Comments (20)The compost drawer is just a drawer that I put a stainless lidded bin into. Called a "hotel tray" or "steam table tray", you know, like you see in a buffet. The 1/4 table size fit nicely. I will look up the vender, some commercial kitchen supply place, if anyone is interested. I empty the bin every few days or if I smell it. If I'm busy and it needs to go, I just put it outside on the step toward the compost until I have a minute to empty and rinse it. I have a second tray and can rotate them, but mostly I use just the one, wash it and put it back. We go through a lot of vegetables... no fruit flies. The drawer stays closed unless I am peeling or sweeping scraps into it. It is shorter lengthwise than than the drawer (a salad dressing bottle makes a good wedge at the back) and the rim sits higher then the drawer sides, so it is easy to lift out. A black and tan is Guinness floated over a lighter lager. You need a bent backwards spoon to get the pour right. This thread got me thinking I'll need to dig out that spoon again for St. Patricks Day in a couple weeks....See Morestainless steel appliances, sink and faucets--how to keep clean
Comments (22)morton, I also expect to see wear and patina over time with my ss sink. At the moment, I think I'm in "new car" mode - I want to preserve the shiny newness of everything for as long as possible! DH hasn't seen me clean so much in all the time we've been married :-) Having said that, I have a scratch on the cooktop and an indelible mark on our wood island top already - no biggie. We wanted to choose things that would appear to be appropriate for our old house and old houses have patina. Our old kitchen had a ss sink that was at least 20 yrs old and I certainly didn't baby it the way I'm doing with this one. Looked just fine. I guess it goes back to the linen pants analogy that's often used to determine whether someone would love soapstone or not: if the wrinkles bother you, it may not be for you. And we have soapstone too so I guess you know we don't mind a ding or two! Eliz...See MoreHow To Keep a Silestone Sink Looking Clean
Comments (14)I have a white Blanco sink. I called Blanco when I bought it and they told me to use Soft Scrub. I don't even have to scrub. I just put it in and wash it with the dishrag. Sometimes I use a green scrubby pad with it, if it's the black marks from pans or something. Never any issue with tomato stuff. Soft Scrub works great!...See MoreWhat do you think of black kitchen appliances?
Comments (15)I love black appliances and I did have a mix of SS and black for about 3 weeks and did not mind it at all. In fact, I kind of liked it. My stainless steel solid surface electric cooktop is, of course, black and the sides of stainless fridge are black, my built-in microwave was black. The dishwasher was black. Dishwasher went out during our upgrade of countertop and backsplash, so that was easy to move to stainless and as fate would have it, three weeks after the upgrade was complete, the microwave went out and we replaced it with stainless and I had no aversion to going to a mix for the long haul, but as it worked out it was a short haul. Personally, I prefer black over stainless just as I like other surfaces better than granite, but sometimes the man writing the check gets to pick some of the stuff. I also did not like the black sink when I had it in another house in another life, and in this house even with the black appliances, we immediately changed to a stainless sink (which we had done in the former house) as well. I think black and stainless are a good mix and match whereas some colors just do not do that well. Red, I love that Halcyon color and it will give your beautiful red kitchen a new look. (You have such great taste and that tile is to die for). I loved my red kitchen too but now I am loving my dry sage kitchen just as well. I am sure one day I will tire of that and perhaps, if and when that happens, I can find a pretty wheat color that I will fall in love with....See MoreRelated Professionals
