Smelly New Vellux Blanket - How do I get rid of smell?

I bought a new Vellux Blanket and it has a smell that bothers my allergies/asthma. How I get rid of the smell? I have tried using a product called Smelly Washer which you use on Smelly Washers and on smelly towels. I soaked it for two hours in that before washing. That did not remove the smell. I can't hang it outside because our HOA does not allow such things. Suggestions?

If you have washed it normally and the smell is still there, I would return it. If it smells, there is something wrong with it.

Thanks for your response. But these Vellux blankets have this smell. It doesn't bother other people, but because I have a hyper-sensitive nose and lungs I can't be around the smell. I have purchased Vellux blankets in the past. Probably have 4 older ones. They all smelled, but I didn't have the hyper-sensitivity back then. So it wasn't an issue. Now 4 or 5 years later and lots of washings the smell has disappeared. But now that I'm hyper-sensitive I need to figure how to hasten the process. I can't wait months or years for the new to wear off. I use all the rooms in my house so I don't have a place to keep it until then.

I wouldn't go advertising the fact that you may have some uncapped oil lines buried on your property. Not in this day and age! The EPA might get hold of this info and if the want to be s---heads about it the could make you tear up half your property juat to make sure there isn't any contamination. Big $$$$$! I've seen it happen.

if you ever have a fridge that has a bad odor in it use it in there, I use it straight on a paper towel and wipe down the surfaces and put a cup with some and some water in there for a few days. My family in Louisiana had some problems due to power outages during the Hurricanes and I brought Odoban down there to them for the clean ups, especially since it kills mold and mold spores and mildew. Even in shoes that stink put some on a paper towel and shove it into the shoe and leave it there. My husband had some tennis shoes that had the fabric web stuff on the sides and he left them outside well someones cat sprayed them, OMG he did not know and put them on and we got in the car to go somewhere we had to stop the car and bail out. Finally figured out it was his shoes! I soaked them in odoban and ran them in the washer with odoban then stuffed them with soaked paper towels. I really thought I was going to have to throw those shoes away but nope it fixed them. I swear I find new things to do with it all the time. Too bad you can not find it locally, I have always got mine at Sams, the last jug I got had the spray bottle full that came along with it for the same regular price which was nice because I had used one of my old cleaner bottles to mix my odoban spray in and used a sharpie to label it LOL

I'm sorry, I have not had a chance to get any charcoal. The smell is still there. Not as strong as it was a few weeks ago and after a month it is tolerable, but everyone who comes into my new room asks "what is that smell?" This is INSANE how much worse the smell is after this supposed VOC compliant crap. There is no way in hell this is better for you. for the first 3 weeks I could not even stand being in the room as I would get a headache after breathing this in for 20 minutes. I loved the old smell of the old stuff and it would be gone within a week. This smell is going on over a month and It is still lingering. I think we need to find another brand or get everyone to complain to these varnish companies to bring back the old formulas. Why did they even change it? How in the heck did they ever test this and Say "Yeah this is better!! You would have to have absolutely no sense of smell to think this stuff is good for anyone to breath or use. Do they really think by changing the smell or recipe of varnish we are saving the planet? It is ridiculous!! I'm so sorry I wish I had the answer for you. I just left my windows open a crack for days until it was tolerable. Also you could use a damp rid bag and hope that will absorb some of the smell. It is strong at first but I know at least these hanging bags smell better than the varnish!! You can get these at Lowes or HomeDepot in the cleaning isle.

Actually, I was just looking some of this up the other day. The smell can develop over time due to deterioration. Here's the text and link to the site that was describing this: ...it has to developed a very noticeable pungent odor. It seems to permeate the entire carpet and come may possibly come from the backing. We have only had it spot cleaned by a professional to clean up dog messes. The odor was there before that occurred. Could it be from the material in the rug? Any suggestions? ANSWER: Hello Denise, Thank you for your question. I'm guessing that the smell is a foot/rotten egg smell. Unfortunately, what you're smelling is the latex glue that was used to put together your tufted rug. Over time, the glue of these rugs begins to break down and smell. It is not something that will come out, as it has to do with the rug's age and generally gets worse with time. I wish I had better news. Being in the cleaning business, this is a problem that comes up all the time, and believe me, if there were a fix, we'd have found it by now. The shorter lifespan of the hand-tufted rugs is the reason why I suggest that our customers only purchase hand-knotted rugs and sometimes machine-made if those are out of the budget. Try putting it in the clothes dryer on low or medium for an hour or so, maybe repeat this every day for 3-4 days. The combination of heat and tumbling and air may help.

Oh, I understand now. Put a couple lawn chairs outside and throw the blanket over them. The sun and fresh air may help. And keep washing and drying it.

Try puttong the blanket in a plastic bag or tub with a tight fitting lid and then sprinkle a box of baking soda over it and let it sit for a day or 2. Then you can wash it in detergent with the baking soda added and rinse well.

I second laying it over a couple of chairs outside too, if the soda doesn't work.

peabody1, have you tried vinegar when washing the blanket? As it is probably clean, try putting it through the wash cycle with a cup of white vinegar, and add another cup when it begins filling for the rinse cycle. The odor of vinegar will be gone (and the chemical odor too, I hope) by the time the cycle ends. Vinegar has worked amazingly well for me on everything from new items with odd chemical odors to blankets reeking of cigarette smoke. The only truly recalcitrant odors I have dealt with are from scented laundry products--it takes extraordinary effort to rid textiles of perfumes!

I just got a few new Vellux blankets and the toxic smell gave me a headache and hives. I don't know what chemical they are using on these, but after 3 washes they still have the same chemical smell. I also aired them out in an empty room for a week and that did not help. I have Vellux blankets that I've had for years and I know they didn't have this problem or I would have returned them. These blankets will be going back. Even my dog was sneezing ... which is very unusual.
