insufficient egr flow

I have a 110k '95 Ford Contour 2.0 4 cyl, and mainly do my posting in www.contour.org, but we seem to be out of ideas over there. I have the check engine code P0332 - Insuffient EGR flow. It just started. Learning of the many problems of this car from the contour.org site, I have done the following soon after buying this car 3 months ago:

new wires/plugs

new timing belt, serp belt

new EGR valve, IAC valve, DPFE sensor

replaced cracked vac lines

cleaned throttle body

cleaned MAF

replaced all filters

The car actually runs great but I would still like this CEL to go away. Since the EGR itself is new and has worked fine for two months before this CEL came on, I doubt that is the problem. The site recommended I clean the TB which I did, as well as the EGR passages behind the TB. I do not know what else to do, but this board has been helpful in the past so I am asking for any further ideas. Thanks all.

OK, what perameters does the system use to determine EGR flow? By looking at freeze frame data, when does the code set, cruise or decel? What is the DPFE voltage KOEO, (key on engine off), KOER (Key on engine running), How much does the DPFE voltage change when vacuum is applied to the EGR opening it fully at idle, that is right up until the car stalls. And lastly how high does the DPFE voltage go when the egr is commanded on fully during light to moderate acceleration? When running the KOER self test, does the EGR code for low flow set?

This is how a tech would approach this issue.

A real technician - a man worthy of 40% to 50% of the flat rate. Todays cars are that complex that maybe half the bill should be the diagnosis...
This is much better than the obsolete prevalent "parts throwing at a problem" of yesterday and still today....Or a visit to AutoZone for a "free" reading of the codes...
I wish someone would paint my roof for free... lol.....

I considered not responding to this thread. What I have to say is not an answer to the question or what the OP wants to hear. Still, he may benefit and other readers can learn from the mistakes made. When building a new home, it's best to complete a grading and drainage plan before starting construction. There is a minor potential for flooding for this lot (flood zone X) that should be assessed and a height of foundation selected to ensure protection. If it was my house the grade at the foundation would be a few inches higher than the highest point in James Drive to the south. With luck, that is the case. When doing grading, it's a good idea to make a base property drawing that documents the grading before construction begins. Drainage law varies from state to state. Most states follow some modified version of the Civil Law of Drainage. It is a violation to block the natural flow of water from a higher property from entering your property, and carries liability for all damage for doing so. In this case, after construction started, water pooled on Lot 7, submerging newly planted trees. Whether the pooling was caused by construction or an insufficient capacity of the county's road ditch may be in question, but without a documentation of the original grades the poster is not in a good position to defend against a claim from the Lot 7 owner. The poster may have to regrade to accommodate the drainage of Lot 7 and pay for the replacement of any of the trees that die. While I think it was right of the county to tell poster to regrade such that Lot 7 drainage was not blocked from getting to the road ditch, I fail to see how the county has authority to require the swale MTguy constructed across his property. Moreover, the swale also violates the Civil Law of Drainage by diverting water to flow onto a lower property (Lot 5) in a place different from historical flows. The lower owner has a legal cause of action that the flows be stopped and all damage be compensated. A consolation with an attorney might be in order. SEED STARTING FOR THE HOME GARDEN I have discovered a cheap, simple method of starting flower and vegetable seeds for the home garden. It utilizes the principle of capillary action and a moist newspaper mat. To construct such a device, the following items will be required: A roller paint tray and plastic liner obtained from the paint department of a box store. 2. A 5-foot length of 1ÃÂ¼ inch PVC pipe obtained from the plumbing department of the same store. This needs to be cut into 25 2-inch cylinders and then filled with a good seed starting mix. 3. A 6-inch piece of I-inch PVC pipe to be used as a plant ejector. 4. A half dozen sheets of newspaper. Lay the newspaper on the sloping part of the paint tray with several inches immersed in the paint holding well. Fill this well with water and watch as the newspaper mat slowly becomes saturated as it draws up water. Plant a few seeds in each mix-filled cylinder and tamp lightly so the bottom of the mix is in contact with the wet newspaper. It will soon start drawing up moisture via capillary action and become damp. Keep adding water to the well as needed. Using short pieces of an old venation blind and a lead pencil, identify each cylinder with name and date of planting. In a week or two, the seeds will germinate and green leaves will appear. When about 2 or 3 inches tall and ready to transplant to a larger container or the garden, use the 1Ã¢ÂÂ ejection tool. Place this over the green leaves of the sprouted seedling. It will telescope nicely into the 1ÃÂ¼Ã¢ÂÂ planted cylinder. Pull up on the planted cylinder and the seedling will be bottom ejected without disturbing the roots. Add fresh planting mix around the new, larger container and place in a bright-lighted window for further development.

I was thinking you had seating in both rooms that might be exchanged. How many max do you want to seat in each room? A good basic start is a 3-seat sofa and 2 armchairs but that really only seats 4 since most will leave an empty seat between them on a 3-seat sofa. Two don't usually sit side by side on a loveseat either. This might be a good area to designate as conversation and dining area for guests while you convert your sitting room to a media room with the TV and sectional for more private family time. Do you want to post pix and the size of that other room? Assume you don't have a separate formal dining room.

I share your concerns about aisle width and fridge placement. I don't see a solution for the fridge location, but I like that it's convenient to the living areas. I would make the cabinetry on the window wall shallower and add those inches to the aisles. You can use standard upper cabinets for the base, with a strip of counter, then add uppers on each end, to flank the windows. I like having the MW closer to the fridge, but if it's a combo, then the wall ovens are better in the spot where you have them drawn. An alternative would be to have a MW drawer on the end of the island, opening toward the fridge--convenient for taking leftovers from the fridge to re-heat, but adding to traffic in the fridge aisle. Re: the breakfast area--you could omit the cabinets on the kitchen window wall and put the slider there (or keep the window/door configuration as is, if it's structurally sound), with a window in the FR/dining nook. Use a bench to make it look more built in/deliberate, and to add some extra storage. Also, without cabinets on the kitchen wall, the island could be made deeper, with an extra run of shallow cabinets. Pull-outs opening to the sides would make access easier for all but the inside cabs. You said you have two young kids, so send them under the seating overhang to retrieve items from those cabinets. ;) Either of the options above keep traffic from moving through the work aisle, but decrease storage and counter space. I don't have a repair manual for your engine. That would be the first step - gaining access to a decent repair manual. You might be able to find some information on-line at your local library if they maintain a subscription to a an auto repair service.

First, determine if the pintle of the ERG can move. Usually, there is a procedure in the repair manual that will exercise the pintle. This will give you a starting point. If the pintle does not move, find out why.

You mentioned that the EGR valve was replaced. Were the exhaust gas passageways checked for blockage when the valve was replaced? Often, these passageways clog and have to be manually cleaned.

Remove and plug the vacuum line to the EGR. Apply a hand vacuum pump to the ERG, pull a vacuum and look for pintle movement. If the pintle moves, then next with the engine running at idle, apply a vacuum and as the pintle opens, the engine may stumble. If the pintle moves and there is no change in engine operation, suspect clogged passageways.

John_G has given the order of diagnostic tests, but you'll have to have the correct instrumnetation to take the readings, and then, intrepret the results. He's making a point that maybe taking the job to a qualified tech is the thing to do, and that the cost is justified if the problem gets fully identified.
