Which 48' Range - Biggest Bang for My Buck

I have received what I consider to be really good pricing on a few different ranges. All the ranges are 6 burner with griddle. Was hoping you could give me an opinion as to which range you think would give me the biggest bang for my buck taking both price and caliber of range into consideration. I understand the least expensive may not necessarily be the best. Thanks so much!! This is a big decision!!

Capital Precision - $5700- self clean

Blue Star - $6800

DCS - $6000

American Range - $6800

It is a simple decision if you want the maximum BTU burners as Bluestar stands alone. We have Viking with 15,000 BTUs and I can tell you that is not enough, although it is a huge step up from low-end ranges. To me, even the 22.5K is not enough :), let alone the 18K and lower of the other options.

On the other hand, BS does look rough. The grates are in your face so if you want everything to look neat and shiny, then Capital would have been my second choice.

Being an owner of a Capital I consider it a very good range.

Price wise what you are reporting is too good to pass up at least in my opinion. Likewise the prices on the other ranges seem to be very good. I would like to know where you are shopping.

Berries are very popular for U-picks. They are generally quicker to get into production don't have some of the costs fruit trees require (i.e. no thinning and harvesting costs, little, if any, spraying). "Blueberries seem like a great U pick fruit to me, because once planted, they require little time compared to the blacks, which require time consuming pruning and training." Erect blackberries don't require any training and a minimal amount of summer pruning. It takes a little longer to prune out the dead canes, but it goes pretty fast. I'm currently in the process of developing a U-pick. My own "current" philosophy is to develop a diversity for a couple of reasons. First, people like choices. This is a primary rule in retailing and a big part Walmart and Amazon have put their competitors out of business. Second, as a farmer, crop failure happens. Having "all your eggs in one basket" not only subjects you to the risk of some years of no income, it also turns your customers away. Most people think they are adventurous, but in truth people like familiarity. We go to the same places to buy our groceries, get our hair cut, etc. Having nothing to offer in a year of crop failure will lead to lost customers the following year. They'll find other places to get their fruit. I've had good luck growing and selling peaches, so I plan to offer that as my central staple. I'd also like to offer as many other fruits as I can with the condition they ripen during the peach season. I want to offer customers as many choices as possible if they are going to take the time to drive out to the orchard. So far I plan to plant peaches, summer apples, blackberries, raspberries, tomatoes, and "late" pie cherries. I would like to offer some plums, but don't have enough experience to risk failure of a large planting. Similarly, I've not been successful enough with blueberries to start a U-pick planting. All that said, there are U-pick orchards that focus on one or two crops and are successful. I know a guy who has one acre of blackberries around here and sells about 10K per year from that one acre. The largest blueberry farm in MO is about 7 miles away and they sell mostly blueberries (U-pick). They sell all they can grow. It sounds like you are fairly new to fruit growing so my advice to you would be to start with your successes (blueberries and blackberries) and then you can slowly branch out to other fruits. Be aware start-up costs will be more than you expect.

