Ford Taurus

Was just looking at the Ford web site. Appears Ford doesn't make the Taurus anymore. Is that right? What's the replacement? Thought the Taurus was one of the most successful cars of all time. Shocks me if they quit making it.

Worm--

I just typed "ford motor company" into my google search and picked the Ford site out of the search results. At the very top of the page is a small window in which I typed "taurus" and hit search. About halfway down the first page of results is a place to order options on your 2006 Taurus. Entering, I was pleased to find that certain options were/weren't available for the 2007 models. I think this means at least a 2007 model, although in light of the fact that Ford was recently passed in sales by Toyota, they might have rethought things. I hope this is not the case, as I have a '94 wagon with nearly 200k. It's a daily driver which gets me something over 25mpg in my 35 mile round trip to work--and this with the air conditioner running. Aside from minor things broken when I bought it six years ago and a radiator replacement (I did find a guarantee from a transmission place indicating serious work had been done, but I haven't had any problems there--knock on wood) I am very happy with the car. If they still have a station wagon available when I finally get a new one, that's where I'll start looking first.

This is a stange and troublesome problem. I wouldn't want it to happen while passing someone on a two lane road, or crossing a busy intersection. I have no clue about this one, but I'll mention a problem from the past. One day, the Cadillac dealers in one area began to receive a rash of calls about the trunk lids popping open of their own accord. This problem was reported only in one area. By observation, it was attributed to military jet fighters on trainning flights flyovers. Apparently, their transmitters were keying the remote system on the autos. The military never admitted to any transmissions and would not disclose the frequencies and modulation they were using. GM fixed the problem by changing the operating frequency and key code pulses. Look around the next time the problem occurs: Are you passing under a power transmission line, near cell phone tower, etc. Is something keying the security system? Do you or anyone in the vehicle with you carry a spare key fob in their pocket, and if so, is there a possibility its panic button is getting inadvertently pressed? Lets us know when you solve it. I'm betting on some electrical/eletronic grelim.

It could be caused by many things. There is not enough information given to narrow it down. It could be: 1. The blend doors not operating properly. 2. Compressor not running. 3. Refrigerant low. I know you said that the Freon was ok, but you did not state how you knew. therefore, I can not be sure this is true. If you want it to work soon, your best bet is to take it to a shop who works on Ford air conditioners.

I can't be sure but it looks identical to the little door on my 1998 Ford Explorer console, passenger side. Mine is a spring-loaded door that opens up to a cigarette lighter type receptable that is used to power portable electronics and such. Just a guess though. Terry

Thanks everyone for your insights. Over the last 29 years, between DH & I, we've had 10 Fords. Every one has lasted 10+ years and the lowest mileage one we had when traded was 135,000. I think this 2002 Taurus is just a "dud" but I've had 3 other Taurus' since 1986 & had excellent records. I had a 1989 Ford Explorer that ran over 200K miles & 13 years. I sold it for $2,000 when I bought the current Taurus and some college kid is probably still delivering pizzas in it! And the love of my life was my 1983 red Thunderbird - DH and I traded it back and forth for 13 years, until our 2nd son was born and the back seat was way too small for 2 car seats. My mechanic gave me a good insight on the "gas guzzler" Crown Vic when I discussed with him what he would buy if he were looking for a used car and had less than $10K to spend. He said he'd go for a full size sedan becuase they still get around 20 mpg, and cost around &8 to $10K. If I kept the car for 6 years, and gas even went back to $4 a gallon, I'd still spend way less total than buying a small car for $14K or more. Plus with 3 unusually tall boys, a small car just won't fit us. He said his top pic for a used sedan would be a Nissan Maxima but it's just not big enough for us. I am very hard on cars - I only live 3 miles from work and most days drive 10 miles or less of 'stop at every corner' type driving. That's really hard on a car, so if my Fords have lasted 135,000 or miles or more, it's like double that in highway miles. I will most likely buy another Ford, mostly because of my good experience up to now, and also because Ford is in better financial condition and will be around to honor any warranty. I know intellectually that I should get rid of this car before it blows, but emotionally I'm just not sure I am ready to spend the $$ on a "new" car. Every time I say I'm going to look at cars, I come up with an excuse not to. I just took 2 weeks off work and had several days with no plans, but never managed to make it to look at cars. I live right in the city & near a major business corridor with 5 or 6 dealerships in a 5 mile stretch, but still can't seem to make it over there!

i thought the fusion was the replacement. by the way the ford dealer up here was selling new 06 tauruses at 10995.00 pretty well loaded up. after seeing how toyota is doing, i would say the taurus replacement is the camry hahahaha

The Taurus is available to fleet operators -- rental-car companies, taxi companies, government car pools, etc. It's not sold to the public through dealers anymore, though if you have a dealership with a fleet-sales rep you might be able to get one.

The replacement is the Fusion. The Five Hundred kinda fits -- sort of -- but really is designed to bring Ford into a new market (sport-utility sedan, if you will).

The Taurus was a great seller when it was introduced, but then Ford decided to make it a "styling exercise" and the public turned away from the all-ovals-all-the-time styling (probably to lose their lunches). By then, quality was no longer Job One at Ford and the car was getting old. It couldn't match the Camry for reliability or the Chrysler equivalents for styling. Time for something new...

I thought the fusion was to replace the Coutour.
I'll take your word for it but due to the available engines, a 2.3 I4 and 3.0 v6, I'd still tend to think contour, price ranges seem to put it at fully loaded contour/ base model taurus. Tough call.
It's placement in the Ford food chain even fits perfectly where countour used to live. Just a guess though.

Steve_o is right, if I recall, although I understood from old Ford press releases that both the Fusion and the Five Hundred were replacements for the Taurus, for different segments of the mid-size market; the idea was to offer more options between the Focus and Crown Vic.

IMHO the size chart should read:
Escort
Focus
Contour
Fusion
Taurus
Five Hundred
Crown Victoria

And you also left out the GT. (new) But so did I.
Problem is escort, Contour and Taurus are no longer in the game. I guess we'll see who buys what and then draw our conclusions.

If you miss the Tarurus.Consider a Buick LaCross they look a lot a like the Tarurus.Thats why I do not like the Buick La Cross they look to much like a Ford.

I think ford styling was excellent until they went into this boxy as hell phase. Hottest looking cars on the road. Too bad they don't last very long.
