Actually they did make them good, even back then. Why do you think the imports were so popular? American cars in the '70s were gas hogs of substandard quality. All cars built back then were of abysmal quality in comparison to todays cars. I'm not suggesting imports were perfect at all; however, every car in the 70s had rust problems. The problem with imports back then was that very few mechanics would touch them, so dealer maintenance was necessary and expensive (and therefore often left undone). Guess what happens if you don't change the timing belt on an interference engine? It snaps and the pistons hit the valves, and well, you can guess the rest. If your car has over a 100,000 miles on it, and the engine is ruined due to a snapped timing belt (due to poor maintenance) you could put a couple thousand dollars into an eight or nine year old car, or cut your losses. What choice do you think a lot of consumers made? BTW, in 1985, Honda and Toyota sales were growing but were far from being at the volume of domestic cars sold at the time. Of course you see more domestics; thats simply due to the fact that more domestics were sold. Japanese car companies concentrated their sales in markets were demand was the highest, like on the West coast. You live in Illinois, the demand for gasoline was and is much higher in California, and probably always will be; therefore, there was a greater demand for fuel-efficient vehicles. Hence, more Hondas and Toyotas were sold there as opposed to where you and I live, the Midwest. Despite what you may believe, everything is not the same everywhere, johndeere. Power & Associates, they are one of the only non-for-profit consumer advocacy groups left in the country. They accept no advertisements, corporate donations, and don't allow their name to be advertised by manufacturers. Say what you will, that they're biased towards foreign cars, or other garbage like that - but it will be completely unfounded.

Are you insane ? Why didn't you take the car to a rad shop and have them recore it ? They take a big pair of snips and cut off the core size you need from stock and reconnect your own upper and lower tanks. You now have a new rad. $100.00 plus tax. So, where is the water leaking from ? The rad or the engine. Makes a BIG difference. If the head gasket is leaking that bad you ain't driving the car. Something else is wrong. your first mechanic went away probably because someone or government was looking for him. Bottom line is, you got a PROBLEM. Find someone that actually knows what they're doing or send it to a dealer. Spend the money. Mind you if the trans is slipping send it to the press. You have what is called a disposable vehical.It's done it's time. If your husband is thinking of putting liquid glass or saw dust into the engine "somewhere" you might want to slam his testicles down on the toilet seat. It ain't going to work. Actually i'm wrong. This thread is surely far from its original intent. I posted my findings based on first-generation series of the W 48XX and T 98XX. Miele in now into the second-generation of this series and I have seen posts by Larsi regarding some front door/drum gasket issues, and there were some vibration concern by another; Larsi came to a resolution, and I do not know what happened to the person with the vibration issues. But to be fair to Miele the washer is a tad short of third-hundred pounds so floor construction will always be a consideration with that amount of weight. I recommend anyone buying Miele’s to purchase the extended warranty or wait until Miele is offering the extended warranty as an incentive to buy perk. Have Miele certified installers do your installation to avoid any fine-print issues (e.g., lightning strikes). From what I have learned Miele made these models for North America for several reasons: Competition was offering large capacity, and customers were inquiring about this and other features (e.g., bleach dispensing). They were losing sales to people who were turned-off or did not have access to 220V in their homes. There is no doubt that Miele stepping into this territory was stepping-out of their comfort level and their expertise with their existing products. However, I do believe Miele is making a concerted effort to better these products. Will the competition outpace Miele? That is yet to be seen. I do appreciate that Miele products are not “gimmicky.” Would anyone care to provide insights on the "quality" of the internals compared to their less expensive counterparts? This is tall order, and you really have to be at the machine while disassembling it to see how Miele has thought matters through. I can say that Miele uses highly-skilled labor to build these units as the different fasteners, and materials they secure require a deft hand. One clue to Miele’s comprehensiveness is that the back of these washers and dryers are finished similar the sides and front. In others words you can have your Miele washer dryer in the center of your room and the backs would be perfectly acceptable in an exhibition setting. On another note, the styling of these units is exceptional. It would take another long post to describe how well the styling on these units is thought-out. There are some very complex styling cues that all come together and make it look easy, but in reality that are very difficult to accomplish. Miele products remind me very much of Bang & Olufsen, and Apple.

Thanks for the reassurance about the garage door opener signal buttons. A friend told me it was not wise to do this so I stopped. But for years before that, with various cars, I had a separate visor remote left on the visor or I programmed the buttons. In those days I was working and commuting, parking at malls and so on. Now, retired and the pandemic, I don’t use the car much. No one’s ever messed with my cars but for once. Decades ago. I was in college, in the city, around one of those medical areas that are built up and often nested close to rough or semi rough areas. Parking was always hard to find, but years before I had rented a place not far from that busy area, so I knew of a street where I could park, nearly all day ( back then). At around 3:30 pm on a nice sunny day, I’m walking up the hill towards where I had parked my VW bug. I could hear the cheap alarm screeching as I approached. There were about 3 or 4 youngish guys standing around it and the engine compartment door was cocked up. I’m not sure what they were going to do. Maybe steal it but first shush that alarm (easy, just yank). I can’t recall what I might have said to them (I was under 5’3’ and not big). I wish I could recall what the body language and interaction were. Maybe they saw that the owner had arrived and closed the engine door. I had no problem getting in, fastening my seatbelt and driving away. Another day (probably later) around the same area, across from project housing, but just a block or two from the big intersection, I parked my VW and began walking down the hill to the intersection and college. I was in my own world. A young man came up to me and said something I couldn’t make out. (Maybe duh me?). I asked what, and he repeated, ”Mame, could I have your purse?” As he said this, he moved the front of his jacket aside to reveal a good-sized hunting knife tucked into his belt. That was unnerving. I had a chemistry exam that day or the next and knew I needed my Hewlett-Packard calculator in my purse. That just zipped through my head, I wasn’t aware that I was calculating anything. But perhaps the entire gestalt of the scene — noon, sunny, lots of people a block or two away, my not wanting to be hurt or robbed and that he had good manners, had said mame and please (new to armed robbery). And his lanky hand was not holding the 7” knife. It happened so quickly, and in an instant I realized that somehow I’d gotten on the downhill side of him. I took off screaming and running. Noon, sun, city, trolleys, traffic, people here and there and I could have been bleeding and screaming. No one paid any attention. But I was free of him and had my purse, calculator and keys.
