If you're going to do a quarter-round then it probably won't matter. We retiled our mudroom, left the baseboard but removed the quarter round - when we put it back on you couldn't tell at all.

If you're not doing a quarter round, and you think the edges look bad, then yes have them re-do it - I don't understand why he didn't remove the baseboard in there to begin with.

We are having a situation at our house during our reno where we are unhappy with how one section of the hardwoods came out (too long to type) but we weighed our options in that, we wanted something we could live with as a fix, but we didn't think ripping up the entire floor was the right thing to do either (time consuming, $$ for our contractor to eat b/c of the mistake, just general hassle) so we came up with a solution that we can live with, our contractor can live with, so everyone is happy. In your case, I'd say that would be adding a quarter-round.

I really don't care for quarter round except on wood floors, so I hope that's not what they were planning.

Then you should absolutely make them do it right. :) It does seem like it's wrong, it would be so nice if the tilers would have maybe noticed and said something, but that would have been alot to ask, I guess. Your GC should have been on top of it.

The baseboard will also be lower in the room where it goes behind the tile than it will in the adjacent room where it sits on top of the tile.

It can be done either way, although it should be all one way or the other, and not a mix depending on the area. That said, if the tile goes in with the baseboards in, there are two things to watch for. First (sounds like he screwed up already) is uniform cuts. Although tight joints look better, even wider joints the size of the rest of the grout joints will look good so long as they're uniform.Secondly, that perimeter joint MUST BE CAULKED. If it's grouted, you stand a good chance of the floor tenting within a couple of years (where you hear a loud pop, and all of the sudden, the center of your tile floor is about 6-8" off the subfloor). This is caused by perimeter pressure if there's no give in the perimeter, and all it takes is 1/32" of expansion in the structure, and it'll lift the floor that high. No exaggeration.

Well, it turns out he was planning on using wood quarter round everywhere, which I don't care for. But we had a conversation today where we discussed changing my baseboard in my master/master bath altogether, which frankly I wouldn't mind (mine is very busy). But he was assuming that, and I was assuming the opposite, so that's no good. Weird, his work is usually beautiful.

So if I'm changing baseboard, I guess he's going to have to rip out that baseboard in the toilet room and redo the tiles around the edge. But now the tile's been grouted -- not the perimeter yet, though - I hear you on the caulking. Is that also the case (caulking along edge of floor) when you have floor tile and wainscoting tile, too? Because the same guy did two smaller bathrooms for me a couple of years ago. He did a great job, but I'm pretty sure it's grout on the floor/wall joint, not caulking.

just realized my last post made little sense. I meant my contractor was assuming we'd use quarter round, and I was assuming we wouldn't.

The idea of changing the baseboard just came up today (for various reasons).

But I'm still curious if the perimeter should be caulked when it's tile to tile (as in wainscotting).
