vent height question--performance, ergonomics, and aesthetics

Hi --

We need to specify the height of the hood for install tomorrow. The hood is a Zephyr Roma 600 CFM 36", and range is Bertazzoni 36".

What we're thinking of doing is putting it 31" above the range top, as shown below.

This would make horizontal uppers on either side roughly bisect the rectangular element of the hood. This is 5'7 off the floor. It sticks out 22" from the wall, and the stove sticks out nearly 24".

Originally I was planning to have the hood 2" lower, at 29", so it would line up with the seem of the bottom and lower uppers on either side. (Aventos HF hardware).

Unfortunately I discovered that the uppers are 3/16" different in elevation on each side. So if we line it up on one side it won't be lined up on the other. Unfortunately since we don't have the lowers / glass doors in yet we don't really know how it will look--if this 3/16" difference will be noticeable. But we need to get the hood in so we can get the stove in.

The most common height I've seen that people recommend is 30" above the surface.

The hood manufacturer recommends a range of 26-33" above the stove. The hood is 600 CFM.

Bert recommends a minimum 400 CFM fan with hood 25 1/2" -- 31 1/2" above the stove.

So I was thinking of setting the hood at 31" above the range, which would put it at 5'7 off the floor. I'm 5'10 and cook a lot but doubt I'll have a head bumping issue--though I am a bit concerned.

Based on performance, I would think 31" above the range would be about as high as I would want to go--maybe another 1/2" max.

Maybe when we actually lift the hood up tomorrow I'll see how it looks and if we should set it a bit lower -- we set a piece of cardboard to get an idea but it's only 2 dimensional.

Any thoughts about this?

Can you install the hood on a slant, to match the 3/16" offset? Might work, or might drive you crazy. You could mock up something with poster board to see.

Bend a long strip of cardboard, about the thickness of the face of your hood, in a squared-off U shape, to serve as a mock-up of your hood. Then tape it up on the wall 5'7" above the floor, so it sticks out 22". That makes a three dimensional mockup.

You can play around with the height (etc.) as you pretend to cook on the burners below.

I'll scout around, Aliris. This and a few other tips really helped make my kitchen the functional paradise it is (for me) today -- when I began, I was quite uninformed regarding design issues that are just accepted traditions and design issues you can change with impunity for the better. I'll quote the above Starcraft Builders article here just for reference: "The ideal maximum height of upper cabinets is about 32". The top shelf should be not more than about 26" from the bottom of the cabinet. Anything higher is "stool storage" -- you have to stand on a stool to get to it. There is no harm in having taller cabinets, even right to the ceiling, so long as you recognize that the top part of tall cabinets is usually unreachable and should be used to hold things only rarely used. Even the top shelf of a 32" cabinet is for most of us in the extended rather than the primary arc of reach. We can usually reach just the stuff in front of the shelf. (Lazy susans installed on the top shelf can remedy the problem, however -- everything at the back of the shelf can quickly be brought within reach with a little twist of the wrist.) The placement of upper cabinets can hamper efficiency. Most commonly they are placed 18" above the counter top. This has become the standard, not because it is the best height, but because it's where the typical 30" wall cabinet happens to fall when installed on an 8 foot wall under the usual 12" soffit and above a 36" high counter. This is, however, too high for efficient use by the most people under 6' tall. The best reach height for most people is just 57" -- about shoulder height. If the bottom of the cabinet is at 54" then almost everything in the cabinet is above the best reach height. Lowering the cabinet slightly makes the stuff in the cabinet more readily accessible. The best height for a wall cabinet is 14-15" above the counter top. A lot of countertop appliances, however, especially coffee-makers, assume an 18" height above the counter, and use every bit of it. If you have these tall appliances, then at least some of your cabinets will need to be placed higher than the optimum height. Lowering the upper cabinets just this 3-4 inches makes all of the bottom two shelves of the cabinet easily reachable, as well as at least the front half of the third shelf. Upper cabinet storage is now much more efficient with just this modest change."

