I was on the Blue Oval Forum and came across this little ditty.

Opinions?

---The Idea behind the current crop of Hybrid cars is well known; the cars main energy comes from gasoline which recharges batteries that move the car at low speeds. Hydraulic Hybrids work in the same manner, only instead of batteries, excess energy is stored in hydraulic cylinders.That in itself is not revolutionary, except for the fact that Nickel Metal Hydride batteries used today are not an efficient way to store energy, and hydraulic storage blows them away with 3X the efficiency. Even next generation Lithium Ion batteries do not come close to Hydraulic Energy Storage.

---The standard F-150 has a curb weight of about 4800 lbs., which is 65% greater than theToyota Prius, yet incredibly the Hydraulic F-150 with a continuously variable transmission matches the Prius with 60mpg city rating, thatÂs an amazing 400% increase over its gasoline version.

---The F-150 makes for a perfect host for Hydraulic Hybrid technology because of its height and body on frame construction, adding this system to smaller vehicles will be challenging, but with those kind of numbers small vehicles as we know them may become obsolete...The Hydraulic F-150 is currently scheduled for launch in August of 2008, can Ford work out all the bugs by then? Opinions?

- There's more to an engine than good mileage. There still are a few people buying F-150s because they need something that can haul a lot. There's no information here on towing capacity or payload. A "Hydraulic Hybrid" F-150 is a non-starter if it can't haul close to the 1800 pounds or tow the 6500 pounds the current model can.
-Given that this technology does its best in stop-and-go conditions, will this engine sell in the more rural areas in which pickups are bigger sellers but where stop-and-go is not the majority part of the program?
- It's pretty well-known that most hybrid drivers are not getting the high mileage on the EPA sticker. I would be highly suspicious that a heavy, relatively unaerodynamic vehicle like an F-150 would match even the Prius' real mileage, nevermind the fun number on the sticker.
- The F-150 is one of the few bright spots in the Ford lineup right now. To some degree, it makes sense for them to try to make their most attractive vehicle more attractive. OTOH, do they want to bet big on the one vehicle they can count on?
- August '08 is two years away. That's not a lot of time to complete extreme-weather testing, EPA certification, etc., and get vehicles to market. Especially for a company that cannot afford to screw this up and which has not had the reputation for quality they used to have.

It's a tall order. I certainly hope Ford is successful with it. But I think this article is extraordinarily optimistic about this engine being a savior for Ford.

If this was true, then someone(VW or Nissan or Honda or GM) would sell a normal sized vehicle to go 75 MPG....or more..
5 years ago my VW pickup averaged 45 mpg, just by trimming away excessive and wasted size and performance..and of course using the Diesel, an old design yet...
I do not know about the hydraulic technology, but wild claims about high MPG do abound...

I only had room to lay it on its side at about a 30ÃÂº angle from horizontal, with the top of the tree pointing towards the rear. I was concerned that a tarp flapping in the wind would cause more damage than with it off so I made the trip without a tarp. I tied some padding around the soil to hold it in. There were still a few leaves on the tree when I arrived and I saw no evidence of any damage to the tips of the branches. My speed was no faster than 55 mph and probably averaged about 45. I can only hope that there is no unseen damage but I should know in the spring if there was. Thanks for your opinion everyone.

Hey, you can't have all of this fun without me!! VBG Seriously some of what is being said about piston slap is true. Piston slap alone is NOT a reason to tear an engine down and do a repair. Piston slap is in fact normal on a cold engine because aluminum expands faster than the cast iron engine block. if the piston is tight enough cold, it will be too tight when warmed up. Piston slap should a repair actually be indicated actually does not even mean that a piston needs to be replaced! If the problem is a collapsed skirt, it can in many cases be "knurled" and reshaped to take up the slightly excessive clearance. A knurled piston is one that has many tiny marks made into it's surface, that cause the outer edges of the mark to rise up. Sort of like the way a center punch makes a "crater" in a piece of metal. I do understand the perception that to the right person pulling and reinstalling a piston isn't difficult to do but the reality is to do it right is in fact much different. This is a job where a very simple mistake can cause a major engine failure after the attempt. Plus if it's 4WD just getting the oil pan off and back on will take up most of your staurday, and that's if you have a hoist. People have been successful simply replacing a piston(s) in chassis but not always successful at eliminating piston noise or slap. That's because the piston is only half of the equation, cylinder wear or taper could easily be coming into play, and I would leave those checks/measurements up to a qualified machinist. Plus we still have the little issue of pressing the piston pin through the rod. Very few shops have the equipment to do that, let alone DIY's. There are many traps lurking in this repair that can make the whole attempt go south in a hurry. One common trap is as simple as not torquing the intake manifold in the correct order! An incorrect torque sequence distorts the engine block, and that changes the line bore of the engine resulting in main bearing/camshaft bearing wear. The $64,000 question from there is, does the resulting wear end up causing the engine to actually fail? Sometimes it does, and sometimes it does not. Lastly, stroke length plays a role in piston slap issues. The longer the stroke, the more often a piston skirt has to be shortened for clearance issues. Cylinder block deck height and other design issues can also impact piston design. The longer that the skirts can be, the less likely it is that piston slap is likely to occur. Although think about it, the longer the skirts, the greater the piston mass and you start impacting engine efficiency due to inertial, and frictional losses. Plus you can impact RPM and horsepower. It's all an intricate dance that even the manufactures are not going to be perfect at every time. That's why we have tolerances, and some things (noises) are allowable even if they are not completely desireable.