it actually appears you have a pretty decent handle on your needs for your climate zone. Most cases people post here "doing 2x6 frame walls with fiberglass for high energy efficiency". That is highly laughable. The best "bang for buck" insulation is cellulose, by far. Not only is it much greener, but its more dense (sound deadening, helps to reduce more thermal transfer vs fiberglass, borate treated, and more fire resistant). Do not focus on r alone. Blown blanket will have a slightly higher r (typically around 4.1) vs dense packs or wet spray cellulose (around 3.9ish). However due to the density of cellulose, it will out perform blown blanket any day of the week in the other areas. fiberglass also reduces r when temps drop. Cellulose is also typically slightly cheaper then blown fiberglass. I would have them look into wet spraying or dense packing cellulose in your wall instead of blown blanket. Also definitely get a price to blow cellulose into the ceiling instead of fiberglass. You should not only reduce price slightly, but also have a better performing product. Also notes, if you can put a 1" layer of XPS on the exterior of your house, that will greatly increase your thermal performance of your walls. example: using a r-4 roughly, you are sitting at r-22 center of cavity. Reduce that by a framing factor of 20% as well as *some* infiltration, you are closer to an r-14 range. Adding the XPS has you sitting at an r-27, with infiltration even more reduced, and your framing factor is reduced to closer to 8-10%, giving you closer to a CLEAR WALL of around r-20-23. Around here XPS goes for about $.78/sqft plus install, so just under a buck a square foot. Air sealing however if your #1 priority. This makes a huge difference. It sounds like you are ahead of the game there though. Caulk anything and everything. Sills, headers, sheathing to face of studs, etc. Caulk is the cheapest way to make the most difference on your new build. If you really want to take it to the next level, after your shell is up, windows in and attic sealed (BEFORE insulation), have someone come do a blower door test. This will help find leaks and other areas you can easily fill prior to insulating. Also consider air tight drywalling and a secondary air infiltration barrier. So off of that rant, back to your ceilings. What exactly is "flat part of the ceiling?" I would NOT recommend CCf in your roof. I always recommend or spec open cell. R is not quite as high, but the perms are much lower then CCf. This, IMO, is important especially for roofs. If your roof develops a leak, how will you know? Close cell will allow the water to sit there on the foam, pooled on the underside of your sheathing rotting it out from the bottom up. What is worse it can start eating away at your joists as well. Open will also be about 1/3 of the price of closed. So I would fill your garage ceiling completely with open cell, and then if funds allow, fill your bonus room with open cell as well. Worse case use open cell to create your 1" air seal, then do wet spray cellulose from there. However keep in mind with expanding foams...the first inch is the most expensive. The next few inches cost pennys compared to that first inch. However DO have them fill your rim joist area completely with open cell. This should only cost around 500, but will be worth it. this is one of the most leaky areas of the house that gets the most neglected. Finally, I disagree with the recommendation to skip the batts in the garage. However I will recommend r-19 instead of r-21. Again, do not always focus on r values. those are derived from steady state numbers, but real world performance tests shows they perform nearly identical. R21 has a large increase in cost vs r19. I think it should stay because, even though the garage is not directly heated (I assume)you will still have heat transfer, loss, and generation within the garage. With a heated space above and to the side of the garage, insulated walls will help buffer your heat losses in the conditioned spaces. The cost for r-19 batts in probably all of a few hundred bucks depending on the size of your garage.

even mastic sealing ducts they are still located in the hot attic. R-38 insulation on attic floor isn't doing anything to keep air cool in R-8 ducts surrounded by attic temps. R-8 isn't anything when it is surrounded by 130 degree attic air. (this is why second floor's that share attic walls are difficult to heat and cool) rather than crawling around moving insulation in the attic to seal leakage between living & attic then caulking from inside the house to create an air barrier at the attic floor, foaming the roofline saves time. labor and materials vs one step install. also having blower door tested before work and after work is complete..it takes a LOT of effort to create the air barrier at the ceiling. I find the payback is 8-10 years, but the comfort is amazing when the foam is installed well. of course I test the foam once it is installed as well. and I mark areas that leak for foam company to come back and fix. its taken me a long time to recommend foam. I never recommend foam in walls, but in attics and under floors of homes on piers..is a good upgrade/investment. over the years I've run the numbers on all kinds of scenerios... traditonal vented attics. radiant barrier with foam on attic floor has a good performance...but you still have ducts in unconditioned space. getting the ducts into conditioned space is the best 'bang for the $'. in hot humid climates this is the install that works for us...unless moving ducts inside the conditioned space is an option. in design stages people don't do that, to expect some one to retrofit ..not happening often. foam prices are all over the road in different parts of the country. closed cell is more expensive than open cell. open cell is what we use for attics and is around $1.40 sq ft.

