EEK! Decision time (cooktop/ovens)

My kitchen guy needs to order my cabinets by this next week, so I have to know my appliance choice. Other factors have changed my original choice (from GE Monogram 48" range), so I'm leaning towards a Monogram 36" gas cooktop (w/ grill) and double wall ovens. I'm assuming the cooktop and ovens would be cheaper than the 36" range plus another single wall oven, so that's the way I'm leaning, today.

With the professional cooktop, there are fewer local places with which to compare prices, so I've been looking online. I know a lot of you order online, but for some reason that scares me....... Who installs it if it's not the store from which you bought it? Warranty? Who works on it if need be?

Any thoughts for me as I (unnecessarily, I'm sure) agonize over this detail.

Your kitchen guy should have someone to install the appliances. They're pretty straightforward. I'm not sure about service though.

Personally, I find a cooktop/wall over arrangement to be preferable to a range so I won't argue with your choice there, but unless you're living in a motel and need to get things moving, I'd suggest you not rush your decision because your cabinet guy says you have to. He can wait. It's YOUR kitchen. (On the other hand it can help to get pushed a little, but still, you ought to be sure!)

The warranty is the same, no matter where you buy it, and the warranty service people would be the same...Decided by the manufacturer. Monogram is sold in territories, I believe, so some on-line sellers won't be authorized to sell to you. Other manufacturers do that, too...Not sure which ones. Make sure that whomever you buy from is an 'authorized dealer' for that brand.

A lot of times, the time factor and shipping costs kill whatever savings you'll find online...and maybe a local business will try to meet the price or offer you other incentives. They may not be able to cut the actual price of the appliance because of set pricing.

If you had decided on the Monogram range previously, and were happy with the configuration and features, I think you'd still be happy with the Monogram rangetop and oven.

Emjay, it seems to me the built-in 30 inch oven would definitely be best for your back. The other consideration you really haven't mentioned is that a 36 inch oven is going to take longer to heat (and consume more energy) as well as be harder on your back. If you don't need the larger oven, then the built-in is definitely your best bet. Also, I've used a roaster for the turkey, and although it was a nice, juicy bird when finished, the skin didn't crisp nearly as well as it does in the oven. I wouldn't do it again unless I absolutely had to just because it wasn't as "pretty" on the platter. I'm in my mid-50s and if you already have back issues, believe me they don't get any better. Definitely give that serious emphasis in your decision-making. Good luck and I look forward to hearing how your reno progresses!

I don't have a range because we can't give up the cabinet space under our cooktop. If I could I would have a range (your choice) because the space use makes more sense than a wall oven cooktop. Also, I have read that ranges have less trouble with electronic control damage from using the self-clean feature of the oven. I don't personally like induction. I bought an induction hot plate and couldn't use it because I have a heart pacemaker. Also I checked our Cuisenart cookware and none of them was magnetic anyhow.

smm5525, I have posted some layout plans before, but things have changed over time. Here is a PDF with the layout and my organization sheet which details what kitchen item would go where. It's hard to post a screen shot, because it's too large to capture it all. You can follow the link to see it. NOTE: I am hoping to gain back enough inches to be able to make the base cabinets on each side of the cooktop equal size. Because design was created on a grid the refrigerator cab is drawn as 39" when in reality it'll only require 37.5". And I'm guessing on the Super Susan dimensions. We had a cabinet design guy come measure things today. He took a printout and is creating a "real" plan we can use. He sent me a message today saying that even though it's in Excel it's good and easy to figure things out. He should have it ready by tomorrow. I can't wait. We'll decide on what cabinet brand once we get some estimates. We're leaning towards Plato. Walnut with the grain going horizontally. Islands painted blue, with a more furniture-look to switch things up. We're planning on putting in a much larger window over the sink. You'll in the PDF that I have indicated where the existing window is in a dark green with the expanded window size in a lighter green. Let me know what you think. :)

Agreed. 30" oven. Re the cooktop, generally you want the hood to be wider, so 30" cooktop with 36" hood, or 36" cooktop with 42" hood. Rule of thumb: Most people rarely use more than three pots at the same time. If you were an exception you wouldn't have already said you're fine with three. Given those things, I think you might be fine with 30". I would recommend, however, that you consider the asymmetric ones with different size and power elements, even though that's harder for people who don't know your stove to pick up on to use. Having a double ring for stock pot/bean pot is very useful! Even the European brands with the oblong flex inductors offer hybrids with the big rings in the middle because they're so useful. OTOH, you might prefer having four more similar elements if you never really use anything bigger than a 3 quart sauce pan, but have several going at once. Look carefully at all the options for the 36". Make sure you're not missing out on something that you really want if you go for a 30". After that, just choose the one that appeals to you most.

LOL, Jo Ann....no, I haven't, and I just today told an appliance salesman what I was really wanting (1 + 1/2), and I told him I wasn't the only one who wanted it that way.

If I had money to waste, I'd figure out a way to convert that GE standing range--that has that configuration--into a double wall oven (just "ignore" that it has a cooktop and have it hidden). I can just see the kitchen guy's expression if I told him that.

I do have to make a decision on the appliances since they affect the cabinets, which need to get ordered--don't want to slow up the construction because we're trying to get in by June 30 to get the tax credit.

There is a rebate on Monogram appliances. It depends on what you buy, check it out on the monogram web site.
