3/4" wood treads are durable and traditional. You will have to check with the manufacturer of your flooring for their recommendations for stair applications. Often stair treds use wider boards than for flooring.

And are quite expensive.

When we were replacing carpeted stairs with solid hardwood, we had a similar dilemma because I wanted to match my prefinished maple hardwood downstairs. I ended up buying a stair with unfinished maple treads and risers, and ordering extra stain from pre-finished flooring manufacturer (in my case Mirage), and having my contractor stain and poly the stairs to match my flooring.

At the same time we installed prefinished hardwood upstairs, with no ill side effects.

I went with prefinished wood floors. My prefinished flooring manufacturer did not sell any stair treads, but they sell matching nosing, which is sort of like molding. They told me that I would put the same prefinished wood boards on the stairs, then glue the nosing pieces along the edges. This way of doing the stairs was really expensive though, so I opted to buy unfinished wood treads and will try to match the floors as best I can.

For my stair treads, I used 4 coats of poly. Most people use 3 coats. If I was doing it again, it would be 5 coats. Did it myself and had the luxury of time available for the process. Coat and let dry for a week, sand smooth, remove dust and coat again-- drying for a week each time. Still looks good after 8 years of use.
And to make the finishing MUCH easier, the newels and balusters were installed after the treads were finished.
Fill nail holes AFTER the first coat. Filling before the first coat may show "shadows" around the nail locations.
