Questions Re Stainless Steel Pots & Glass Mirrors

I would like to know if anyone has some tips on how to keep the outside not the inside of stainless steel pots clean, I do wash them after I use them in nice hot soapy water but, they are not as shinny as when I first purchased them about 1 year ago.

I have alot of mirror doors in my home, I clean them with windex, and then a paper towels, but when the sun comes out I can always see streaks in the mirrors, is it the windex maybe something wrong with it, the towells are fine their is no after lint left on the surface.

Any ideas please.

Clean inside of stainless steel pans with Bar Keepers Friend using a non-abrasive sponge.

Use mixture of alcohol/water to clean mirrors or use all acohol. Wipe clean with a microfiber towel.

I second the use of straight alcohol for windows, mirrors, and even glass TV screens. If I am afraid of overspray damaging anything around or below what I'm cleaning, I will dampen a rag with the alcohol, wipe it on the surface to be cleaned, and when immediately dry it. I like old torn up cotton sheets for drying.

I use Brillo pads on the outside of stainless steel cookware. I was told years ago, that it was the one scouring pad that had jewelers polish in it. Mine shine like new, though they are 30 years old, and have seen a lot of use.

Still anxiously waiting on Wal-Mart for the pot. Next problem is what to use to make the enclosures. Cement board? I have both, and don't think it matters much. Certainly not enough to buy supplemental lids. I would advise that you just go with the lids that come with your cookware, at first. Then, if you develop preferences, you can always convert later on if necessary. A true Dutch oven is a cast-iron pot that has three short legs on the bottom and a recessed lid that will hold hot coals. It was actually used to bake in. They are still available, and are popular with campers and historical reenactors. What is called a Dutch oven nowadays actually is a flat-bottomed kettle, usually with a domed lid. It's used either on the range (great for making stews, pot roasts, etc.) or inside the oven. Most of the ones you see are enamaled cast iron, but plain cast iron is available as well. BTW, there is no such thing as a silly question. Everyone has to start sometime. And we all learn all the time.

I can't speak from experience, but we were recently faced with the same decision. I liked the way the glass looked becase it seemed to open up the space more, but we decided to go with the stainless because we too were worried about the dirt/grease on the glass. Our designer warned against the glass saying it will look terrible if it isn't totally clean. Also my DH went saw a glass model in a store and it was covered in dust (as usual in a store) and it looked terrible. The SS model in the same store looked fine - and I'm sure no one was cleaning those. (Now please know I do plan to clean my hood... just not often! ;) ) Hopefully the SS will look OK between cleanings too. Hope that helps- good luck!

I have the the Silgranit in white, and I love it except for the whiteness which has stained since 2006 when it went in. It looks like it's the same as what they're now calling the Diamond, in the 1 3/4 size. I use the smaller side as a dish drainer (so no drainer on the countertop.) I've got a garbage disposal in the large side, and the dishwasher on that side. It's deep enough to be able to wash big pots. It's gotten a big rough around the drain but I cook a lot with cast iron and I don't baby the sink whatsover. If I had it to do over I would get another one, but in black or grey.

I only use straight rubbing alcohol and black-printed newspaper on my glass and mirrors--never any streaks.

Second the Barkeeper's Friend--it's an amazing product. Brillo is okay for occasional use, but it will scratch your pots and pans (it's made of metal, after all)--up to you whether that's acceptable or not.

I use a product called Orvis for all glass surfaces. I got it at a janitorial supply place. As I rmember I thought it was rather expnsive at the time but that was years ago. I still have what must be a lifetime supply and I have given alot away. It works amazingly well with both squeegy or rag or paper and no elbow grease to speak of.

Can't help you on pans.

Just this week I found a product called "Sprayway Glass Cleaner." It comes in a blue and white can and I found it at Home Depot. I've been looking for it since I noticed that the car wash used it.

NO STREAKS! I had been using Windex and the windows were really streaky in the sunshine. Now they are . . . clear as glass.

As for the glass, another trick I learned is to use paper coffee filters instead of paper towels when cleaning glass. Supposedly the coffee filters don't have the same kind of "binders" that paper towels have.

I bought Brio ultra-performance microfiber towels (a set of 3) from Nob Hill and it works really well on the bathroom mirrors. I don't get streaks. I just use just a little water sprinkle to get the mirror slightly wet and then I wipe off with the towel. I bought a couple of different microfiber towels from Costco before the current towels and they didn't work well on my mirrors.
