Sub-Zero vs Viking Fridge
Comments (12)dodge - the public doesn't really know whether LG acquired Viking. They announced a "strategic partnership" in Jan. but there were no details forthcoming. Viking is privately held and there are a few likely scenarios: 1. LG bought Viking or a majority stake and is keeping it quiet. - Not likely. 2. They bought a small piece of the action with an option to acquire more after a long engagement if it goes well. - More plausible, but still not likely. 3. They are going to manufacture Viking badged gear at cut rates in large quantities to replace the high $$$ domestic stuff that Viking can't move in large #'s now. - most likely. It's tough to figure this one out because the investment bankers that control Viking aren't idiots, neither are the Koreans and they've got the gold at the moment. It seems unlikely that the Viking group can get a reasonable return on their investment right now and they aren't going to give it away either as long as it's not bleeding cash. They are probably trying to hold on till things turn around and then sell to the Koreans when the #'s look a bit better for both sides. There is still tremendous brand equity in the name. For the short term I don't think LG will have any effect on Vikings domestic parts and service. It's not a market leader in either catagory anyway....See MoreLiehberr vs Sub Zero
Comments (8)30" Leibherr owner here, now for 4 years with never a problem. I looked at the SubZero, but didn't like the freezer drawer thing: You have to stand to one side to find anything, and I'm much happier with the Leibherr set-up with several drawers, all of which are lightweight enough to lift out onto the counter to sort out, if necessary! We don't use ice, except very occasionally, so I use the icemaker drawer to store stuff in too. I'm one who much prefers the Leibherr door too, with the 'assist' of the lever pushing the door opening. I've used SubZeros and find my arm aches all the time, opening them, plus I know elderly relatives would have problems with it. I find the Leibherr layout to be excellent, and perhaps as a Brit, I am more used to the interior styling. You can store a gallon of milk in the door (most people don't realise it will fit). At 5'3" I have no problem reaching the top shelf either. And we fit all the Thanksgiving leftovers in there too! - it just takes some creative arranging. I did switch to rectangular storage boxes, instead of round bowls though: it's much more efficient in the freezer, and can even slide comfortably under the wine rack....See MoreSub-Zero vs Miele vs ?
Comments (11)@msklh - The Viking was 10 and had been repaired several times including the freon, which I was told in retrospect is equivalent to open heart surgery on a fridge. Should have replaced it then. I went through an exhaustive search for the replacement & there's a long thread on this forum with lots of details, plus back and forth from some really knowledgeable folk. Here's the link http://ths.gardenweb.com/discussions/2312992/refrigerator-again-perspective-please?n=76 My opening was 24" deep and the Viking was integrated. But I didn't have depth for SZ integrated. Long story short: Finalists were Miele & SZ. But we get frequent power outages here which Miele is built for and SZ is not. That was the deciding factor. Most decide on features like layout etc. Many like their Thermadors and that would have fit. But I didn't care for the interior quality and was unsure about service in my area. It also was nearly as much as Miele and I knew their quality & service. I personally loathe the taste of fridge water so water in the fridge -- apart from ice -- is the last thing I'd ever want. I do miss that slim full width drawer in my Viking as it gave me 3 big drawers vs 2 in the Miele. The little deli drawer is OK. It can be removed but I cram it full. The two big crisper drawers are very deep and hold a ton. But the big difference is the openness of the shelves. What I like best is the door racks which are super sturdy and hold all our drinks. The fridge is quiet (there are some faint compressor noises but my Vike was so noisy we could hear it upstairs), temperature is excellent. Freezer is excellent with 2 shelves I like a lot. Aesthetically, I wasn't mad for the look of the huge SZ grill which I would have had protruding from the cabinets with a standard install. Mieles vent is behind the freezer door on the bottom. That makes the compartment higher than the SZ's. The Miele lighting is outstanding. You can see everything even when the fridge is crowded. It was also about $800 less than the same style SZ here. Nice benefit since I had to pay for install. But either one is a good choice. When I compared them feature to feature it was a tough decision....See Moremiele vs sub zero 2021
Comments (4)Avoid Miele Mastercool. Delivered New Mastercool with faulty door. the door gets stuck when closing and needs a hard push or slam to close. Miele refursed to acknolwedge this as defect and refused to fix it. The product is clearly faulty as the fridge in showroom does not have this problem at all. You are going to get poor quality and no warranty honour after purchase. Avoid Miele at all costs if you don't want defects from brand new....See More- 14 years ago
