Good question. I assume you're talking about mounting them vertically?

The "tempered" pretty much makes them uncuttable.

The weight could be an issue. They'd need to be supported while the adhesive cured.

Bill would have better knowledge regarding adhesives. Glass that large. it's often better to install it in a flexible setting, as any glass movement could break the adhesive bond.

I really don't think you should take the deal--way too risky to mount. Just let me know whom to contact and I'll make them go away :)

Vertical mounting was the original idea, but as the concept has morphed, I'm thinking it might work in interesting ways as a horizontal surface on counter pass through or on window sills? I haven't seen the tile in person yet, but in the picture has a distinctly blue/green glass hue. So, not sure that that color is what I would want for those specific spaces. Still playing in my head, but asking the experts on the practical aspects of actually using it.

I wonder if could be walked upon. I am imagining an elevated pathway of steel or wood with clean glass tiles :) Somewhat like the glass staircase at the Apple store.

Funny you should say that. The archive library at the Maine Historical Society where I just spent the last two months working, had elevated floors just like that-- 1 1/2" thick tempered glass tiles, 18x18, set onto steel framing with urethane caulking. VERY solid.

It probably was intended as glass flooring. He uses a lot of glass and "glass rooms" in unconventional ways.

I met him years ago in Colorado. I had overseen a construction project for a semi-friend out in Eagle. Koolhaas came to the house warming party. We talked a little design versus construction. I didn't know who he was when we were introduced.

But he did tick off my wife, she got the last of a certain wine they were serving and that he preferred, when he was told she got the last of the wine, he took my wife's wine glass out of her hand and walked off with it, spilling wine on her in the process. He thought it was cute, my wife was really ticked off.

Met again about 8 months later at the same friend's house just outside of Boston. My friend is a money man, Koolhaas was planning an "island project" of some sort in Dubai. He thought he'd make amends, so he brought a bottle of the same wine as a gift for my wife.

My wife brought a case of the same wine for him. Touche!

Why not stay true to form and make an elevated glass cube shower, lit from beneath, from around the sides, and the from the top as well?

I want to learn more about glass that can be walked upon, such as the one in grand canyon or the apple store. Laminated + tempered + edge protected + wear layer + ??

Transparent glass floors are usually large glass tiles (laminated and tempered) that are set into a metal grid. A silicon cushioning strip is set on the grid to cushion the glass. Depending on the system, the tiles are surrounded with a silicon strip built into the grid, or they are "grouted" with a silicon caulk.

For large glass set directly onto a floor, it's usually set on a cushioning silicon mat. I suppose there are situations where a rigid bonding adhesive could be used (like a thinset) but the ones I've seen are flexible in nature.

There's some really cool glass stuff going on out there. My wife and I were in a a bar in Barcelona that a lot of glass detailing: it had "lava lamp" type of flooring, bar countertop, and tables. Seemed to be two sheets of glass, gapped maybe 1/4" or so, with the liquid between the two sheets being just like a lava lamp. You press on the glass table or bar top, or press on the floor with foot pressure, and the liquid swirled around between the two sheets of glass. It was all backlit, very shimmery. Really cool. Not a good place to walk around when you're a little tipsy.

They had glass stair treads which I thought were dangerous. We were there for a while and several people stumbled on the stairs. Didn't seem to be the alcohol. More of a depth perception problem.

What a fun thread--glad I posted. I am sure this was either left overs or rejected samples for flooring. I will let you know if and when I know more. I'd love to use it in a shower. but... my plan for my reno of very small bathroom is to put in a claw foot tub but the lighting comes in in two ways. One is a light in the wall behind the tub to shine on the floor and hopefully make the tub "float" and the other is a ceiling structure slightly dropped from the very tall real ceiling which holds a recessed track for shower curtain and a recessed can
for light. Not sure yet whether there will also be light between the anticipated drop and the real ceiling (depends on what ends up happening with a vent that is there now).

Perhaps not quite the Bling of Pharoh's bath but pretty cool in my mind at least.

If I use the glass on a counter, it will be lighted underneath!

I love the recessed track curtain and glass drop ceiling idea...not sure the light behind the tub would be enough to create the floating effect unless seen from almost floor-level...?
