Thermostat Temp

I have a G20 Travel Van that blew a rad hose awhile back. While replacing the hoses I thought it would be a good idea to instal a new thermostat. As the van is only used during the warm summer months I installed a 180 degree rather than the 195 that I was replacing. I'm now wondering if this will affect engine performance. It runs fine although much cooler now but will running this cool a thermostat cause performance issues? Just curious. Thanks

One of the products of combustion is water vapor, and some water vapor gets past the piston rings and into the motor oil, in the normal course of events. When a vehicle is started up and driven for an hour or more, the oil heats up, and the water evaporates. By installing a 180 degree thermostat, you have caused the engine to run cooler, and this will result in more water accumulating in your oil, if you do mainly short trips. If you ordinarily drive the vehicle for an hour or more, per trip, then there will be time for the water to evaporate, so there will be no problem.

Nope. That's plenty warm enough for the engine management system to go into closed loop. The thing to remember about thermostats is they only set a minimum temperature. They do nothing to restrict how high the temperature can go. Whether its a 160* or a 195*, once it's fully open, that's all it can do. The maximum temp is to the rest of the cooling system. In other words, if your engine had a funtioning 195* thermostat and the engine temp always goes to 230*+, putting in a 180* or 160* stat wouldn't prevent that from happening. Might take it a little longer to get there, but it won't stop it. You'd have other issues. If you put in a 180* stat and it's holding at 180* on a warm day, you've got a pretty darn good cooling system. There is no advantage to going from a 195* if that was stock to a 180* stat. Does no harm either. jmo

I never shuts down with temp setting at all ( both fan and outdoor unit) . " It never shuts off or indoor blower stops with outdoor unit still running, then you do need a new stat." One person on another forum suggested disconnecting the green thermostat wire . He told me that the control board was bad if it still ran . I tried that and it did still run. A thermostat is inexpensive and easy to get but I would like get it right the first time . Could ou please expand on this some more . Thanks

Regarding not reaching 70, I assume that the average temperature dropped in the house due to in=and-out activity that might also tend to distribute the mass of cold air from our less insulated rear porch. The next scheduled event is back down to 62 at 8:00 a.m. I couldn't find the American Standard install manual online, but the same thermostat is available from Trane. I have excerpted what I think are the relevant controls to play with. I did look at these once, but was frankly too put off by all the double negatives such as, "disables the 10 minute inhibit" and "Heating Aggressive Recovery can only be enabled if Aggressive Recovery is disabled." I'll be back home in two weeks and I can try to adjust these. Naturally, I will ask for advice here on anything I'm unsure of. Aggressive Recovery: This option disables the 10 minute inhibit anytime the thermostat sees more than a 2° change (such as moving from one program time frame to another). This applies to heating & cooling modes. Heating Aggressive Recovery: This option disables the 10 minute inhibit based on outdoor temperature in heating mode only. The value for outdoor temperature can be set from 0°��"70°. Heating Aggressive Recovery can only be enabled if Aggressive Recovery is disabled.There is a 10 minute “inhibit” period between first and second stage compressor as well as compressor heating & supplemental strip heat. This 10 minute inhibit period minimizes the cycling of higher capacity request due to drafts around the thermostat or marginal load conditions. Cycle Rate The cycle rate affects the cycle time of the system. With a 50% load value, a cycle rate of 3 will allow the system to run for 10 minutes and be off for 10 minutes; completing 3 cycles in one hour. A cycle rate of 5 would allow the system to cycle on and off at 6 minute intervals. The higher the cycle rate, the more often the system turns on and off. The actual amount of time the system will be “on” or “off” will be reflective in the load value of the home. Higher load value demands will increase system run time and decrease system off time. Lower load value demands will decrease system run time and increase system off time.Emergency HeatThe heat pump will be disabled and the furnace / heat strips are enabled any time the thermostat is set to Emergency Heat. Lockouts System lockouts will disable a certain function of the system under specific outdoor temperatures:Compressor Heating Lockout • ��" will lockout all compressor operation below a set outdoor temperature (from 5°��"70°). This value must be set lower than the auxiliary heat lockout. Auxiliary Heating Lockout • ��" will lock out auxiliary heat stages above a set outdoor temperature (from 40°��"70°). This value must be set higher than the compressor heating lockout. Defrost Heater Balance Point • for W1, W2 & W3 ��" will lock out specific auxiliary heat stages when above a set outdoor temperature. (W1 setpoint is from 40°��"55°, W2 & W3 setpoints are from 5°��"55°). This feature does not apply to dual fuel systems. Compressor Cooling First Stage Lockout • ��" will lock out the first stage compressor above a set outdoor temperature. (from 80°��"120°) Compressor Heating First Stage Lockout • ��" will lock out the first stage compressor below a set outdoor temperature. (from 0°��"50°) Furnace First Stage Heating Lockout • ��" will lock out first stage furnace operation below a set outdoor temperature. (from 15°��"50°) First stage lockouts are not available with zoning. Setpoint Dead Band This sets the temperature band between heating and cooling setpoints while in the auto mode. Thanks Racket. The heater has sprung back to life. I disconnected and sprayed WD40 into the connectors to the control display board and the blue spark ignitor wire and she's working again. thanks for the help. regards

One thing you have to ask yourself. Why would General Motors spend millions of dollars testing engines and then deciding to use a 195 degree thermostat rather than 180 degree thermostat. Do you figure they had a reason to do so? If your vehicle is a computer controlled engine the reason may be so it can get hot enough to go into closed loop. And let the computer control the fuel management system. I have seen units where the thermostat is stuck open just a little. And it would take for ever to go into closed loop. And after being in closed loop for a short period of time it would fall back into open loop because it was running too cool. Just food for thought.

Raising the coolant temperature from 180 F to 195 F reduces emissios and inceases engine efficiency. However, I suspect that lubricity is better at 180 F with longer engine life. There is an argument that engine life may not be extended since the higher temperature tends to keep more moisture and condensates out of the oil.

The engine may not pass emissions tests when the coolant is too low.

Regarding the oxygen sensor, most systems go into "closed loop" operation around coolant temp of 140 F, therefore, the oxygen sensor function should be operable at 180 F. Some systems may set a trouble code for "temperature too low". Some emission test stations scans the engine controller for certain trouble codes.

This is a good info. I didn't know higher engine temp improves efficiency. I recently had my thermostat changed, and the first thing I noticed was the engine seems to heat-up much quicker (judging from the temp guage on the dash). I'm not sure what size thermostat he installed.

Thanks a lot for the response to my question fellas. A few varying opinions and good information that have improved my knowledge and changed my thoughts on running a much cooler thermo. Think I'll reinstall the 195 in the spring.
