Yard Man deck belt smoking
Comments (10)jim_w_ny, having gone back and read your thread from last year (when you posted about how your Yard bug had taken up smoking), and your posts to date, I believe you are ill equipped to undertake a project requiring so much equipment and facility as this. You might disagree with my assessment, but, I think you would probably be better off to spend your money having a professional perform the work than to spend money buying a hoist or a come-along or a floor jack in order to perform the work yourself. There are situations and circumstances where a person might "DIY" some things and there are situations and circumstances where a person should not "try this at home". I feel that the particular situation and circumstances here indicate that "you should not try this at home". If you feel compelled to forge ahead yourself, consider this post as a reminder to be doubly cautious about everything you do....See MoreMTD Belt problems
Comments (2)Do you have the belts routed properly? The belt from variator to Rear axle goes on top; the variator to engine goes below. Are you using OEM belts? The MTD variator design is pretty sensitive to aftermarket belts. Clutching and launches are affected. Lastly, you mention a spring loaded belt. The only spring loaded one I'm aware of is the idler between the variator and the rear axle. It keeps that belt constantly tensioned. The other idler between variator and engine functions as a clutch and is controlled by footpedal....See MoreChanging the drive belt on J.Deere 48' Edge mower deck
Comments (1)Check out the attachment. Page 7, step 8 says you have to use a 15mm socket to move the idler sheave and tensioning arm toward the front of the tractor (there is a picture). This should relieve the tension on the belt. Here is a link that might be useful: Link...See MoreToro 14-38 HXL new belt - poor tension
Comments (17)"Does the engagement lever itself feel secure in the tower?" There was a reason that question was asked. I'm referring to the engagement arm and how it is supported. On a 97 model, I seem to rememeber still had each end of the rod mounted on a rubber block rather than mounted through the plastic tower w/ a nut on each side. The new style tower i think got rid of the tilt steering feature too. The rubber mounted ones would pull out if they had too much tension on them- IE from the too small belt previously installed. By this time you also have notable wear in the arm and fastener on the top of the deck. That may contribute some as well. If you remove one of the fuel tank bracket nuts and swing it out of the way- the fuel tank will lift up so you can have a look at the control and cable. If the control rod slipped off of the tower, call 18003482424 and see if they will send you an updated tower....See Moremileena3
