, and it's very "tall" at the base so if you need to do under something you will need the attachments. If you are used to an Oreck it will take a while to get used to the bulk of the Dyson. The head is tall, and it weighs I believe 19 verus your flat 8 pound Oreck. But, you will be happy with the performance. You can even change the angle on the dusting brush and upholstery tool, and the upholstery tool and crevice tool have slits in them so the air flows and they don't "stick" to the surface you are vacuuming. They thought of almost everything! I hate all the plastic on the modern stuff, but I guess we have to grow with the times. I'm 23 and I like the vacuums that were made before I was born! If you can afford a Dyson, by all means get one. Orecks are traditionally known for small motors and fans and being loud, but I only know of them by their reputation among vacuum people.

After spending a year reading all the comments about Dysons (and not really believing all of them), I was able to purchase the new 2008 Dyson Slim (Total Access). I think the only difference between the older and newer versions is the newer one comes with more attachments. My back, hip and legs prevented me from continuing with my Panasonic or Hoover. This vacuum is a joy to use. No pressure from pushing yet the suction is so great on it, that there are small area rugs that it won't even move on because the suction is so strong. It sucks up everything, moves around obstacles easily and the attachments are the best I have used since the old, old electroluxes. There is a slight learning curve so that it doesn't fall over when you are extending the hose, and there is no light on the front of it but if it means having fun while I vacuum, this little machine is worth every penny. Besides, my carpets are looking better and there is less dust in the house. I would recommend this to anyone who can no longer handle the weight of the normal vacuum, but wants the power of a bull. It has been one month now and I am enjoying it more everyday.

Okay I am truly crazy. I just ordered the V8 Absolute so I’d have the hard floor attachment. I’ll keep that one at home where I have the new wood floors and bring the V8 Animal to the lake where I don’t have as much wood and it’s 18 years old. I’m not at all a shopping nut but I’m glad this thing will arrive when DH is out of town and I can squirrel it away before he sees it. Otherwise he might think I’ve gone off the deep end - have hardly vacuumed in 20+ years and suddenly I buy two vacuums in less than a month. Being of a frugal nature I tell myself they‘ll pay for themselves after a couple months without a housecleaner. People ask me what I do now that I’m retired - oh, I buy vacuum cleaners and vacuum every day - well not every day but often.

I find it pretty easy to detach and attach the wand after emptying the canister. I love my stick so much that I find myself vacuuming when there is nothing to vacuum. I have two ugly step sisters of my Stick, the Dyson uprights. I am sure they feel abandoned because I haven't even seen them in two weeks. Last week a fireman had to climb through my second story bedroom window on a rainy night (long story with good ending) and all I could think of as I was being carted off on a stretcher was that my new Stick would easily clean the dirt being tracked in. The first thing I did when I came home from the ER was grab my BFF aka The Stick and in a couple of minutes....all was nice and clean. Me and my Stick Forever. PS Have I said how much I love my Dyson Stick 11? :-)

Thanks for the input. It does sound like it is just what I need. Now I just have to find one at a good price. Kohl's had it advertised in their circular yesterday, and I could get an additional 30% off. However, when I went to the store, they didn't have any, and not at their website either. I may have to wait a couple of months until more stores stock them.

I have the Dyson Slim and the attachments from my Hoover Wind Tunnel work perfectly with it.

LOL - my wife says the same thing, although I did not buy a stick vacuum, I bought the Dyson Full Kit a few months back. (When would I ever think I would spend almost $400.00 on a vacuum?) What was I thinking? But they are that good! My wife pointed out that on the brochure that came with the vacuum that a man is using it! I am fascinated by what they continually pick up. It's a science lesson!
