Ford Taurus

Was just looking at the Ford web site. Appears Ford doesn't make the Taurus anymore. Is that right? What's the replacement? Thought the Taurus was one of the most successful cars of all time. Shocks me if they quit making it.

Worm--

I just typed "ford motor company" into my google search and picked the Ford site out of the search results. At the very top of the page is a small window in which I typed "taurus" and hit search. About halfway down the first page of results is a place to order options on your 2006 Taurus. Entering, I was pleased to find that certain options were/weren't available for the 2007 models. I think this means at least a 2007 model, although in light of the fact that Ford was recently passed in sales by Toyota, they might have rethought things. I hope this is not the case, as I have a '94 wagon with nearly 200k. It's a daily driver which gets me something over 25mpg in my 35 mile round trip to work--and this with the air conditioner running. Aside from minor things broken when I bought it six years ago and a radiator replacement (I did find a guarantee from a transmission place indicating serious work had been done, but I haven't had any problems there--knock on wood) I am very happy with the car. If they still have a station wagon available when I finally get a new one, that's where I'll start looking first.

Hi all, finally figured out how to include a photo of the light Ive been talking about... Prepare to be disappointed in my handy work... The foam junk around the light protects the unit when it should fall off the tractor and being kicked around while we are loading trailers and such in the evening hours... Ugly yes - but works great. The light switch is mounted under the seat (keeping it well away from the rain and snow) and can be switched on while driving the unit. Note the 1-7/8 ball hitch drilled and mounted to the rear of the tractor. funny but that little 10 hp tec engin really seems to do everything we ask of it - and mostly at idle... If we run into trouble, its generally the rear tires breaking loose on the grass when were moving something rather heavy. (BTW - this is the same unit that has reverse gear problems - from a different post) This unit sits outside - no shed or car port... Naturally with the motor exposed - Ive had a *LOT* of problems with getting water into the motor when it rains (going into and down the carb).. I typically have to pull the plug and crank it to blow it out. The wooden tool tray over the motor also keeps the rain and snow off the top of the motor - and that milk jug plastic piece on the back keeps rain and snow from blowing into the air filter area (and also helps to keep the motor warmer longer during cold weather). 2003 Taurus strange electrical problem

This is a stange and troublesome problem. I wouldn't want it to happen while passing someone on a two lane road, or crossing a busy intersection. I have no clue about this one, but I'll mention a problem from the past. One day, the Cadillac dealers in one area began to receive a rash of calls about the trunk lids popping open of their own accord. This problem was reported only in one area. By observation, it was attributed to military jet fighters on trainning flights flyovers. Apparently, their transmitters were keying the remote system on the autos. The military never admitted to any transmissions and would not disclose the frequencies and modulation they were using. GM fixed the problem by changing the operating frequency and key code pulses. Look around the next time the problem occurs: Are you passing under a power transmission line, near cell phone tower, etc. Is something keying the security system? Do you or anyone in the vehicle with you carry a spare key fob in their pocket, and if so, is there a possibility its panic button is getting inadvertently pressed? Lets us know when you solve it. I'm betting on some electrical/eletronic grelim.

Do you have two lamps: one labeled 'check engine' and another 'maint reqd"? If so, the 'check engine' lamp is lighted only when a trouble code has been set. 'Engine maintence required' lamp is lighted for scheduled maintence items such as the oxygen sensor. If you have only one lamp, then it has to do both duties described above. So if this lamp is dark, it implies no trouble has been detected or no maintence required. So, no light means no problem detected. Maybe I did not understand the question. If you referring to the checkout routine the engine controller goes throguh when the key is first turned on and all the critical lamps are lighted momentarily as a check, if the 'check engine' lamp does not come on momentarily, this signals a problem in its circuit, and yes, the car can not be inspected. The problem could be something as simple as the lamp is burned out.

I also feel if I buy new it needs to last 10-15 years to be worthwhile. With even less than reasonable care, this is not impossible. Everyone has preferences on new vs. used, but the frugal in me says a vehicle is to get me from point A to point B reasonably dependably. My last vehicle lasted over 15 years and cost to repair would be unreasonably high though I would have put some money into it had I not been able to find a low cost vehicle to last a while. There are the "thrifties" out there that are known as "beaters" and "winter beaters" that will get you around. I bought a mini-van from an estate for $500. It was 10 years old and had about 140,000 miles on it. Ran like new. Not well maintained but ran like new, good tires, and though the body had its share of dings and scratches it wasn't rusted out. For a backup vehicle it would be fine. Turned out I bought it at the right time since the pickup gave up the ghost. I've put on 20,000 miles plus (at least) and it's going strong. I just had to put $1000 into it but the mechanic said it's solid and worth putting the money into it. 24 mpg now, comfortable and reliable. Sat outside over the winter and starts right away, even at -30F. Granted, the heater in a van is a joke, but that's not the vehicle's fault, it's the designer's. A friend of mine offered to sell me one of their company vehicles. A Lexus SUV with a book value of $22,000, for what they owed on it, about $16,000. But that had 90,000 miles on it and I said for my vehicle purchases, it's off by a decimal point! Since I can buy a new Mercury Marquis for the same money, I'd prefer that to the used Lex. I don't need a status symbol. If someone doesn't drive much, it's really worth looking at going the beater route if they don't have an ego. Carry a cell phone for about $5/mo instead of a car club and you can call for help if you break down. I personally feel people should have one in case of someone trying a bump-n-rob, or something anyway. And if the older folks get a flat tire, accident (deer or otherwise) or something it's worth having. Nuff on that. Since I have to drive for work, I need a vehicle. Our society has done everything it can to make public transportation impractical for far too many.

i thought the fusion was the replacement. by the way the ford dealer up here was selling new 06 tauruses at 10995.00 pretty well loaded up. after seeing how toyota is doing, i would say the taurus replacement is the camry hahahaha

The Taurus is available to fleet operators -- rental-car companies, taxi companies, government car pools, etc. It's not sold to the public through dealers anymore, though if you have a dealership with a fleet-sales rep you might be able to get one.

The replacement is the Fusion. The Five Hundred kinda fits -- sort of -- but really is designed to bring Ford into a new market (sport-utility sedan, if you will).

The Taurus was a great seller when it was introduced, but then Ford decided to make it a "styling exercise" and the public turned away from the all-ovals-all-the-time styling (probably to lose their lunches). By then, quality was no longer Job One at Ford and the car was getting old. It couldn't match the Camry for reliability or the Chrysler equivalents for styling. Time for something new...

I thought the fusion was to replace the Coutour.
I'll take your word for it but due to the available engines, a 2.3 I4 and 3.0 v6, I'd still tend to think contour, price ranges seem to put it at fully loaded contour/ base model taurus. Tough call.
It's placement in the Ford food chain even fits perfectly where countour used to live. Just a guess though.

Steve_o is right, if I recall, although I understood from old Ford press releases that both the Fusion and the Five Hundred were replacements for the Taurus, for different segments of the mid-size market; the idea was to offer more options between the Focus and Crown Vic.

IMHO the size chart should read:
Escort
Focus
Contour
Fusion
Taurus
Five Hundred
Crown Victoria

And you also left out the GT. (new) But so did I.
Problem is escort, Contour and Taurus are no longer in the game. I guess we'll see who buys what and then draw our conclusions.

If you miss the Tarurus.Consider a Buick LaCross they look a lot a like the Tarurus.Thats why I do not like the Buick La Cross they look to much like a Ford.

I think ford styling was excellent until they went into this boxy as hell phase. Hottest looking cars on the road. Too bad they don't last very long.
