A day late, Valentine Table

Saturday night we had a Valentine Dinner. I wanted to post earlier, but my new computer crashed and I'm now waiting for a new one. Anyhoo, there was eight of us, I used black and red plates and bowls from $ Tree. I first used only the red chargers, but they looked lost till I added the placemats. I wanted real roses, but Wal-mart doubled theirs from $10 to $20 for Valentines, so I made do with silk, the velvet and foam cherubs came from a local $ store. As usual with all the preparations for the party I didn't get any pix of the food, the best part. DH made shrimp and grits and we had all kinds of appetizers, salad and bread and flan with cherries for dessert. The little hearts held Valentine candy for carry home favors. Note we still had lots of snow on the ground from our giant snow storm last Wednesday.

Frou..I'm so glad you posted this..your table is lovely!
The color combination is very dramatic. I think by adding the crocheted mats was the perfect touch to set off your plates and chargers and your stems are beautiful.I remember when you got those plates... they look so pretty...I forgot they were from $Tree... if you didn't mention it, I would have never guessed. - The stores always jack up the prices on flowers around VDay. I think your faux roses look just lovely.
Sounds like you had a very nice dinner and with DH cooking such yummy food...what more could you ask for!! lol

What a pretty table Frou! Can't hardly believe those plates came from Dollar Tree! Very striking looking...just beautiful!

We never made a big deal about Valentine'a day nor our anniversary. He was usually not home on those days. The first year we were together I sent him roses. He was building a store at Powell & Market in San Francisco. He almost fainted when they were delivered. He really thought there was a mistake. His first wife never did things for him. One year he bought me a crystal heart. As long as his memory was good he always referred to me as his bride (about 23 years). I gave him a surprise birthaday party on his 49th. It turned out that was the first birthday party he had ever had. My "gift" to him was a hard hat. I stenciled "Super Jew" on it. He really got a hoot out of that. I have a picture of him wearing it while building the first house he built for us. His 80+ years old Mother always sent each of us a check on our birthdays. He always told me to take his check and spend it on myself. When he was to select commemorative jewerly for his 25 years with Walgreen's, he selected two diamond pendants for me. I enjoyed using my silver flatware on a daily basis. One Christmas he bought me stainless flatware. He said, I should save the silver for special occasions. I never told him other wise and put the silver away and began using the stainless. When he went the nursing home a counselor asked him what he was proud of, meaning his accomplishments. He looked at me and said, "my bride". It gets no better than that. My favorite picture of us.

Oh nana...I agree with all...this is very cute with lots of 'Whimsey'. I love all those cute cherubs...and what a fab price for all of them. I like how you placed them down the middle of the table too. I didn't see those pretty heart boxes or plates at CTS..for sure I would have snapped some up. Good idea using stickers on the stems.. also those package ornaments work perfectly as nap rings. I'm glad you posted this fun setting with us..and shared some clever tips too. jane

Thank you everyone for your kind comments. I had fun putting this together and got so many ideas from all of you. I just started looking around the house and pulling pinks and reds together. A lot of the glassware pieces were the ones I got from my niece that were destined for the GoodWill store. OA - the crewel embroidery piece was done by my late husbands grandmother. She did it back in the 70's. I am blessed to have several pieces of her work and have them hanging in several places in the house. I just love old needlework and have many of my mothers, my aunts and my grandmothers work plus I have done several pieces. There is such a homeyness (is that a word) and comfort zone for me to be surrounded by old quilts, linens and needlework. Thank you all again - I do love this forum ..... Lynne

Thanks for commenting, punk, sorie, kathleen, marlene & purplemoon ... punk..blizzards are over & "sunshine" just makes all the diff in the world! Very cold yet tho...but do-able! I'd love to visit your home...from what you share, it's just downright SWEET! sorie ... that print is by Robert Duncan called "April Storm" ... by his signature it says 1980 ...but I bought this print at an frame shop & had it framed 7 or 8 yrs ago...it is one of my favs! kathleen...no, the tree I bought on an after Christmas small town shopping trip...at a specialty store...they had used it in their display decor...& had it for sale...I was in heaven! I'd been wanting one for some yrs since I saw the grapevine handmade ones at a craftshow that sold for lots of $$$. It would be fun to try to make a "small" one. PM...hey, next mo (March 20th) is first day of Spring...so maybe you can decorate for that! You'll be bringing out all those beautiful bunnies!! You've got alot going on right now, woman! frou...very RICH & bold! Love the R&B combo! Your cherubs silhouttes are so cute & look lovely w/roses! Your room is so very pretty w/the pearls hanging from your chandi & even the snow outside (have you had enough now?)

Love your table, Frou. The black table cloth is the perfect backdrop for the lace placemats and pretty dishes. Dollar Tree has some cool things. No one would ever know the roses are silk. The boa gives the table a flirty look. I think the cupids are adorable. Dinner sounds delicious.

Frou, agree with all the above comments. Oh so pretty and love the crocheted place mats on the black tc. Sounds like you had a wonderful dinner with plenty of food and the perfect dessert!

My new job is closer to the $Tree, so I've become an addict, but I've found out the more often you go the more likely you are to find the good stuff. I bought a whole new set of bright striped plates and wine glasses last week, I'll try to post pix. A funny thing about the boa, DH asked if we we're going to eat with those feathers on the table, you would think he would know by now. Jeanne, yes I'm tired of the snow now, but it sure was pretty.

Gorgeous tablescape, Frou. Love the cherubs and roses centerpiece. That red boa was the perfect touch. The stemware you used looks so sparkly in your pictures--the light reflecting off the snow outside was just right! ;o)

Haven't had lunch yet, so reading about your yummy food made me hungry! Glad you had a good time.

Frou, I saw those plates at $tree and they SCREAMED MARDI GRAS to me....So of course I had to have them, along with the wine glasses and water glasses. I have to get a few more things and then the table will be complete. Mardi Gras colors are so bright and cheerful just what we need at this time of year.