Thanks to the OP for starting this thread. Many of our decisions were based on meeting the challenges of my back and feet and of course lack of vertical stature! Many of our decisions have turned out well: the raised DW, cork floor, FD frig and shallow sinks. Unfortunately some of them I wish I could go back and fix with the advantage of hindsight: buying the matching MW instead of making a shelf and placing a countertop one in and the faucets at the prep sink. In hindsight both of those decisions happened because of having to meet someone else's deadline and not ours. So, I really encourage those of you are doing your design phase to really think thru every detail now because it is really hard to change them afterwards. I do want to encourage people to have the raised DW. Ours is at the end of run partially behind a wall. We have a shallow drawer underneath it which is great for flat dishes. The counterspace on top is where dirty dishes wait their turn and is backup space for when we are doing lots of dishes by hand. Our frig is at the other end of the kitchen from the MW which is something that I debated on but figured I could work with. It does mean more walking while making things but since I was determined to have my raised DW and the frig not visible as you walk in the house... It is interesting to read what considerations we all have had as we design our kitchens for being used as kitchens. I had thought about making it more of eat in nook type of kitchen but decided I wanted the extra prep space instead. I also believe as others have demonstrated that you can have a functional and beautiful kitchen at the same time. It just takes some thought and planning which is why I guess builders don't want to take the time and thus money to do that. I haven't cooked barefoot but I do find the cork floor is much easier on my back than our previous tile floor was. And one of these days DH will finally take the rest of our pictures so I can post on the FKB!

What do you people cook in your ovens? Bowling balls? Heh heh. You must be pulling out 30lb turkeys daily if the weight of your pans is that huge of a concern. I only cook turkeys once a year (for which my family thanks me) and only on the big green egg, so we decided on a range with two ovens and a warming cabinet because of the space we gained as well as the look. Our ovens have drawers below them so they aren't on the floor and when I do use them I am able to safely open and check the food without being in danger of burning my nose. We had wall ovens in the old house and hated them, as well as the gas cook top, which IMO is just a horrific waste of space. Now in our new house we have that same crappy set up and will be yanking it out as soon as possible. But we will still only cook turkeys rarely. As a pure ergonomics issue though, it is always better to lift up verses lift from chest level so for me....I just don't get why people put the stove up on the wall. Much like the drawer microwave...it just feels unsafe. And ummm they are ugly. Ok IMO but really, I hate big electronics and plastic in the middle of a wall. (I feel the same way about big screen tvs).

Here's another idea. If you like to look outside while you are working, I think this would be a very nice plan for you since you could both cook and bake with lots of natural light streaming in across your work surface and enjoy the view while you are stirring at the cooktop. Ranges with windows on either side many times look balanced and beautiful. I've kept the range tucked up tight against the outside wall, so venting it should be straightforward. There are three distinct zones in this kitchen, with very little overlap between them (an ideal scenario). There is no need to work over the dishwasher. Snackers can come in, use the fridge, get something from the pantry, grab a glass of water and put it in the sink or dishwasher with very little disturbance to the cook. A key to making a corner sink and DW work nicely together is to get 12" to 15" or so between the two so that you can stand at the sink comfortably while the DW door is open. I tried to line up the clean up counter with the original peninsula that you had drawn above so that it wouldn't stick out too far into the nook by the garage door. Having the sink configured this way would also would let you interact with those who are in the big room while you are cleaning up. I've labeled some things on here, including where I might store some stuff. The second pantry could be for baking supplies, including the pans and casseroles that go with that job, small appliances, as well as the standard flour, sugar, etc. It also more than makes up for the fact that I made your first pantry smaller by just a little bit to get more counter in the clean up zone. If this pantry isn't necessary, then it might be pretty to make it look more like a hutch for dish storage if you'd like.

I say leave it like you have in the picture. That way you won't notice the 3/16" difference. By the way, what software did you use to make that rendering? It looks great!

Thanks for the comments. We did end up leaving it like in the picture, actually about 1" down due to vent hood cover sizing issues. The amount of space was such that the single cover fit almost perfectly if we dropped it 1" from my rendering. The finished height is just about 30" now.

I'll post a finished photo later.

An issue we ran into is that the ceiling is not perfectly level. Surprise, surprise. So with the cover secured with all 4 screws the cover just about touches the ceiling in the back and has a noticeable shadow in the front. By only screwing the top 2 screws it was possible to set the cover so it is pretty even with the ceiling. If you look up over to the top of the hood you see the gap there rather than up at the ceiling.

Only thing I could think of other than doing this would be to put some sort of molding at the top where the hood meets the ceiling-- something similar to the stainless schluter edging we used on the tile.

Regarding the software, I use Interior Design 3D for Mac, which is similar to Sketchup but much easier--and lets you change textures, colors, etc. It can import sketchup models.

It's a good way to visualize the overall look, and change perspective, etc., but not a full-featured kitchen design program. It has a limited set of built-in cabinets for instance. I created the uppers by making boxes of diferent textures, assembling them, and then merging into a single object. Then I could duplicate and rescale. Same with the hood-- it's 2 boxes.

No, it makes two of us. My DH always jokes how I can see such things and be bothered by them, LOL.
