Building a Home

Looking for Craftsman House plans...

Hello everyone! I am looking for a craftsman style house plan with a bonus room and basement. We are trying to stay between 1800 and 2400 sq. feet. I like the Glenview house plan by Frank Betz, but would like to see a real picture of it built.

I have also looked at the amelia, hedgerow, lincoln park, pepperdine, oxnard, and macallen plans by frank betz.

Does anyone have a picture of any of these built or any other suggestions?

You should look at Alan Mascord's plans. He has quite of few nice Craftsman plans which might meet your parameters. Happy hunting.

I am going to use a car analogy. Both of these cars were built in 1957 by the same car company (Ford-Lincoln-Mercury). One is essentially an expression of every trendy element of the era. The other rejected almost all of that and was based in spirit on a car almost 20 years older. One, in retrospect, has been called one of the ugliest, most excessive cars ever built by a number of automotive critics and historians, However, people liked it at the time, and it has also come to be embraced as an example of the period and collected as a curiosity. The other was almost immediately honored by the Museum of Modern Art, and is considered one of the most beautiful American cars ever built, and it continues to directly influence automotive design to this day. I think a lot of people are building houses analogous to the former during this period of time. I have also posted this analogy before and there were a number of people who said they clearly preferred the Mercury Turnpike Cruiser, not the Lincoln Mark II. They considered the Mark II "boring". Looking for house plans for a house in the woods

One thing I absolutely love about our home in the woods: no curtains are needed for privacy. We are on the asocial side, so we faced our living areas away from the nearest neighbor and toward the wild. I don't mind if the coyotes look in. I think either style you've linked would work well, but it's best to have your house designed specifically for your property.

Like Buzz, just another person building a home with an opinion :) I'd tinker with the larger sqft, as it looks like the kitchen/pantry/entry/laundry area could use some work to make it more efficient. I've never been a fan of walking around a dining room table to get from the kitchen to the sofa. I find the exterior stone facade on the right side going up really high to that window only on the front and not around the side very weird looking since I can see the side also. It looks like a stone wallpaper just on the front. I am a fan of 2-story views, and if the landing space above is usable. In ours, I have a reading nook planned and am excited about getting the light in from the front to carry over to the back. These landings don't appear functional (bridge only?) and don't carry light anywhere (walls?). How do you water plants on that 'shelf' ? If you've got some skin in this, you might consider posting your favorite plan to the kitchen forum and let the pros have a go at rearranging it for efficiency. They're brutal sometimes but are sincere in getting it to work efficiently.

What is the flooring in the rest of the house? Do you have original floors? I have a 1910 craftsman kit home and my floors are original. If I didn't have the hardwoods I would do LVT slate.

To link to a site you can paste it into the box labeled "Optional Link URL", then type in a name in the other box.

Houses with classical pediments or cornice returns have little in common with the American Craftsman Style even if they have some roof eave and rake brackets. The persons designing these houses for Frank Betz don't appear to have much understanding of this style, but that shouldn't prevent you from building one of them houses if you really like it. But you might save yourself some time and effort if you abandoned the term "Craftsman".

If you use on of these designs be sure to have an architect tune it up because, although many are interesting, they generally have an amateurish quality to them; perhaps it's just the renderings, I don't know.

The Bungalow Company, on the other hand, seems to have a good understanding of the Craftsman style and professional architectural detailing.

Because Craftsman House plans are typically compact and convenient, with all floor space and all room beneath the eaves utilized... it's often hard to find plans that utilize bonus or basement rooms.

I've found that with original craftsmans style plans these spaces would have to be additions.