Hmmm! You guys have some good points. I never thunk about that 2 cord weight. But then I don't know a Commanche P/U from an anchor chain. I found the following in Mark's Mechanical Engineers Handbook, 1952, (1 $/pound new). A cord =(128 ftÂ³ cut & stacked) = 90ftÂ³ solid wood. White Pine, Green, 3240lbs, 12% moisture, 2250 lbs Red Oak, Green, 5760lbs, 12% moisture, 3960 lbs so 2 cords could weigh up to 11,520 lbs. Wow! Assuming a P/U bed 6' X 8' the load would be 5.3 ft high loaded even along its length which would make it too heavy on the drivers so you'd have to pile it higher toward the front..... Wow Again! =========================================================================== I hauled dry cedar logs never over a ton net which gave me a GVW of about 4500 lbs. Legal! I checked weighed it once to calibrate my eyeballs for loading in the woods. I also divided the gross weight by 4 (=1125 lbs) and my tires were rated for 1500 lbs so the cops wouldn't gitme for an overload. The beefed up springs proved to be extremely stable. The logs were tied down 2 places with truckers rope and since I are a trucker I know how to do a secure tie down. The brakes were more than adequate for this GVW because I tested em out with a simulated panic stop to make sure. At the time I was given to understand that the Datsoon rear axle bearings were sized for way more than the load I put on em. Don't remember anymore how that was determined but it was considered. I did this in the California mountains with no trouble aytall. I geared down going downhill thereby keeping my brakes cool. etc etc. Did I do it right? Altho many big trucks use airbag suspensions I don't believe air shocks would be reliable for this application unless they were mounted directly between the axle and the frame. Most are mounted to welded-on struts which can bust off. They can leak or spring a leak. They have no lateral stability. Coil springs have no lateral stability. Leaf springs are better. Thick stiff ones are best.

i dont care how many miles per gal. it gets, i dont want to drive a full size pickup. now if ford can get their miata to get over 90 mpg, then i`am interested.

Hydraulic fluid is incompressible. It can not be used to store energy. To store energy you need a fluid that can be compressed, like air. There could be some sort of hydraulic drive component to the system, but the method for storing energy must be something else.

Not as far fetched as you think. Same kind of idea is used on some man lift equipment used by utilities...not to drive the truck down the road, but to raise the boom smoothly. Has been used sinse the 60's. The energy is stored in an accumulator. The accumulator has an area filled with some kind of inert gas. That gas is what can be compressed against the fluid, thus storing engergy. From what I've heard on the subject, on a vehicle it would only work in stop and go driving situations. If that's the case, your 60 mpg pickup would still only get 17 driving down the road. The increase in mileage would come from around town driving...like a UPS truck or mail delivery vehicle. jmo

If comparable in price and capabilities and was a solid 60 MPG, not some inaccurate EPA estimate.... (The window sticker would have to read something like 75/100) then I would get one. If ford is reading this, now they know what they have to do to reclaim a loyal Toyota driver. IF only 60 in stop & go conditions, that isn't going to cut it.

I just read where UPS is going to use this technology in it's new trucks. Lot of weight there, so the hauling ability questions can soon be answered. I agree, I too need a vehicle that can haul a cargo trailer all over the northeast and a Prius just won't do.

Most of the gas usage in the larger vehicles is spent pulling away from stop. After they are up to speed, it's "rolling weight" so that figure HAS to increase also. So even if the truck gets, say, 30 MPG on the highway, that's 100% better than now since my Dakota only gets 15.

The engine type (gas or diesel) is immaterial since in place of an electric motor there will be a hydraulic motor. And yes, it will at this time be best suited for stop and go use, but the potential is there for OTR use also.

But can you imagine the effects of a taxi fleet using this technology? If taxi fleets in the major cities were to be able to convert, the fuel savings would be enormous! And since UPS is going this route, if more companies were to convert it's "six wheelers", again, more fuel savings and less dependence. And no need to replace expensive batteries!

Do a Google for Hydraulic hybrids and see what comes up. Even the EPA is backing this as a way to save fuel.
