websites with pics to get style/finish help?

Hi,

I've been getting some great help on this forum in improving the house plans we are working on. Thank you!

Now I was wondering if any of you could direct me to some websites to help in picking out all the "stuff" that goes into building a home.

The style we like is not easy to search for (or maybe it is but I just need some guidance.) We like an updated farmhouse/modern country look and it seems harder to find examples of it than say, craftsman or french country. If you have seen the Midwest Living Idea Home 2007 than that's it (well, mostly it. Some of their choices inside are a bit too modern for my taste.) I'll put a link to it.

I guess since it's kind of an eclectic type style it's not so imperative that we get everything to fit the style just right, but I am really clueless when it comes to this kind of stuff. I need to see examples to know what looks good and pick out what I like. Interior design is definitely not my strong suit.

I also have a feeling that we may have to order quite a bit online since our choices of local stores is quite limited. So if you know of some good websites to get me started in my searching, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks!

I think I'd keep searching through magazines and clip out the photos that catch your eye. The house you have linked is gorgeous!

Also try 'contemporary': decor, interior design, furniture, etc. Contemporary is often a catchall term that means it's NOT Victorian, Colonial, Heritage, or Neo-Modern., lol. But I've found that it's very vagueness impels the authors to explain what they've done and why.

I am new to this forum, but have posted this on the home dec forum as well. I need to repaint an already painted kitchen island. It is made of old beadboard and tin ceiling tiles and painted with either a milkpaint finish, or maybe it would be called distressed. Since repainting my kitchen I now need to repaint it. I want to keep the same type of distressed look and I am not sure how to do it. Is this what glaze is for? ANY suggestions would be helpful. Also, how do I paint the tin tiles? Here are some pics- sorry so large, haven't figured out how to change the size yet !

Hi all - I started a new thread with a new option that I found. Maybe I should have kept it to one thread...sorry about that... @jjdcl - I did a board too of the white subways from HD. Have not grouted them yet as I was still debating the subways, wanted to wait until I was more committed. will post a pic of that actually @hosenemesis - oh no, you see the seam too? I might put my KA mixer over there to cover it up a bit. One of my contractors is coming by today (he used to install countertops before this gig and will get his professional opinion on the job) before saying anything again to the fabricator. My lesson learned from this is no matter what the granite slabyard tells you or your KD tells you about needing a seam, I am definitely going to wait to finish my kitchen design in the future & discuss with the fabricator to avoid a seam if at all possible. The installer said usually they cut things off at about 110-114 and any longer needs a seam. @catlover5 - I posed another thread with a new idea. will also post the white subway board I made next to the BA @flyingkite - your Azul looks very nice and the tile contrast is much more of what I think I want next to the BA granite

Looks like it's going to be very homey! I feel a little bad when I think of the condition our house has been in while our kids were growing up. Now that our daughter is a senior in HS, we're finally getting to the kitchen. When she comes home from college it'll be to a nicer house than she ever lived in. But spending time with them was always the priority, so a lot of good family memories were in the spare, unfinished house! A little OT, but something about your pictures brought up that bittersweet thought.

What brand cabinets are these? I like #2, but in #1's color. Yes, the flooring needs to be done before the cabinets. But you can NOT install tile over laminate. It all needs to come out down to the subfloor. Then the subfloor needs to be assessd for support and deflection. Not all homes have a stiff enough support for tile without reinforcing.

Thanks for your tip as well, meldy. I'll try a search with the word contemporary in it.
