I see nothing about the two houses that reminds me of Nantucket except shingles.

The first one is half Queen Anne Victorian and half Colonial revival and the second is Colonial Revival.

I've never heard of a builder who could not build a different style of house or build from architectural plans. If that were the case you should be cautious about using him for any design.

Nantucket has many architectural styles but it is famous for it's one story cottages.

Here is a 2 story Nantucket house.

Lol. I knew the term I used would be wrong. Whatever it is called, that's the style I like. Good to know that any good builder should be able to do that from a plan. Thanks for the info!

One aspect of the question I didn't make clear. The architect I really like (fergon architects) is in Chicago where we currently live. We will be building in cincinnati 6 hrs away. Bad idea? Don't think the builder will be sitting in on any of the architects meetings, etc. ...

I don't think the architect intends the names of these houses to be historically accurate so you should not rely on them to describe the styles to others.

If you care, the "Nantucket" house is a late Victorian combination of the Queen Anne and the Shingle Styles. The "Farmhouse" is a Colonial Revival style. The "English Tudor" is an American Tudor style.

They're all nicely designed.

I always get a little uneasy when I see houses on someone's web site with names, particularly when the names don't have much basis in architectural history.

To me, it signals more of a marketing mentality than a knowledge of and focus on architecture and architectural history. It tends to suggest that the designs were developed for repetitious resale, rather than having anything to do with a given family or site.

Only a few architect's web sites do this, IMO. Most architects tend to name their projects for their owners or for something unusual and unique about the project or site. In many cases, architects do not have the goal to resale their work, time and again in some sort of universal manner.

Just a thought.

The French style houses are more accurately called "French Inspired" since these houses do not exist in France only their parts do from different centuries and building types.
