Anyone have a Dyson DC14
Comments (12)suesan_2008; Are you sure you want to promote this person you linked to? He does not know what he is talking about. You can scratch some floors with the Dyson, if you do not stop the brushroll. That is why they have the carpet-floor knob or switch. He said "knowing that any vacuum that had a paper or cloth bag was worthless after the first 10 minutes of cleaning" Oh brother! Any vacuum with paper or cloth, will clean very well after the first 10mins. of use. Bags will continue to fill, but should be changed when they are about 3/4 full. He also said something about paper bags only picking up "fluff" and a little bit of sand. Wrong again! There are quite a few vacuum cleaners that will pick up alot of sand. He also said, "Some vacuums really do beat the carpet to death by having a hard plastic bar along with brushes on the rotating bar. A very bad idea no matter what the salesperson might tell you. Let me ask you, "Do you beat the dirt out of your pet or do you brush it?" All you need on a vacuum (with proper airflow) is a brush. I think the reason vacuum manufacturers put bars on is because they know their vacuums can not pickup the dirt so they beat it down into the carpet nap so you donÂt see it and think the dirt is gone." This guy knows nothing about vacuum cleaners. Beater bars do work. They help bring the dirt to the top and allow the dirt to be swept up by the bristles. The dirt is not beat down into the carpeting. Kirby was one company who tried to scare people into thinking beater bars will damage carpeting. The brushrolls changed when people wanted to vacuum their floors with their upright. The beating action has not disappeared. Manufacturers have designed their brushrolls, so that they still beat the carpeting without the use of a beater bar. They just do not beat as hard. They can accomplish this be using stiff brushrolls and brushrolls with brush stiffeners. Next, he says "If your vacuum is working you should never have to shampoo a carpet unless someone spills". He needs to tell this to the carpet cleaners, carpet mills, etc., so they can get a good laugh. There is so much more I can bring up, but I think I have made my point. If anyone goes to that link, please do not treat it as "gospel" or fact. He is just a Dyson promotor. Look at the links at the bottom. He links to a site that discusses James Dyson and also a link to a site where someone writes how Amway did Dyson wrong....See MoreSmartstrand vs Dyson Vacuum Cleaner
Comments (7)I had my original Dyson 07 animal vacuum for over 13 years and loved it enough to replace many parts over the years, but it was beginning to go downhill. When I found a new top of the line Dyson DC41 @ 25% off after Thanksgiving, I jumped on it. Received it a few days later and was thrilled with it. A few weeks later, purchased new carpeting--the Mohawk's Smartstrand for our family room, hallways and bedrooms. Had it installed about a week before Christmas. Disclaimer: I do NOT recommended any home improvement projects right before the holidays. Not sure what I was thinking :-) That evening I whipped out the vacuum and couldn't believe how difficult it was to push. Literally stained my back. The carpet was dense, but not super high like a shag so I thought this was an issue with the vacuum. I couldn't find anything regarding the Dyson having an issue on thicker carpets and after spending about 20 minutes, it finally occurred to me to do a search using the key words Mohawk, Dyson, vacuum, and problem. Bingo. I was crushed when it hit me that there wasn't anything I could do, including leaving the vent open on the wand, to make it work. I was going to have to let the Dyson go and, as far as I knew, there wasn't another vacuum that came close to its level of performance. I read everything I could find regarding vacuums that performed well on the Smartstrand, including Mohawks recommendations (short list on Mohawks site--which they seem to have created after talking with some popular/ mainstream names. After more research, I still lacked a firm recommendation. The only name that stuck out: brand Riccar , series name Brilliance. Price tag (0ver $700.00) was a deal breaker--I thought Dyson was up there. After getting by with a Eureka for a week, I knew that I had to find something else, so I contacted the owner of a local vacuum store (small business, one owner/operator with about 20 years experience. Luckily, he had recently become aware of the Smartstrand issues and had helped a fellow Dyson lover the week before that had the same issue. His recommendation: the Riccar Brilliance. Price tag was slightly lower (around $600.00). He gave me a brand new one to test drive for a couple of days and I couldn't be happier. It actually works better than the Dyson in terms of cleaning multiple types of floors, especially the Smartstrand (on extra high level) and is made of higher quality materials. I called the owner on the second day and said I'd be keeping her. VERY happy, worth the extra $100.00 and is outperforming my Dyson. My family includes 3 sons, a hubby (general contractor), 2 dogs with light coats, 2 long hair cats--redheads, no less ;-) and a maroon-bellied conure. I'm a clean freak, so this combo is beyond challenging. I am skeptical of people that write long recommendations like these and am only doing so because it may save someone else from spending as much time going from site to site looking for something that will not only work on the new smartstrand, but make letting go of their well loved Dyson pain free and because I am avoiding a huge pile of laundry...never ending. I'm a teacher, have no affiliation with Riccar or any other businesses. Try going with a local vacuum shop, borrow the Riccar and try it out. It will cost you nothing but a little time. Hope this helps! Julianne This post was edited by annieoakli on Thu, Jan 10, 13 at 5:37...See MoreWhere to Buy Dyson Vacuum??
Comments (10)My Costco has the Animal for $349 I think (that might be the price with a rebate). I bought mine (Allergy and Asthma model) off of one of the home shopping networks so I could use flex pay but if I had know Costco had them, I probably would have purchased one from there. I always forget Costco. They have the Ball online for $399, shipping and handling included....See Moredyson vacuum
Comments (4)I tried doing the slightly reclined trick and it just didn't work. Maybe my stair are less deep. Also, the one I got was a DC17 (not the ball) which is the heavier one that they make. It is a all floors one and I tried it in the kitchen floor, really worked well. I guess I need to get the mini turbine, are they air driven so the brush spins because of suction? There were two that I found, is there any difference, yikes, about $70. Purple one: http://www.abt.com/product/21113/Dyson-MINITURHEAD.html?utm_source=scnextag&utm_medium=sc&utm_campaign=nextag Gray one: http://search.govacuum.com/search?keywords=mini%20turbine%20dyson They have slightly different part numbers....See MoreJerriEllijay
