Anyone-ovens side-by-side instead of one on top of the other??

I'm planning on the Miele single oven and the Miele steam oven--so, of course, I was planning on putting the steam oven on top of the regular oven. I'm short and also getting up there in years (64) so want things to be as comfortable and easy as possible in our new build. Has anyone put their two ovens side by side? It just seems it would be more convenient for me, at my height and age. If so, do you like it that way after you did it? How does it look? My ovens will be on a wall with my ref. and freezer columns. Any thoughts on this would be appreciated as I need to order the cabinets for this wall....like a week ago..LOL. Any pictures, if possible, would also be nice. Thank you, Jeanie

We've done this a few times . It works great if you can devote the real estate to it. They generally look best on a very long run of cabinetry.

If fact if you look at the brand Fagor they have 24" wide ovens with left and right swing doors, so the would look like a 48" oven with French door opening and easier access, BlueStar also does it with 24" gas wall ovens with swing doors

repac, yes it can be done, and we did it, eleven years ago, and it continues to work today. But our preplanning involved reseach into the vertical dimensions and the required clearances of the units that we installed. If you commit to the brands and models first, you may find that you lack sufficient vertical clearance. The depth (under counter) of currently available induction cooktops ranges from about 2 inches in a few models to as much as 18 inches in one model. Also, it happens that the thinnest, most pancake-like, induction cooktop (the LG LCE30845) vents above the counter (at the rear) instead of (as is more common) into the space under the cooktop, and so requires minimal clearance above the top of the oven. The LG is only 30" wide, however, so you would need two of them to fill your 60" wide space. Not surprisingly, there are also large dimensional differences among models of wall oven. We chose a Bosch HBL645A UC (since replaced in the Bosch line-up) specifically because it had a compact vertical dimension, and even allowed us to install a shallow storage drawer (for unused oven racks, etc.) under the oven.

It's a cool look, and it can be nicely functional as well, but it's one for someone with both a large kitchen and a large budget. A wall oven and cooktop already adds a minimum 3K to a budget over "just a range" if you're talking middle of the road appliances and cabinetry. A wall oven alone costs as much as a range, and then you add in the cabinet to hold it and the cabinet to hold the cooktop plus the cooktop, and you're at 3K more pretty quick. If you're talking upper range cabinetry and appliances, that could be 10K ore more expensive than a similar range equivalent. Now, if you're talking one of those "works of art" French ranges, maybe that would be more expensive, but people who are willing and able to spend that much money are pretty rare. Now, you take that 3K and add at least another 2K for a second wall oven and cabinet, and that's being conservative. Your side by side wall ovens will cost you a minimum of 5K more than choosing something like a 30" GE Profile grade range. With you doing a "whole house" remodel, a few thousand here and there may not make a big difference to you. (Yeah right! LOL!) The average kitchen remodel in the US is 30K, and that's for a simple replacement remodel with low to mid grade appliances and low to mid grade cabinetry. You're talking about doing something above average in your layout, and you sound like you are doing some structural work as well. You're already above 30K. Easy. Your final budget figure for your kitchen will depend on whether or not you bring significant DIY to the table, as well as what you can creativly source. But, the key to keeping your budget as low as possible is to work within the existing layout as much as possible. That usually nixes side by side wall ovens. Side by side wall ovens can work, but it's not often a kitchen is large enough to support such a choice and the homeowner can justify the additional expense in the budget.

I think it can look very nice. I don't think the asymmetry will be an issue - the island already adds asymmetry since you have an island overhang on one side. I don't have a U kitchen (more of a wide galley kitchen) but we have 31" recess on one side and 24" on the other. We have a peninsula on one one side, so it's not that comparable -- but we don't notice the difference at all. Here's a picture (from Houzz) of a frame built around a full-depth refrigerator. A couple suggestions: 1) It helps to be a bit more specific on dimensions. The picture above is like our kitchen in that the countertop depth matches the depth of the side panel. With the overhang, your lower cabinets will probably go out 1.5" less than that countertop depth. The point being -- base the dimensions on the countertop depth in this case, not on the cabinets. 2) I have a Samsung and they require 2" clearance behind the refrigerator for proper ventilation. There are a lot of reports of their refrigerators not cooling correctly when you use less clearance. Other vendors have a smaller requirement but you have to go off the vendor recommendation and not an industry standard. The 2" clearance requirement was the reason I went down to the Samsung RF263BEAESR/AA, which is slightly smaller depth. This post was edited by calumin on Sat, Oct 5, 13 at 18:09

Eek. I couldn't even touch my countertop for a count of 2. After further testing, it seems that the door doesn't close well enough. I noticed a gap in the gasket(?) that runs around the door and was able to shove it closed. The gap was by the hot spot. This seemed to reduce the exterior heat, but the door and oven body still got pretty hot where they meet. Would adjusting the door for a better seal help? Or do I need to lean on the door while baking? :P Somehow the knobs and top front of the range aren't getting hot, so it's not all bad. (Or logical.)

We have side by side ovens. One is a 24" and the second is a 27". Both are Kitchen Aid ovens. We have a long row of cabinets and the Sub Zero refrigerator is to the left. There are cupboards above and below the ovens which are of good size to store things (the one over the 27" oven is setup for vertical tray/shallow pan storage). We like the placement of the ovens as they are not too high or too low so getting things in and out of the oven is easier, no bending over or getting on your toes. The ovens are the standard type where the door hinges down. My wife lusts after one of the French Door ovens.

If you have the inclination, tune into Leave it to Beaver and wait to see June Cleaver's kitchen. She has two GE ovens side by side as you've described!

You don't see side-by-side ovens often because most people simply do not have enough room to pull it off. The ergonomic advantages are obvious, as you have noted. If you have the space, including convenient landing areas, go for it!

antss, I have nine feet that will also have a 30" ref. column and a 18" freezer column. Do you think that is enough space to make it look ok?
guadalupe, I already have the Miele single oven. Sure wish I would have thought about the side-by-side ovens earlier and I may have chose a different option.
skwid, so glas you like your ovens. Would you mind telling me how high from the floor the tops of your ovens are? (Also, how tall is your wife?) That is exactly why I was thinking side by side - convenience in my "old age". LOL.

ellene613, as I stated to antss above, I have 9 feet so am wondering if that is enough to look ok...I have convenient landing places behind me.

I realize this is an old thread, but I have a similar situation. I'm in the process of planning my kitchen reno. I will have a bosch speed oven and 30" benchmark wall oven with side hinge. I am only 5' and I'm turning 60. Originally I was planning on stacking the ovens, but putting the speed oven below the side hinge oven, since the speed oven door opens down. Then I was thinking of placing the ovens side by side. The KD has the stacked ovens, CD FD ref and pantry on the same wall. Nothing is finalized yet.
If you put your two ovens side by side, are you glad you did? Any other ideas?
All feedback is greatly appreciated.

KD has done you no favors, but not because the ovens are stacked - you have zero "landing space" for anything on that wall.

That said, I'd personally love to have side-by-side ovens because I love how they look, but I don't know that I'd do it except under counter (and that would defeat the purpose of making them easy-access).

Can you possibly post a layout of your kitchen on graph paper with dimensions. I think you'll get a lot of feedback from the design gurus on this forum (the overhead makes me dizzy LOL)
