Hi Everyone~

Sorry it took me a few days to get to an update. Had my surgery on Tuesday. All went well with that, but I had so much pain that I was in tears most of Tuesday night and Wednesday. Not something I want to relive. I finally got one of the nurses to believe me when I told her they weren't giving me enough pain meds and asked her to call the doctor. I'm not a little person in any respect of the word. So, when she called, another doctor was on call, but as it turned out, that doctor was one of mine as well...he told them that he knew me and that they needed to quadruple what they were giving me. He knew it sounded strange, but that I needed a huge amount of pain meds at first. So, they did that and I was better in a matter of an hour. After that, I was like a different person! My knee is quite swollen today and stiff, but the PT people came yesterday to get everything set up for next week and he told me I was already ahead of the game in walking, stretching and just general getting along.

Thanks so much for the thoughts and prayers and I would ask that you continue them. I know they make a difference. Been sleeping a lot and just generally taking it easy. And yes, I have pain, but it is a different pain all together. I'm looking forward to walking without a limp and without the endless pain I've had for the past few years.

I'm hanging in there. My gardens better look out this summer....I'm getting antsy.

Marlene, It was so good to hear from you. I am glad that everything went well with the surgery and all that is behind you. Now you can concentrate on getting better and be ready for summer. As someone who has been there, I can say that it is wonderful to walk without pain and a limp

Glad to hear that it is all over and now you are on the road to recovery.
So sorry to hear about the terrible pain to start, but glad it is under control now.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery and a beautiful garden this summer.

Traditionally, before the technology of refrigerating them was developed, most new roses were planted as bare-roots in the late fall. Transplanting roses as bare-roots is much the easiest way to do it. In your zone, there is a risk that a warm December could cause roses to grow out, freeze back, and deplete the plants or even kill some of them. However, that's the way I'd do it, as opposed to the expense and labor of potting. Just dig them with 12" roots and canes, strip all leaves, label them and bag them. Store in the shade until you can plant. They should keep well at temperatures mostly between 25 and 40 degrees Remove any growth buds that break before spring. After planting, spray the canes with dormant-strength Wilt Pruf.

My 2 cents...I think you need better foundation plantings. You've got that huge expanse between the windows, can you do some sort of evergreen there? Sounds like you're looking for a zen-ish feel. Why not try a japanese maple instead of the ginko? DO NOT do junipers. You will despise them. I am trying to get my DH to pull the last one out. Plus they're just plain ugly and not aesthetically pleasing in the landscape. (the one we're taking out is to the left of the birdbath.) There are lots of other nice evergreens that would be far better. Like the azalea in this picture. Maybe you could create a dry streambed using your boulders and river rocks? That would take up a lot of the ground you're trying to cover. And then you could put down a mossy ground cover (put down plastic or metal barriers between the island and the lawn first). Think groundcovers and you won't need so much mulch. I did this a few years ago, and I planted rose bushes, day lillies and lavender in the bed. It's so full and lush, and the weeping pussy willow fills out in the summer. Wintertime it's budding out the pussy feet. I have very little problems with weeds, I put down the weed barrier and about 5" of bark dust. Now the plants have cut out weeds. Definitely spend some time on the landscapers forum.

Kaismom asks a good question.....where do you put all that messy media stuff if not in the living room? Thankfully, the TV has given up the throne as the most important electronic device in our homes. I grew up with it firmly ensconced on its living room throne. That meant no real visitation could go on in that space. Then there came the stereo, cassette player, 8-track player, CD and VHS and now DVD and TiVo and BluRay, and thumb drives and the biggest thing of all, which I think has finally knocked the electronics and all those WIRES out of the living room, THE COMPUTER, THE TABLET, THE E-READER, and we have a new need. At our house, we do not have a home office. Instead, we have a STUDY. I mean, we are both retired. We do not work, except on personal projects. And we read. Holy cow, do we ever READ! And since we have no need for a second bed, unless it is a daybed, we turned our #2 bedroom into a STUDY. PERFECT place to put all our electronics. And that included the flat panel TV. The charging cords for the cell phones, the tablet, the GPS even, the DVDs, the CDs, and I figured out how to play my DVDs on the computer screen, which now doubles as a TV. They are even building the monitors these days to moonlight as a TV when the old tower or separate OS is junked. So I'd say, move all that STUFF out of the living room. If it is possible, make the LR into your guest room. We shall do that, if it looks like we might need to have guests stay over, by mounting french doors to close it off. Usually a LR is the most spacious room in the house. And it is frequently not on the traffic pattern one uses in the mornings to get ready for work. I give myself a pat on the back for thinking about it. Talk about UNDER-UTILIZED SPACE, that is the living room if set up as a separate space. Keep it looking pretty. I mean, you could move that "entertainment center" into the former bedroom/guest room, and move a hidden Murphy bed into the living room, yet keep the space sensational for every occasion. I'm married to an Irishman, and heaven knows, they LOVE TO TALK, so having a sitting room area which is quiet enough for meaningful conversation is a big plus. Up in MA, I furnished the real living room, which was fairly small, had a fireplace, with a simple love seat facing the fireplace, and two armed dining chairs on either side of the fireplace. Just enough table surface for us to set down a wine blass or a beer can or a Diet Coke--because this is the place which set the mood for good adult conversation.No TV, no radio. Well, that's my take on where to put it. And that's all I've got to say about that. :)