I agree with the others - luxury to me, isn't likely to be luxury to someone else as finishes etc. are very taste dependent. When we were looking, a lot of the things that were supposed to make the houses "worth the price" (granite, etc) weren't done to my taste anyway. Paying a premium for something I wouldn't have chosen was a hard pill to swallow. I would do what makes your home feel luxurious to you. If you're truly worried about resale, I would choose very neutral, understated hard finishes. As I said, most granite and back splashes, tile work etc., that I saw in houses was too busy/not in color palette's I liked anyway. I think luxury is walking into a house that feels like a quality blank canvas. I liked the idea of many pot lights that someone gave above. Well placed outlets too - if I was going to build, I might go so far as to ask friends about locations they wished they had outlets. Honestly what made us buy our current house was location, room sizes (all nice sized, so we have a lot of flexibility as to how we use them), closets and as simple as it sounds, everything was freshly painted in a neutral color. I think the neutral paint made it seem like more of a blank canvas. What gave me greatest pause about this house and still does, is what the builders probably thought of as the luxury items! The living room has floor to ceiling wood library paneling and stained glass transoms. It was probably quite the fashion statement in the 80's when it was built :) It could still be a beautiful look if it was painted and the dated stained glass removed, but my husband is stuck in the 80's and won't let me change any of it. My point is luxury changes over time, too.

malhgold, That is a good price on the DCS. I am seriously thinking about purchasing that one. (The 48" with 6 burners and griddle.) But the price on one of the big internet sites is over $8,000. Not sure if I am allowed to post sites here. PLus, I was quoted around $9,000 from a good local dealer here. So I am going to make some calls tomorrow for more prices on it.

Is that price you listed from a local vendor or the internet? Just curious.

Bang for the buck would have to be the Capital Precision Self-Clean. The American price seems high in comparison. The best stove top on these is the Bluestar. They're all good ranges. But the Capital with Self-Clean is normally a premium price.

That's a terrific price for the Capital. A lot less than what I paid. Are you sure it's the Precision - with self-clean & rotisserie?

The price that you have for the Capital Range is not for the self cleaning model, it is for the precision series range model GCR486G. The ranges you are choosing from the Bluestar has far and away the best burner performance, the large oven will take a full tray and the smaller oven a 1/2 tray. The American is unique in the fact that both ovens have bake broil and convection and once again the large oven will take a ful tray and small a 1/2 tray, the large oven also has twi convection fans. The burners on the American are sealed and perform like all other sealed burners whether they are Wolf, Viking or Capital. Cooking is a personal venture if I were ranking it would be Bluestar, American/DCS and then Capital which has the smalest ovens.

Well, I think they're all good ranges, but I don't think it's fair to rank them in order of oven size. I have the Capital and I have never had a time where I wished my ovens were bigger. The Capital is the most powerful (with the exception of Bluestar)and has the 19,000 BTU's on all of it's burners whereas the American you can only get up to 17K on (at the most) 3 burners. DCS is 17500. They are all really good ranges and I'd be thrilled to have any one of them in my home. It's just that at some point, you just have to go with the one you like best.

Unfortunately, you all were correct in questioning the self-clean Precision price. Spoke to the salesman today and he made a mistake with the description he gave with the model #. The price he gave was for the manual clean Precision. Just wanted to let you all know. Didn't want anyone thinking they overpaid.

Thanks for all the opinions here. Still confused as ever.

Thanks for clarifying mahlgold. To be honest, I've only used the self-clean once. It worked beautifully, but I'm thinking I'd rather have saved some of the money and gone manual. Like Coleen, I have never needed a bigger oven.

One point to discredit...sorry, but the Blue Star is anything but rough. I prefer its burner and grate system to most others because they are solid and hefty and clean extremely well.

I don't have first hand experience with the others listed and I am sure they are great units as well but the Blue Star power is unparalled. Capital's 19K BTU capacity is impressive but they will only give you 6 max. That is probably OK for the 48 but I have a 60 inch unit and specifically wanted a minimum of 8 burners and specifically did not want sealed burners. Blue Star will pretty much configure the top how you want it and I love the open burner design.

To close, we have been thrilled with our BS and everyone who has seen it remarks "That is one of the most beautiful ranges I have ever seen!" Granted, those people have never seen even a picture of a LaCanche or LeCornue but the BS is great looking and a cooking machine.
