92 dodge tranny

If the clutches are slipping on this 3 speed auto tranny,

Can the clutches be tightened down to help stop slipping by the outside bolts on the tranny? I read in chilton auto repair but wasn't sure if this is what they ment.

The clutches are in line in the center of the transmission, and are applied by pressurized transmission fluid through passages that go through the valve body, the transmission housing, the front pump and then to the clutch drums. (There are other designs that have center housing supports that also serve to provide fluid flow.) If you have a clutch that is slipping, it can be caused by a loss of pressure. The pressure loss could be a filter, or pump problem (unlikely). Or it could be a loss of pressure through any of the seals that direct the fluid flow to the clutch drum, bad clutch piston to drum seals (common), or of course simply worn out clutches.

Its likely you will need an expert to rebuild the transmission.

If there is no adjustment then why do they say to adjust the clutches after every fluid change. Is recomended by dodge on these 3 speed transmissions. So there is adjustment that can be made to tighten them up after each fluid change. Anyone with any knowledge about these trannies on here?

I really hate the winds we have here on a normal day,but these were by far one of the scariest! My area is a bit of a wind tunnel,the air is never still here,which is why it always boggles me when I have powdery mildew problems on certain plants! We do not lack air circulation that is for sure! I assume there are other factors I am unaware of. Maria,60 is a scary number,I hope you make it through ok! Just a few more hours and we are out of dodge! I have been trying to keep from looking out the window,but I keep hearing these loud bangs and have to investigate......I just came in from wrestling my gate for my deck shut,it was like someone 10 times my size was on the other side pushing it! (S500) And it was eventually declared a "LEMON" and was replaced. Automobiles are still assembled by humans. And those huumans can have bad days and miss something on the line. It happens. And yes, not too long ago all American automakers built crap. But the quality has improved a great deal. So a Buick that's over 10 years old is not even in the same league as a Buick that's 2 years old as far as engineering goes. As a matter of fact, in 1999 we rented a brand new Park Avenue while on vacation. My wife called it a piece of garbage compared to our '88 Volvo. The power seat controls came off in her hand! Yeah, garbage! But I'll guarantee that the Lucerne is light years ahead of that Park Ave! In both quality and engineering.

Yah steveo, typical moronic response. Pull out your wallet and pay for a diesel rebuild compared to a gas engine. Thanks for the thoughtful comment ... *rolls eyes* I gotta figure that if diesels really were all that fragile and all that expensive to maintain, you wouldn't see them in heavy-duty pickups, construction equipment, tractor-trailers, locomotives, steamships, and emergency generators. In commercial applications, money talks. If diesels were as problem-prone as you say, especially in such long-term or critical duty, they'd be in the dustbin of engine history by now. Funny thing -- they're not. Sure, a diesel can break. Sure, repair can be expensive. You don't put Band-Aids on surgical incisions, either. You spend the money so it lasts. And you take care of it to start with. Oh, and BTW, the smoke from diesels is soot, a byproduct of normal diesel combustion. Even a new, properly-broken-in diesel will smoke if you feed it crappy fuel or give it "wide open throttle" in a high gear. My diesel does not smoke under normal circumstances and now, with ULSD, it almost never does.

Hmmmmm.....

You asked if the "clutches" were adjustable, they are not. Now most transmissions that use bands, can have adjustments for the bands, and they can indeed be external and should be checked during a transmission service. BUT, once the transmission is already slipping, its too late for an adjustment to fix that. Besides, a band problem will make the transmission slip in a specific gear when its needed to be applied, it is not used with any of the others. Since you didn't specify that the problem is occurring in a single gear range such as " it only slips in second gear" you did not appear to be asking about band adjustments.

Maybe some of the others that read this site will tell you who has the knowledge and experience to answer your transmission questions. If so maybe that person will respond.....
