viking 1200 cfm range hood

Does anyone have any experience with this hood? I am installing it now and I knew about the 10 inch duct which is fine, but no one told me I needed 24 inches between the top of the hood and the bottom of the first 90 degree turn. This would require my ceiling height to be at least 10 feet high. This does not seem to be common in any house I have ever been in. Is this hood strictly for industrial purposes? No where in any documentation does it warn about having a 10 foot minimum ceiling height. Any info would help. Thanks.

The 24 inch distant is standard in exhaust gas vent line like in natural gas water heaters. Think a natural gas central heat furnace also. In these 2 cases there is no fan to move the exhaust this allows it to develop a bit of a velocity to carry it outside. I do not understand why this standard would be in a 1200 cfm fan system. They are probably following natural gas exhaust rules to avoid any conflict with a cityÂs rules in the install of their hood systems (since itÂs an exhaust gas). More or less calling for higher standards that what is actually needed but if they say thatÂs how to install it thatÂs how it has to be done to follow code.

If your entire hood starts to rumble, it is likely that the hood is vibrating at a resonance frequency. Check to see if the motor mounts are loose, otherwise you could have a bad blower shaft bearing that is allowing the motor to vibrate at a resonance at low speeds. Well, "any" is potentially a very small amount, and I'm sure that there is some slight amount. My attic, however, is vented all around the periphery, at the ridge, and also with an attic fan housing. Ice dams at the roof edges tend to occur when the outside air warms up during the day and heats the snow bottom up through the vents instead of top down. In my present half-completed configuration, the ~ 2 x 2 ft heat exchanger sits above a Cooley and Hart 3 x 3 diffuser in a hall ceiling. There is a furnace filter taped down on top of the heat exchanger. This style of filter (Honeywell Filtrete) needs significant pressure drop to move much air through it, and I was pleased to observe that warm air doesn't seem to rise through it in the winter, or hot attic air settle through it in the summer. The sides of the heat exchanger and its plumbing are buried in insulation. When kitchen fans are running and the house is closed up, air is pulled through and the thermostats, the larger-than-typical-size Taco pump, and the furnace controls do their thing to heat the air. (The circuit is capable of well over 100k BTU/hr depending on furnace and air temperature.) The problem, as I have pointed out a few times here, is that pulling air through a filter and heat exchanger requires a pressure drop -- a drop too large for combustion appliance safety. My only combustion appliance is an oil furnace, and it now uses its own MUA system to avoid back-drafting. Nevertheless, if I were to run both kitchen fans at once at full power expecting all flow to be made up through the heat exchanger without fan boost (possibly 1400 actual cfm with restricted MUA), the pressure drop in the house causes some furnace exhaust to be pulled into the house via tiny cracks not normally relevant when there is a positive draft, so I don't do dat without an opened window. My intention is to duct the heat exchanger to a mushroom air intake already installed on my roof via an axial in-line fan and a four-inch pleated filter caddy so that at the maximum possible flow rate (possibly 2000 cfm, say) the house pressure can be balanced and all the MUA comes from outside without mingling with the attic air. A damper may be needed, although as noted, the Filtrete coating will be pretty resistant to air passage without some deliberate pressure drop from the in-line fan. kas

Think of it as a shiny tile backsplash with poor vertical alignment. :) There are some pre-patterned stainless steels that can look fairly pretty. Just keep the angle of tilt-out (from vertical) shallow enough that a rising expanding plume that hits it is still reflected upward. Three inches of tilt over 32 inches (less if the range has its own backspash) is easily sufficiently shallow in angle. Even a less observable short metal piece close to the hood could be built and be 30 degrees or less from vertical. In any case, a serious gas range needs some consideration of what the wall behind it is made of, and I'd start with 5/8 firecode sheetrock (or stone or brick) covered by something fire resistant, such as metal or tile. Assume a raging grease fire in your planning, because that is what the range manufacturer did to comply with UL and to specify offset distances to combustibles, and what the hood manufacturer did to comply with the hood filters performing their fire blocking function. kas