Your plant is not getting enough sunlight. This is the only way that plants produce their food, and yours can't photosynthesize properly. The soil is also being kept too dry. That's not the main issue with yours, but it is adding to the stress that your plant is going through. I have mine outdoors right now, but I brought it in to snap a couple photos of it for you. It gets bright, indirect/dappled sunlight all day long. When I brought it back inside, I noticed that its soil was bone dry. So I'll let the whole pot soak in water for about an hour or so. Then I'll let the excess water drain away. As you can see, my plant is doing just fine, even though the soil has dried out. I don't usually let this happen, but we haven't gotten any rain in a while, and my plants dry out much faster. I would thoroughly water your plant and give it more sunlight. Bright, indirect sunlight. That's the only way your plant can feed itself, via photosynthesis.For a size reference, the plastic inner pot is 5" across, and the height of my plant from the base of the decorative outer pot is just under two feet tall.

Marlene, I'm glad your surgery is behind you. As I said before everyone I know who had this surgery feels like a new person.
I am sorry to hear that you had to experience so much pain until you got the right amount of pain meds.

Congrats on being through the surgery! It's hard to believe that they just wouldn't give you more pain meds when you said you needed them!

It's great that you're progressing so quickly now. Good luck with the PT. :)

I was so happy to see you able to post. Tho hearing how you suffered (needlessly) sounded terrible! Thank goodness the other doc knew you and took care of things.

Tho PT sure won't be fun, or easy, hopefully the worst is over. Come to think of it, keeping you 'behaving' and following orders might be the worst. ;o)

I know you are going to be attacking your gorgeous gardens full force this Spring!

Marlene..so good to hear from you.
I'm sorry though for the unnecessary pain you experienced. I know, with the right dose of pain meds, how quickly the pain goes. I remember that from last year with my foot/ankle surgery.
Now it's time for you to look forward towards the road
to recovery. For sure, by Springtime, when you're out in your garden, you'll be so happy it's done and overwith!

Marlene, thanks for letting us know your surgery is over and you are home recuperating. Bless your heart, pain enough to cause tears should have told those nurses something! Glad the Doc got it all squared away for you. Now you just need to "tough it out" for the PT and soon all this will just be a faded memory. Hugs, Luvs

Glad you are well on way to recovery. Been praying for you & Jilly right along. Pain meds do make a great deal of difference as pain adds stress & slows healing. Keep on working at it & even if you get flu or cold keep up the exercises so knee won't "freeze up"like my son's did, don't want that! PT is well worth the pain & energy! Sounds like you are ahead of most already! Jan

Great news that it's over & all went well (except for more pain meds needed) ...now just keep on keepin' on, girl ...cause the PT will get you back into good shape! Thanks again ladies for all of the well wishes and support! It really helps to have such great friends. PT and OT have been going well this week and the PT thinks I can graduate to a cane if I feel comfortable with it. I use the cane some, but still feel more grounded with the walker. Been trying to behave and have been doing my exercises everyday. It is getting better, though my whole leg is really swollen. I'm told that's natural, so I'm not concerned. The other thing I wanted to tell you is that my OT lady is just like us! She loves TS, yardsales, etc. and loves the thrill of the hunt. I have really enjoyed having her here.

Marlene, I am glad to hear you are doing well with your therapy. I do not want to alarm you, but I do want to let you know my experience. I had had a blot clot years ago... so after my surgery when my knee was swollen and ice packs did not reduce the swelling I was concerned. The therapist and the physician assistant both said the swelling was natural, but I got upset and the doctor ordered an ultra sound. I had a small clot in my calf. I was put on blood thinner and everything is fine. I hope you don't think I am being interfering, but my situation with the swelling sounded like yours. Marylee

Marlene...glad you 'checked in' with us and that everything
is going well, as expected.
Must be pleasant to have an OT who shares the same interests as you. I'm sure this
helps the time go by quickly with the stories you both share.
I hope the swelling goes down quickly so you can use that cane to move
around more freely, and in no time at all, you'll start to see each day get easier and better. >> right in time for Spring Gardening!

Marlene, I'm so glad you have an OT gal you can really enjoy. PT "terrorists" can sure give you a run for your money. LOL. And I hope you sail thru it. My friend with fibro here had such a hard time recovering from her knees being done, it really slows healing of ANY thing down. That stinks! But she is walking great now.

Marylee, its a good idea you shared your experience. A person can't be too careful and knowing things to look out for is a help. Glad you did ok thru your recovery.

Thanks again everyone! And thank you too Marylee. I plan to talk to my OT again tomorrow because the swelling is down some, but it's not coming down as I would like it to. I have been on blood thinners since the surgery (injections in my stomach twice a day), but those finished up yesterday. I'll keep you posted. Thanks for the info though.
