Kitchen Aid gas cooktop - can't simmer

Perhaps someone else has the same issue and a bit of sage advice.

The removation from hell is almost over, and thus the new propane Kitchen Aid five burner gas cooktop is in and "functioning". We are very happy with the high heat capabilities of the top, but adjustability to low is virtually non-existant.

I tried to tweak the adjusting screws down, but they were already at their lowest settings.

Low flame does not exist in the sense that all burners will not go below, say, a 1/2" to 3/4" flame. This is useless for something like bacon this AM, or the rice last night, much less for the things we need the cooktop for. We were far better off with the old crappy electric top.

While most non-pro-style cooktops don't have the amazing simmer capabilities that you can get on a pro-style range, I'm really surprised that you can't get the flame low enough to cook bacon or rice. Are you sure you did the adjusting correctly? Are you sure the cooktop is properly adjusted for propane and not natural gas? Maybe you should have a technician come and check it out.

One thing you can do is get a simmer plate or diffuser (I think that's what they're called). They're usually used for simmering things but should work in general to lower the heat. Again, I'm really surprised that you'd need one to cook bacon or rice.

While people have complained a lot about KA ovens, this is the first complaint I've heard about their cooktops.

I am considering purchasing a KitchenAid 36" 6 burner professional stainless steel cooktop (Model No. KGCP467JSS) and would like any advice on this. It is within my price range and has the appearance on a good quality range top without the high price of the high-end brands. I read one review on this cooktop on another site and the owner complained that the stainless steel backguard got really stained and ruined within the first month on using the cooktop. What exactly IS the problem? Is the heat too low, too high, the flame ring not continuous? Is simmer not working on all the burners, are you correctly engaging the simmer portion of the control knob?

Sorry, my computer has been in the shop. I bought the unit at Sears, but they are relying on the repairman notes and they said exactly the same thing as kitchenaid (I believe they turn the repair/replacement back on ka.) Thanks aliceinwonderland about the credit card point. If necessary I may try that. However with more nagging, ka did ask another repairman to take a look, and he is going to talk to the ka technical side and see what they reccomend. It has been like pulling teeth to get help from the tech side of ka. Alku05: unfortunately, the new design of stoves have no shutters or other air control. I have already had the propane company out to verify that the hookup and gas pressure were correct. podge8: I suppose you might be correct that yellow tips are permissible, but then why do 2 of my burners only have blue flame like my neighbor's hotpoint? And just for future reference, propane burns HOTTER than natural gas. That is the reason that LP stoves require the orifices to be made smaller and line pressure to be reduced. Are other people having installation problems like this with gas cooktop/stoves?

Easy off with gloves will probably work okay, though be aware that lye, the active ingredient, can discolor and dull aluminum and stainless steel and can also make cheaply painted surfaces come off on your scrubber. But if the thing is already covered with goo you probably will improve it with the cleaning. Watch the fumes and wear gloves when working with Easyoff. Just warming the surface up a bit, turning off the heat and then letting the foam sit on the grease for an hour or so will loosen up a lot of cooked-on mess. The lye combines with the fat and makes, ala Fight Club, soap. Follow directions on the can and be sure to test a little on a small area before charging ahead, unless you just don't care, that is, and want it clean no matter what.