@sarah hossain: I think furnaces are generally not designed for the MUA task. Adapting the MUA to the furnace would need to be well thought out with both flow rate, pressure loss, and heating analysis. Maybe the $$$ is related to all that they would have to do to make it work. I think your mud room plan is a good approach. Whether passive or active (with blower) depends on whether the combustion appliances have their own MUA. By "own" I mean that their air source is not also connected to the kitchen. Either deliberate MUA is brought to the appliance (may be passive but must be sealed), or to the utility room and the utility room closed off from the kitchen, air flow wise. Passive or active, you will need heating in Minnesota. I think if you can go passive I would get a Fantech or similar without a blower but with a heater Is Your hood 600 CFM rated? If so, the actual flow may be only 400 CFM. In either case, the heating has to have the capability of the chart I provided for your temperature extremes. If the MUA system is in the garage, it must be ducted to the roof or somewhere well away from any automotive exhaust. It also should take air up wind of the hood exhaust and any chimney effluent. I believe I have read here that Fantech uses hood blower current as an estimate of air flow rate and runs their MUA blower accordingly. They may have other schemes. With additional exhaust fans (5 x 80 CFM maybe), you can compete with the hood. So if appliance MUA is difficult, then you may need pressure sensing in the house to control the kitchen MUA so the appliances don't back-draft. There was another supplier of MUA mentioned here that showed a design (mounted in the attic in their illustration) that was based on pressure sensing, but I can't presently find a link or paper in my data. I will add that if the existing auxiliary blowers are not back-drafting the appliances, then it may be simplest and still safe to use the Fantech and scale it to just deal with just your hood.

The first time I spoke with Viking about this they said I needed the 24 inches and it was documented. After I questioned them a little further they basically took it back and then said that they have found the 24 inches to be necessary but it was totally up to me. I think it is poor that they have not informed their customers that for their product to work effectively the 24 inches is needed. Plus the 10 inch duct makes this hood not really usable by the average home owner if they want to install it correctly. Venting up through the second story and then through the attic is not an option. Also, just try knocking a 10 inch hole in you wall and see what happens to the joists above.

I spoke with Independent about this and they told me if I installed one of their hoods that required a 10" duct and I had a 90 deg turn very close to the hood... it would not work and would be very, very noisy, and that they basically guaranteed I would NOT be happy with it.

In the end I chose a Wolf Pro Island hood and am running it straight up through the upstairs bedroom through the attic to a rooftop blower.

I would follow Viking's recommendation or don't do it at all because I do not think you will be happy with the performance or the noise.

We have the Viking 1200cfm hood (with external fan motor). ours is installed with the 10" 90 degree elbow mounted right to the hood. The duct work goes through the exterior wall inside the 12" high cabinet that is above the hood. I my opinion it works just fine and the noise level is rather low. Even on the highest setting the noise is still no more than the fan on our old over the range microwave fan (though this could be due to the external motor).

For what it is worth ours was installed by Viking factory trained installers and is covered under warranty. I never noticed any stipulation about the 24" height requirement. Since I purchased all the appliances and coordinated the installation I read all of the manuals and never saw that.

OK, that is good to hear. Because we could not cut a hole below the joist we have decided to have some custom ducting made. Instead of using the 18x5 rectangular to 10 inch round transition piece and the 10 inch elbow we have decided to make a 18x5 rectangular elbow and save about 6 inches in height. Then we will use a steel lintle above this gaping hole and a custom damper on the outside of the house. I just hope we have the same results as ken after doing all this extra work.....

Are you using an external 1200 cfm blower? Was their reasoning that there is turbulence casued at the elbow in the vacuum that impacts the hood performance, in which they prefer to have 2 feet of straight duct to even out the air flow before the hood? If you are using an internal blower, I can't see why it would matter, unless the close elbow causes more noise with the blower hitting the elbow with air.

I called Viking today and the person I talked to said that there isn't any 24" straight run restriction for the venting, the only restriction is that it needs a 10" duct.
