Candles - How do you store yours?

I have a large number of red and green pillar Christmas candles, a half dozen white pillars, a few brown and beige fall pillars and a couple of pink pillars. In addition, I have a box full of different colored votive candles, plus a bag full of tealights.

I was wondering how and where everyone stores their candles. Most of my pillars rest on their sides in a cabinet in the family room. The votives are in a plastic box with some slightly used (or slightly bruised) tapers and I have to rifle through the box to find the right color. The bag of tealights is in a drawer in another room. I'd love to move them all to the garage, but I'm afraid the heat will get to them in the summer.

I'm really never sure what I have.

I keep mine in a clear front 3 drawer plastic cabinet in the basement.
The top one holds tealights sorted by color and stored in ziplock bags , also tapers. The middle one holds pillars and the bottom one holds the ones that came in little glass jars.
Your melting in the garage fear is warranted. I didn't pay attention a few years ago and made that mistake with some that were in the Christmas decor and lets just say by the time the season came back around , they didn't look much like candles anymore. lol

Candle storage is a problem for me as I have quite a few that I don't burn (decorative only) or the wax hurricane type that lasts forever. I also can never resist when I find good quality tapers on sale and will buy multiples then. Officially I store most in boxes in the cold room altho whenever I want a particular one it's a problem finding exactly what I want so I definitely need a better system. I'm convinced DH has 'hidden' a box from me as there are missing votives. He claims not but it's likely in the back of a closet or on the top shelf of the cold room where I can't reach. I have started putting some tapers in the drawer of the sideboard in our greatroom so they are easily accessible. I don't think they will ever get too warm there altho I may have to move them before summer as the house could get too warm then if we are away.

I keep tealights in an enamel pot and some in another lidded pot which are handy to the kitchen and greatroom. They are what I burn mostly. I like using various containers such as bean pots or ceramic or pottery containers to store things. Hidden but handy.

in the beginning, when I hadn't caught on to the idea of glass containers or other things, I was cutting off the tops of milk cartons for the shards. I probably have some still with glass in them,..somewhere. lately I have been saving the cool shaped orange juice jugs..but that's for storing home made laundry soaps. they would also make a nice, sturdy..with a handle container, for more broken dishes. now I have to start thinking in terms of many more containers. I scored a source of stained glass that had been ordered from some of the most wonderful companies, for a couple who had done a number of years of work all over the states. they had begun to liquidate their inventory, these past few months and I wasn't searching for any stained glass at that time. I was too late for the tools, saws, grinders and all that but still, after 85% of their glass was sold, I met them and instead of selling the rest..they are setting me up on a payment plan, for the rest of the glass and frames. I'm only barely getting set up on the first glass piece. they understand that I'm not knowing how to do the actual stained glass and they're quite content to know that I'm starting out with GOG and mosaics. I've made a very limited few pieces of mosaics..a few vases and that genie bottle.. they only want to see some happiness happen with their glass and it also saved them much time, expense and all the packing of shipping, when I can drive up to their existing studio, on a beautiful drive and visit, while there.. a certain win-win outcome. she gave me a hug and called me her new "fledgling" and wished me well. They were happy to have had enough supplies to help me on my way~ I don't think I even own a glass cutter, in fact~ it's only been a hammer and nippers for me, for the past 5 years..rather lame but I've been content to smash and dash... I have a window outside to choose.. per "Slow's" request..she said to .. ~~~frame the one and start on a new one..~~~ the 'new' one is drawn and now I need to choose which old frame window I'll work it on.

