Need to know asap if I should buy a Bosch DW

My 11 yr old KA DW has finally given up cleaning and I think I want a Bosch. Wanted one 11 yrs ago, but worried about no heated drying cycle and no food grinder. I'm over those issues now, but am concerned about interior size and how to load it properly!

I've read a lot of message boards and some negative comments about loading it. And I am concerned about the 2 sections of tines going in different directions. I take it you load plates in the front section facing front?? Does that work easily? Is there enough room for a normal load?

In other words, do you find this method of loading dishes/pots/pans to be convenient or a problem and what hints do you have for me. Just share your experience, please!!!

The best advice is to take your most commonly used dishes with you to the store and check the fit.

I have a Bosch D/W and I recommend Bosch D/W's to my service customers if they ask what they should get.

I have a Bosch Evolution and I actually don't love it. I hate scraping dishes... (I got used to my old dishwasher with the food grinder. We don't put huge chunks in or anything, but we totally don't scrape them of regular bits of food left on an otherwise empty plate. The problem with the old dishwasher was that it was LOUD! It was a cheap one, though.) So we don't scrape our dishes enough, I suspect, and as a result, nothing gets sparkling clean, ever. The silverware is always dull and spotty, if not plain dirty. The computer went out on ours the other day and we were quoted $400 for a new one (including installation), so I'm taking the opportunity to look for a new model!

Bommai, We actually went to the Miele showroom for the Diamante Plus. After checking the Miele site, I knew I really wanted Turbo Setting and Delay Start. (The Model Overview on the site shows one model of Diamante Plus that has both of these.) The cutlery tray is split on the Optima, so you can remove a portion of it for taller things. This has already come in handy for us. I think Antss is right about not being able to tell the difference in acoustic levels. We ended up with the Optima G2432SC which has the control panel in front and and the pre-finished Clean Steel. It's the least expensive Optima with 14-place settings. Former owners of our house remodeled the kitchen in the late 80s with oak, so the fridge and dishwasher had oak panels. Built-in fridge has since been replaced with stainless, so the new d/w helps update things a bit. Another thing that got us to the store was that someone on this forum mentioned a forthcoming Miele price increase in February. A sure bet to stop our overthinking!

The most common problems I've encountered (I'm not in the bus...just fixed a lot of machines over the decades.) are inadequate fill, failure to heat the water, and obstructed drain lines. Not saying that's what you've got...obviously don't know. Can tell you, finding out what the problem is should be pretty easy for any experienced person willing to spend a little time. Basically, fill solenoids and drain-path clearing are cheap/easy. Pumps and circuit boards are still easy but expensive. Again, diagnosis from experienced person shouldn't take long. It's not complicated or magical. DW's are basically pretty simple machines. If you can obtain diagnosis cheaply, I'd recommend it. My least-favorite discovery is heat failure due to fried relay (the element itself almost never goes bad) which relay is usually integral with the circuit board which requires replacement en-toto for 150+. That's a bummer because the "tiny" problem then requires thinking fix-vs-replace consideration due to cost. Your brief description makes me suspect fill-level and/or heat trouble. If you're inclined to obtain diagnosis, I would be interested in learning what found.

We have owned three Bosch DW's to date, the oldest of which we have had for perhaps 10 years now. Regarding capacity, I have not seen any significant loss of capacity versus the generic GE we had prior to buying the most recent Bosch. We have a family of four with two teenagers, so our use is probably less than a family with small kids using sippy cups etc but it's more than adequate for daily use. We do have a second Bosch currently in the basement which we use for spillover, mainly after entertaining. The comment about "drying overnight" is ridiculous. Yes, Bosch like other European manufacturers uses residual heat rather than an electric heating element to dry. It works well for glassware and silverware. Tupperware and other plastics are often still damp to wet, and we will sometimes put them on a drying rack before storing. The typical length of a cycle, including drying, is about 90-100 minutes. If you take dishes out as soon as the cycle is over, everything is dry except the plastic ware. Certainly there is absolutely no need to wait "overnight" to get things dry. Reliability has been generally good. We had to replace one circuit board but it was my fault (spilled a glass of apple juice directly down the vent in the door). The soap dispenser is somewhat fragile--on the 10 year old model it pops off the track if you push it too hard, so I'm careful to close them correctly (push door til closed, then push DOWN on the back of the door to lock the door--don't just keep pushing harder and harder to get it to lock). Overall they are very nice machines. Quite quiet, although interestingly the newer ones are a bit louder than the oldest one. Confession--for our ongoing renovation, we are actually getting two Miele Excellas--but that's mainly for the crystal capability and the fully integrated look.

"Our local store rec'd the Electrolux Q50 series. Though reviewed.com loves this machine I'm having a difficult time finding owner feedback. I was told this was Italian time-tested technology, just now brought to the US. And the orbit clean has just come out of patent, but is also not "new". Any leads on further information?" The Frigidaire FPID/FGID and Electrolux EI24ID/EW24ID (including the 50QS) are brand new and seem to be a redesign from the ground up. Electrolux did not have a great reputation for dishwashers in the past; owners complained of poor washability and reliability. However, it's very possible this new line is great and exactly what they needed. You certainly won't find any user reviews at this point, though. If you buy one, let us know what you think! The only real "proven" dishwashers on the market right now are Maytag and the Euro manufacturers Bosch, Miele, and Asko. Although Maytag is a Whirlpool brand, they still use the previous generation Point Voyager tall tub wash system that works well. Whirlpool has transitioned the rest of their brands including KA to the "Global Wash System" which supposedly is quieter and uses less water but is unproven. GE and Electrolux/Frigidaire just introduced complete redesigns, presumably because their previous offerings weren't so great. Those are also unproven.

NO - unless you are considering the top of the range 68 model made in Germany - then maybe.

I have a Thermador -- actually 2 of them, that are similar to their upper models. I twice selected different brands because I was told the filter basket would have to be emptied after every wash -- never even got to not having a heated dryer. I've been using these for over 3 years now and I'm at least as happy as I have been with any DW -- probably happier.

The racking is different. The last one I selected was a KA and I loved the racking -- would have bought another if they hadn't changed it in the meantime. That said, I don't feel that it holds less. Yes, I generally put the plates in the front of the bottom rack and bowls behind them, but I can put more bowls up front or more plates in the back -- even smaller plates on the top rack. Last night I had the front full of dinner plates, the back full of salad plates and bowls to one side and up top. I have 2 different kinds of plates and the classic ones fit in easily. The ones with more of a cupped edge than a rim are not all uniform, and sometimes I have to switch one behind or in front of another or skip a space -- but that's the peculiarity of the plates, not the DW. If you load it well (keeping pathways for water clear to reach and run through) and pay just a little attention to how the silverware is loaded, it all gets clean.

They clean well, run quietly. Before the change in DW detergent, I typically ran a light cycle, but now I run the normal cycle most of the time. I'd buy the same one again.

Thanks all. I ended up buying the top-of-the-line KA Superba with the cutlery tray. Very excited about it and think I made the right choice for me.

You'll LOVE it! Best appliance I've ever purchased :) Try removing the large silverware basket and using the top tray for your silverware. Larger items like serving spoons and ladles can go in the corner caddy. The removal of the silverware basket will give you even more space :)
