Just my opinion, but while a canister steam cleaner will clean gunk out of grout, I think you need chemicals and some scrubbing to get the grout clean. If it were my house, I would use a really good grout cleaner and then seal the grout. After that, I would use a higher end canister steam cleaner to do routine cleaning of the tile and grout. When you start with clean (sealed) grout, I believe that a steamer will keep the grout cleaner than normal mopping with detergents and water. With such a large area to clean, I would go with a steamer that had a pretty good size water tank; some of the small steamers only hold a cup of water. I followed the recommendations of the tile guys on the John Bridge Tile Forums for products and use the StoneTech products for cleaning and sealing.

I have a pro model,came with all kinds of attachments. I clean everything with it. works wonders. It was about $600 if I remember correctly. The sharps are junk. So is the Haan, if you want to do anything other than floors. I cleaned my stove top and and it is a gas and you would not believe what it got out of my gas jets and the flame holder. looks good as new.

The two most misunderstood floors are hardwood and tile. Floors don't need to be sanitized. They are "germy" moments after cleaning. Never wet hardwood. Sweep or vacuum and damp mop with an "almost wrung out dry" mop made for wood floors or a microfiber mop. Steam cleaning will eventually raise the finish. I don't care what the commercials say. Don't use chemicals or cleaners on tile. Damp mopping with plain water is all it needs.Push the mop diagonally across the tile not with the grout lines. Chemicals and even the overuse of steam will destroy the grout and even the finish. It gets especially ugly if your grout has been sealed. I have fifteen year old (at least) tile in my main entry hallway that still looks brand new. Never sealed the grout. Vacuum as needed. Damp mop twice a month with warm water. I have been in homes with two year old tile that looks terrible due to the over-cleaning methods used.

I broke down and bought a cheap Bissel about 5 years ago. It doesn't have the upholstery attachments, which I greatly regret. I use the Bissel cleaner, which I purchase at Target, and they also have a Bissel Power Booster, very hard to find (I bought it online). The Power Booster is a powder which you add a small scoopful of to the hot water and cleaner into the machine. Makes a huge difference. I love my Bissel, and it's one of the best investments I've made. Like I said, if you can purchase the upgraded model, do so. I only spent just under $100 on mine, and I think it does a pretty good job. In fact, I loaned it to a friend with 4 dogs and a cat. She used it once and was shocked at how clean her carpets came out. She went out the next week and bought her own. This past weekend, I spilled most of a bowl of salsa on my wool carpet. I scooped up the solid stuff, and steamed it right away. The spot is completely gone, and though I had cleaned the rug about 5 months ago, you can't believe how dirty the water was when I dumped it. One more tip, I only steam my carpets late at night before I go to bed. That way, nobody walks on them and they are dry in the morning. Works especially great in the winter, when you have the heat on. Sure beats what the guys with the truck charge!
