I hate my new Honda HRR216VXA
Comments (31)I just replaced my 14 year old John Deere with this model. This was my first self propelled mower. I have a small almost flat lawn so I didn't really think I needed the self propelled feature. I've only used it once but after mowing the front lawn I was fighting the mower. Seemed like it was more work than the old mower. I don't mow in circles so in some areas the distance I mow ranges from 50' to as little as 5' so there is a lot of turning around or pulling the mower backwards. The back yard went much easier as it is basicly just a big oval. I think with time I will get used to the mower and it will be fine. It is a little hard to match speed to your pace. It goes from too slow to too fast very quickly but I think I will like it as I get used to it. Adjusting speed without having to reach for a lever seems like a good idea to me but like I said I have never used a self propelled model before. I also looked at the next model up with the plastic deck. This appealed to me because the reason I replaced the John Deere was the deck corroded through. I always cleaned under the deck after mowing like the manual said but it started to corrode the 2nd year I had it. I was surprised it lasted as long as it did. I also liked the the way you can split between mulching and bagging but three things killed the mower for me. 1. The handle was to ackward to fold compared to this model. 2. It was much longer which would make it difficult to handle around the walls and raised beds in my yard. 3. Price. $200.00 more. I think that if people take the time to get used to the controls this will turn out to be a good mower. Some have complained about no liner in the cylinder and the lack of pressure feed lubrication, but what good is designing an engine that will last 30 years if the rest of the mower is dead in 10?...See MoreToro personal pace grinding noise?
Comments (45)Ok folks here it goes. Although there are many things that can cause a Toro personal pace to make all kinds of noises I would like to let you know how to fix at least one issue. After excluding wheel grinding noises and adjustment issues here is an easy fix to the transmission grinding noise. This noise can occur even with good gears and no gear slippage. The problem is that Toro has not chosen to fix a tolerance problem in the transmission casting or case itself. Now make a mental picture of what I am about to say or be staring down inside the transmission housing and gears by removing the axle and transmission unit. The bearing sits in the bottom of the transmission housing then the pinion gear stem fits down through it to the pulley system. The pinion gear then engages the bevel gear on the axel. Now here is the problem; the bearing when sitting in the bottom of the case allows just enough disengagement to create a grinding or howling noise. You may think my solution is quirky but it darn sure has worked. I took a wrench socket and knocked the bearing away from the floor of the transmission case a bit. I then took a piece of baling wire shaped like a washer and worked it between this created space between the floor of the case and the lower or bottom side of the bearing. This moves the pinion gear and the beveled gear to exactly to the correct tolerances. Hence, no more grinding noise. I have a 2005 Personal Pace mower that is actually quieter than when it was new....See Moresnow throwing
Comments (15)You may want to try adding an impeller kit to improve throwing performance. My Ariens 1995 8\24 always had problems with clogging, especially at the end of the driveway. I installed an Impeller Kit purchased from Canada and I am very pleased with my purchase. No more clogs and I see a good 30% improvement in throwing distance. The kit did require me purchasing a long 3/16" drill and I had to remove the chute to drill into the impeller to install the paddles. Here is a link from where I bought it. http://smllengns.tripod.com/ You may also want to do a review search by googling keyword of "review Clarence Impeller kit". I in no way have any ties with the company, I merely am stating my personal experience with the product....See MoreRegrets / pet peeves about your tractor purchase ?
Comments (14)The OP is correct regarding tractor enthusiasts. Forums like this are a great tool in learning how things work in the real world. There are good dealers in the world that won't just encourage you to by a certain tractor or deck because it is the one he has in stock. It would be naive to think you can always count on the local dealer being that guy. Larger decks are the ones that knock a lot of grass down at once, but many times have their limitations. Sometimes it is best to step up and get a commercial unit if that is main objective and budget allows. I have 2 customers w/ Cub Cadet 50" decks that bag. 1 loves the way it bags , the other can't stand theirs. So I guess people's opinions are really just that. I used to sell Toro tractors in another life. The 48 did fine. Liked the 52" recycler better than just about anything for a large, good cutting tractor deck- either recycling or discharging. Unusual for a 3 blade to do everything well. The 44" 3 blade was an example of a deck that had lots more QOC issues. In my opinion, the blades and cutting chamber were too small to recycle effectively. You couldn't easily go from one mode to the other easily either....See Moretakedown
