I think it's everyone's personal call. We have the same logic as you and painted before we installed the flooring. We painted trim after flooring install, but walls before.

We didn't get the cabinet install done until the painting was finished. However because of scheduling issues the trim was not painted out until after the flooring was in. It didn't seem to matter because we had all of the floors covered with paper anyways....highly recommended until moved in

We, my husband and I literally painted every single piece of trim and wall in our house. It took us three months of nights and Saturdays working around 3 young kids. LOADS of fun let me tell ya, LOADS!
Anyway, we did not install flooring until all the paint was done. However a few of the cabinets were in so I did have to tape around them and the kitchen had crown on the cabinets so that was a huge pain to paint around. I would highly recommend totally finishing painting before anything. You may have some nicks and scratches from cabinet installers etc. but that would be way easier to fix after the fact than the whole room.

If you are using rollers or spray consider where the excess ends up.

Floors are usually one of the last things since they require a working HVAC system to make sure the wood can be acclimated.

Trim (baseboard and quarter round) can be finished before installation, requiring minimal touch up for fasteners.

Yep: best to paint before the final light fixtures, flooring, moldings, plumbing and cabs are installed. Not imperative, but it makes life easier.

And I have to say, if you are doing a whole house, buy a power roller system, a decent one. You'll be going over everything at least twice [primer, then color], and you'll want two coats of color in kitchens and baths, possibly other rooms-- goes to the paint and your skills.

I've done it both ways. The downside of painting before everything is done is: 1) if the subs are sloppy, they bash up the newly painted walls/trim, and then you have to patch and paint again (this is the voice of experience speaking), and 2) if there is a lot of dust yet to be created, you end up with a fine coat of it on walls and trim, and then you need to clean everything, whereas painting later means you only have to clean up the most obvious residue, and the paint covers any of the fine stuff you missed!

We painted as soon as the texture on the sheetrock was dry enough. It's easier to touch up nicks in the paint than have to mask off everything. I had always painted walls in existing houses before, and it was so nice not to have to worry about drips and spatters!

You can save yourself a lot of repeat painting in areas by having the trim carpenter come in and hang the cabinetry if they will be finished in place, hang all interior doors/jambs/casing. Label and take the doors into the garage and remove the hinges from the doors as well as the jambs. Run all baseboard if you are using quarter round after the floor install, if not wait except for carpeted areas. Closet shelving can be placed if wood shelves with a wood ledger as well. If cabinetry is site finished, finish those first, tape and paint cover over. Fill all fastener holes in trims, casings, jambs, baseboards, but dont caulk yet. Spray all walls, ceilings and trims with primer. Caulk all trims casings, baseboards, jambs, closet shelvings, etc and spray all these with two topcoats. Roll out the walls & ceilings with two topcoats or spray and back roll after masking off all trims, ( i prefer just to cut in with a brush and roll out the walls to not have to mask). Spray & finish the interior doors in the garage or open room and re-hang. If your trims will be stained, you would fill all fastener holes, stain and finish in place, then paint your walls. Pre-finished cabinetry can be installed after the paint is dry as well as finish hardwares, lighting, window treatments, etc. It all depends on your house concerning trims, floorings, pre-finished or not,etc., but typically you can save a lot of steps by having the trim works,jambs, etc., all in place before you paint your walls and ceilings. Floorings should be one of the last items, imo. If using quarter round after the install of the hard floorings, primer/ one coat paint before install, then fill the fastener holes and caulk, finalizing with a last coat of paint. If not using quarter round, then do the same m.o. with the baseboard in those areas as the quarter round.

My husband is a professional painter and most of his work is high end homes.

Primer and first coat are done as soon as the drywall is ready. Finish coat is the last thing done in the house. This allows for proper caulking.

If he is not the last one in he always has to do lots of patching and repairs. Plumbers and electricians are always redoing and making a mess of the paint job.

The house we are building right now is being painted. Cabinets were in only because they are custom built & installed so they can be stained before the house being painted. He stained all the cabinets & sealed them, cover them & then painted house. We are having him paint the kids rooms & media rooms different colors than rest of the house but he will do just those rooms after electrical is done since they tend to scratch up the walls installing everything. He has already primed them though.

Wow, guys, I wasn't expecting so much response! Thanks! I am going to paint everything before anything goes in. We are doing all of the finish work ourselves, so I don't need to worry about a crew messing up the paint. I learned the hard way how careless construction workers can be when one guy wrote on the finished exterior trim this winter! Of course, I expect DH to find a way to scratch the paint someway, but I'll go with the touch up route. Fortunately, DH is finishing the heating install today, so I'll have a warm house to paint in!
