I told the kd dozens of times that we planned to put our cooktop in the base and although they always said not to modify the drawer base until we had the cooktop they never said that certain tops might not fit. We were trying to get the cab to the left of the drawer base bigger (from 15 to 18) and if we had known, I would have gone with a 33 inch base and the 15 inch cab. But as poorowner said a minor modification is manageable and I am happy that I have a kitchen :-) altho it is still a work in progress. ccoombs1-- I did a quick spot check and several of the 36 inch tops only require a 34 or less cut out. poorowner-- would you share your bosch choice.

I did more analysis -- here is my conclusion looks like the Miele overall has the most power, a lot of functionality and reputation for quality, Although Wolf also has a good reputation for Quality but the functionality and power is disappointing. Samsung looks to have the most functionality/features, I like the knob and blue burner, but I am concerned about reliability and quality, I was impressed with the Bosch all around with power and functionality, but quality of Miele may be better. although Helen is happy with her Bosch. I have it narrowed down between Bosch and Miele. I saw some information that said not to mix brands if you are putting the cooktop over the oven.

Also keep in mind that you are introducing a source of heat under the induction cooktop. Heat and electronics do not play well together. It is possible that you may shorten the life of the cooktop if you are not careful about the choice you make. This is probably why manufacturers insist upon using like products in this configuration. They may have ways to expel the heat with their own equipment. If I were designing something like this venting would be a priority in my remodel. It would probably involve small fans that had access to cool air to introduce into the cavity for the cooktop and possibly one to expel the warmer air. Preferably outside, however outside the cavity into the kitchen area is preferable than trying to cool with hot air. I believe keeping the electronics cool is key to a long useful life for appliances. Especially ones that produce heat.

I think - but am not certain - that what the OP is wanting to do is: (1) remove the OTR MW and replace it with a hood, and (2) replace an existing range with a separate cooktop and wall oven underneath, but that wall oven would be a speed oven. A speed oven - depending on the model and its features - can microwave, convection bake, broil, some can also steam. I'll post a photo of the 24" Bosch speed oven ($2,000). Having said that, I too think this arrangement will cost a lot and require a lot of figuring out of space tolerances, heat tolerances, plus a new counter insertion. What is your budget for this project? I think you should instead get an induction range and be done - then there'd be no need for new counter and new oven cabinet. You can find a spot for a small inexpensive countertop microwave somewhere. What you are wanting to do I think will be difficult and costly, and require coordination of countertop fabricator, appliance installation, base cabinet purchase and installation, likely electrical work too.
