Where can one get moving/storage boxes cheap?

Hello all,

We are starting our custom build this week and we need to move out of our current home and put it up for sale while the new home is being built. So we are downsizing from 5000sf to about 2700sf rental home till we can move in to our new build.

Does anyone have any tips and tricks on finding moving boxes? We have been looking around for ages now and everyone wants like $3-$5 a box! I have even checked ebay and they are pricy.

Wal-Mart had some decent priced our last move. Sams Club has some too. Think it was around 25 for 10+. Plus they have the banker boxes. Also look into Costco and BJ Wholesale.

I've been seeing used ones advertised on Craig's List. Super cheap. Just another area to check.

Both covers were opaque, one blue and the other white, so I couldn't use them. They would have been snug enough and much easier. Actually I needed to open mine every few days (which is a pain with those bungee cords) to let some fresh air in. They don't have to be totally sealed, just have to keep the humidity as high as possible. I don't know if a translucent one would let enough light through or not. That one poster who put me on to the idea appeared to use the translucent cover that came with his box, and he might have had his lights a lot closer. He also misted his. I did mist a little in the beginning but figured it was just more likely to blow nasty spores around and might do more harm than good. George Mander uses clear plastic, said it should be heavy. I think mine was too heavy which made it a little harder to work with but otherwise ok. Talk about a dim bulb lol. One of my lights was very dim, and I thought maybe that's the way they were supposed to be with the warm and cool. Then I got the second set of tubes when I set up the other pair of shop lights, and they both lit up real bright, so I figured something was wrong with that other one. I fiddled with it, and didn't have it screwed in tightly enough. Then it brightened up like it should have been. That could account for some of my losses. Some of my cuttings I left too many leaves on. I forgot one of those did root but I did lose that one in transplanting, a very odd alba with the most unusual leaves I'd ever seen on a rose. I posted photos of it last year. No matter how well you have thought it out or how carefully you read what somebody else did, I find I always end up having to wing it a little. The ones I wanted the most were the ones I lost all of them. The lady let me have just 6 cuttings before she trimmed her bushes down. I could kick myself for not asking her to call me and let me come get all the trimmings. Now one has died over the winter, and she isn't going to want to let me have any more until her bushes spring back, if they do. I don't have room for all the roses I attempt anyway so it doesn't matter if I lose a lot. I don't have room for many more, plus I'm still buying some. I do feel good that I think I saved one old rose. Mine is growing happily in the back yard (I rooted that outside with bottles 2 seasons ago), and it is going to form a colony if it stays healthy. Just slight tip dieback. My Austins took a real beating this winter. I don't like to swipe stuff, but I did this one, and drove by the other day and the bush appears to be history.

Does anybody know where I can get ice box latch repaired?

I've got no clue! I don't think is is original hardware to this ice box, though it could be old. You can see where the hinges have been replaced with the more ornate ones, and the receiving end of the latch used to have a different screw pattern. The ice box is my parents', they gave it to me and I broke it, now want to give it back and get their Hoosier since I think it will give me more storage. Right now only have a small air hockey table and a couple of doll houses in the ice box. I'm getting the coat closet cleaned out (hope to have French doors out of the closet and hung on LR soon), I can put toys in there but I need more drawers for puzzles and such.

I know they sell boxes especially for dishes, including some kind of padding for between the plates. If you don't want to go that route, bubble wrap and lots of it. Having moved a few times I can say packing trucks and storing stuff is infinitely easier if most of the boxes are the same size. I would suggest ordering new boxes in, maybe, 3 different sizes. I order a bunch of 275 lb. test boxes from Uline two moves ago. They've quite reusable and hold up well. Uline also sells a variety of specialized moving boxes, if you need or want something different than a regular box. For longer term storage, I like to run package tape along all the seams. Takes a little longer but seems to keep dust and any bugs out. I found Uline's service to be excellent and prices far better than from a moving company or local office supply store. bloobird, About the AOL ISP numbers, the AOL numbers in the code that I see do not indicate the location of the user. Unless I and several other users all happen to live in the AOL offices in Manassas, Virginia. I can state with complete and utter confidence that I do not live in Manassas, that I do not live in Virginia, and that I do not share the same identities with the others here on GW who are signing in using that ISP number. There is no way to tell from that number anything about the user other than that they are using AOL. Sometimes an AOL number will indicate that the user is in the state of Washington. Something connected to AOL is in the state of Washington but it doesn't mean that the user is there. (Note, if you didn't read my earlier post about my going online and posting with AOL, then this might not make sense to you, bloobird. So you'd have to go back and read that post and look at the code.) To determine where an AOL user lives, you'd have to know their AOL user name which the ISP number does not give you. It doesn't even tell you that it is an AOL individual. It tells you that the person uses AOL. That is ALL it tells you. Even if you knew the user's name, if they hadn't filled out an AOL profile, that doesn't tell you where they live or anything about them. They can be quite anonymous. I do NOT know that my stalker uses AOL. In fact I thought that they did not use AOL. I do know that they know enough about ISPs that they know that using AOL obscures their identity. And AOL is free if you access it by using another server as I do. So it is easy to sign up for AOL and use it if someone wants to for any reason. It is not good for being on the internet at it tends to kick you off. So someone could write a post and get kicked off before they submit it and then they'd have to write it again. That would be annoying. So I doubt that many use it for this purpose unless it is their only access to the internet or they want to obscure their identity. As for my stalker, I don't think they are intending to harrass me if they are here or they would have done it by now. It may be that if the person is here that they are content just to have located me and to read the threads. That might be sufficient for them. It is someone whom I know and from whom I am estranged. I would not report them to anybody unless they did something pretty horrendous. So I may go back to my other name. I haven't decided yet. I kind of like this name too. Decisions, decisions!

I always get the free ones from the ABC store. You aren't usually able to get huge boxes and of course you have to deal with the variety of art on the boxes, but hey, they're free :D

Banker's boxes are often free at Staples (rewards card). You purchase them and get back 100% in rewards....you can use the rewards to purchase more...
They just had them about 3-4 weeks ago...keep checking their ads

Put an ad on your local CL that you want boxes.
Go to a liquor store and ask if you can take some of their boxes.
Go to grocery store and ask for apple boxes.
Know any friends who are active Mary Kay consultants? We get our stuff shipped to us in a great moving size box. If you don't have an active MK friend, find one on marykay.com... we're all over the place.

Also, post on FB that you need moving boxes. You'd be surprised how many times I had a friend who just moved and one who was needing boxes, and I was able to connect the 2 so one could get rid of their boxes... The boxes are usually good for a few moves.

I agree with the above advice, but for what you are going to buy, consider plastic storage tubs (the kind made by rubbermaid and sterilite). They're often the same price as boxes, but last longer and protect your stuff better (especially in storage).

I go to the grocery stores and get theirs for free. I have about half of our house packed up so far, and I haven't bought a box yet.

I second the plastic storage tubs. We sold our home and are renting while we build and bought a bunch of the plastic tubs from Lowes....they stack very well and you can get a bunch of items in them.

...they're also bug proof and useful after you've moved. Reusing supermarket boxes is a good way to move in cockroaches and other little lovelies.

We went to our local grocery store and asked for egg crates...they are just a perfect size...not too big and not too small...and they have handles cut into the sides for easy carrying...and they are free! I went in and they asked me how many...I came away with 20 and have had a 1,000 uses for them.

Do you live near a military base or post? Military members are always moving, so there are always boxes available for free or very little cost near military bases. And for military moves they use the different size boxes, including the wardrobe ones so you can just hang up your clothes in the box. I would look/advertise on Craigslist.