I use the same system as others--have a large plastic ornament box with cardboard dividers and most of my standard/inexpensive ornaments go in there. As juddgirl says you can easily customize by removing divider strips if you want larger cubbies. My special and fragile ornaments go into a separate plastic bin and most of them are in their own boxes if the ornaments are glass or really delicate. If not boxed, I wrap in tissue paper. And pesky, I knew there is a reason I like ya! When you wrote this: "I have 15 large bins, all numbered and with items sorted into them by category. They get stored in the attic and DH HATES me when I ask him to get them down from the attic. I know just how many bins I have (they're numbered) and he knows he must get them all in the order I ask for them, because some aren't needed till later in the season and some are needed before we get the tree up." ...I figured it is safe to confess my own neatnik/freakishly organized secrets about holiday storage and procedures. I also keep all my holiday supplies in our loft; all are in containers with red/green color themes so it's obvious they are holiday related. I also have each box numbered; I put the same number (printed on labels) on each end of the box and on top so it's easy to see no matter how the box is stored. And then, I go one step further and keep a master list of what is in each box. I print that out using MS Word tables, so I end up with a single sheet of paper on which is listed, by box number, exactly what is in each storage box. I make 2 copies and place one in a plastic protective sleeve in the loft next to the boxes. The other stays on my desk. When it's time to start decorating it is incredibly easy! I just get my master list and ask my husband to bring down boxes by number. So, for example, when it's time to trim the tree I may only need boxes 1, 2 (ornaments), 3 and 4 (lights). Once I start wrapping gifts I'll get 5 and 6 (bows and boxes). To decorate the house 7 and 8 (knick-knacks, linens) come down. I keep my wreath in a special wreath box and gift wrap is stored in a gift wrap upright container. Gift labels, ribbon, tape, scissors and extra fine point sharpies for writing names are in one of those stackable storage box set ups. All are kept in the loft, together, and with the master list handy in its plastic sleeve right there with them. Aside from the ornaments, I also have my holiday cards organized: all cards are stored in a particular cabinet in my LR, to keep them inside an air conditioned environment so as not to ruin envelopes or get moldy which would happen in the loft. On my computer I have a file of mailing labels which I created years ago using an Avery formatting online tool. So the labels are pre-formatted and only need to be printed onto holiday labels, which I buy and keep in my office in my desk organizer. When I'm ready to do holiday cards I only need to buy holiday stamps, print out my labels, get my return address labels, and sit down for a card session. Makes sending cards a breeze. And since I'm confessing, I also keep a master Excel spreadsheet of gifts. I have columns set up with the recipient's name, the gift(s) I either am planning to give or have given, the price of the gift and who it is 'from' so in the case of someone who gets several gifts like my niece they come from different people, even though I'm the one doing the gifting process. I do this each year. I can easily track how much I'm spending and it lets me see quickly what I have gotten and still need to buy. I have my lists from past years in a folder on my computer at home so I can also review quickly to be sure I'm not giving the same gift I gave the year before for example. One 'at home' example. My farm produces about 3-400 pounds of rhubarb. No deer or critter touches it so the rows I've transferred corms, or whatever they are called, over the years are out in the open field, in rows. Critters do not touch it. In the markets it looks limp and crappy. At 7-8 dollars a pound. If I put 15 to 20 pounds into my fridge in bags it lasts garden fresh for three-four weeks. if I place one stalk on a fridge shelf uncovered it will go limp in two days. Just like carrots. It really is a fridge/crisper design that keeps produce fresh. -if I continued 20 years ago, dividing and transplanting rhubarb once a year, I would have a very nice $$$ farm. We joked about a rhubarb retirement in our late 30's. Oh well. Had I continued transplanting once a year with not much effort...we would easily have a few thousand pounds in just a couple acres. (it grows without any extra food or water.) Garlic is another crop that does really well. I send 5 pounds of rhubarb to my MIL and SIL every year. Down south where rhubarb does not grow. It is a weed to us but I do make juice, etc. We all have what others want.

I guess I'm treating it like white gold ;-) It's not something I would just put a piece of tape over the open bag and just plop it on a corner for me. I've done that and things get moved around, shifted, and next thing ya know, there is more #1.5 grade perlite in the bag than the #3 that it started out with. Ha, I even go out of my way to drive to this particular Hydro. shop as I know their stuff has been handled proper....

OA, I use the clear plastic tubs that salad greens come in. I use some for votives, some for tealights and some for tapers. These all go in the drawers of an old dresser in the basement. I also put pillars in the drawers on their sides. If they might touch and get "spots" on lighter coloured ones, I put paper towel around them.

I keep putting most of mine in my drawers in my utility room. The larger ones are sitting on a shelf in the bottom cupboard. I have added alot since my first tablescape and will try to take some pictures this week end. They are easy to see what colors I have.

I keep the different colors separated by keeping some of the new ones in their see through plastic boxes they come in. I can understand what others are going through who have tablescaped for years. My tea lights are stored in their original boxes they came in.

I never take mine out of the home anymore. I use to haul them to the big shed and they would always melt in the summer.

I do a couple things...I have 2 of those decorated boxes that you stack & I have them set under the buffet..I put votives & small candles in sandwich bags in the boxes. (sometimes they do get scratched up abit). Tapers I keep in narrow buffet drawer (with my crochet hooks/knitting needles)...pillars, jar candles & glass candle holders/plates, etc. I use 2 shelves in the linen closet which is on hallway side of DR...that works good for me.

I've found if I tuck them away in closets, that I never remember what I've put where...this way I have easy access all in the same room (well, not ALWAYS easy...sometimes must take several out of linen closet to get to the back! LOL!) Jeanne S.

Mine are also in boxes in the basement, except the tapers are in a drawer in my diningroom hutch which is now FULL, so that creates a problem!

Not really organized, have to dig thru & nick them up moving them around.

Basement boxed ones are not very organized either, that is something I've been wanting to remedy for a while!

I learned the hard way years ago that the colors will bleed. :( For storage, I now wrap my tapers individually in tissue paper or newspaper, and store them on their side in the linen pantry.

I also have 'emergency' taper candles hung in my handwoven candle basket, of course. :) And hand-dipped candles that are still attached in pairs by the wick are hung on a small peg shelf.

Currently, mine are mostly in the top drawer of an antique dresser in our guest room. The drawer has some wooden dividers, so the pillar candles and some chunky ones fit in the back area and the votives fit in the three front sections. The pillars have certainly multiplied now that I found this place and am decorating for more holidays! I've been thinking that I may need to find another place for the "chunky" candles. From experience--and not the good kind--the garage or outside storage shed are NOT good places for candle storage here in sunny California. Had some Christmas candles that were left with the centerpiece when stored and to say they were "deformed" by the next Christmas is putting it mildly! LOL

I have a huge wooden cabinet in my sewing room...in it's former life it was a card catalog in a library. It has lots of shallow drawers. The top half is full of music, the bottom half is full of candles sorted by color. One of my summer(when it's too hot to be outside) projects is to sort everything, dump the candles I don't use and file some of the music in a regular filing cabinet at the church. That will calm the overcrowding issues :^)
