mixed question - tires and SUV

I was all ready to post a question about getting new tires for my SUV .... I started first by doing a search on "tires" ... saw a post about "why would anyone want an SUV or truck over a car" and got sidetracked .... Thus, this now, mixed, two part question ....

Part 1: Need a new tire on my SUV (one is 75% more worn than the others - the "driving" rear wheel?). Bought this BEAST (04 Nissan Armada) used last year. Impulse purchase. Came with 20" custom wheels and Vogue tires. The Beast has always seemed to easily hydroplane and am hoping a new set of tires will help. Stopped at local tire shop and got my next cash surprise $$$$ Ka-ching --- only two brands available locally, least costly are the Coopers at $180 ea. Anyone have any suggestions for tires? Seems the selection is somewhat limited due to size (oh - current Vogues are 305/50 R20). I never heard of Vogues and assuemed they're some cheapo tire.... but after todays web search, guess they're highly prized by some ...

Part 2: This Impulse purchase is killing me in the dept department. Additionally, I've recently decided that, if I ever want to get into med school, I'm going to have to quit my 15+ yr engineering job to finish up my last few pre-requisite requirements. This mean, I'm going to need to make heavy reductions - especially in the debt department. I tried to unload The Beast recently, and found that I'm so upside down that it's nearly impossible to go to a 10K vehicle w/o a substantial up-front cash contribution. After reading the "why own a SUV" post, I'm thinking that I really do need to reconsider my choice of vehicle. My only requirement is that a vehicle be safe (both in personal protection and reliability), be able to transport two large dog crates (inside), and reduce my debt. I'm open to suggestions on another suitable vehicle. I keep going back to the Nissan Xterra and even PT Cruiser ... but can't seem to overcome the cost-difference barrier..... And, if I do trade-in, what do I do about the single bad tire on The Beast (showing cords - it's that bad)?

Sorry for the unbelievably long post, but that other discussion about SUV necessity sort of "moved" me ....

It's interesting that one tire is worn way more than the others. If you choose to keep the Armada, I definitely would have the alignment checked or you could chew through the next expensive tire pretty fast.

I looked on-line and saw 305/50R20 tires for under $140 each (Goodyears and Kumhos). You could have someone local mount the tire and install it. On the wheel, though, that won't be much cheaper than the Cooper price you mentioned. I have no idea if any of these will handle better in the wet than the Vogues, but I'm sure there are reviews on-line which can help.

You have two problems here. One is that you're talking about a stonking big tire. The other is that whatever you do should be done in pairs, as mixing sizes and brands of radials is not recommended, especially for a vehicle that doesn't handle that well anyway.

I think your cheapest options are to suck it up and buy another Vogue or to just chalk this truck up to experience and trade it in without fixing the tire. You'll get dinged for it on resale, sure, but it's not like you'll get any more on trade for having four serviceable tires.

I also think you really need to consider timelines. If you can hold on to the truck another couple of years, barring any major political or petroleum catastrophes, you'll get out of being upside down. OTOH, you'll likely have to replace more tires by then, there may be other repairs as well and you'll be paying more for gasoline as the price continues to climb. There also is the consideration that SUVs may distinctly fall out of favor and it will be worth even less in two years than it would be if SUVs were still popular.

Some options to consider: I'm not sure what you mean by "10K" vehicle. 10,000 miles? 10 grand to buy (neither the PT nor the Xterra fill that bill)? You could consider buying a "certified used" car -- they typically are checked better than other used cars and come with a longer warranty. You'll pay a little more, but you should be able to consider it more reliable. Strongly consider vehicles which don't hold their value particularly well because they make a zillion of them every year or the car is a little outdated. I don't think they make the Ford Taurus wagon anymore, but it would be a choice that would meet your needs. Or a lower-end minivan -- not the ones with leather and all, but a 4-cylinder Caravan or Windstar or something.

You also could see if there's a way to finish off med-school pre-reqs with courses offered at a time which would allow you to keep your engineering job -- or take classes on-line, if that's possible. If you can hang on to your job a while longer, you can bank some bucks. You'll need them while you're in med school.

(BTW, no problem with the "unbelievably long" post!)

Thanks Steve for the suggestions ... I guess I didn't consider buying just one Vogue ... but will put that in the mix just "in case" ... and your insight to the future of SUV's is something else I hadn't thought about... I really am not excited about this vehicle. It's beautiful and bold, but the total cost is just a bit much for me. what I meant by 10K is the cost - thinking of buying used Xterra. I've always felt that my needs for toting the dog crates limited me to only SUV's, but it won't hurt to check out the wagons, etc! Med school, yeah - what a lot of work. I'm working on one night course a semester - retaking lots of chemistry & physics. Seems that, at this pace, I'll be totally grey before applying. Thanks again - you've given me a few other things to consider! I appreciate your help.

To repeat some of what JAL said, "Find a local L&G shop and have them come out on a service call. Consider the expense tuition." Concentrate on two words......expense, tuition. If you have never changed a tire on a car (spare tire in trunk to flat tire on ground), this could be a real teachable moment for you. If you have any kind of video capability, you could video the the process when the hired tech comes and does the work. Alternatively, you might browse Youtube for how to vids on changing flats on a car (how to install a spare tire). Your naivete (no offense intended) in not grasping that the soapy water would make visible bubbles reveals a lack of basic skills/knowledge in things automotive. So, yes, you do need to learn some stuff about basic maintenance for sure. I say if you can learn to operate a ZTR mower you should be able to learn some other stuff you need to know in life. I realize this is an old post, but wanted to share. My disclaimer is I am not in any way recommending these ideas below, I am just sharing with you what we found works for us. Here is what we found to be the easiest way to get my 91 yr old mom, 5' 3" 150 lbs.. We have worked with her with a walker in the house walking forward up a half step and backward up the step. (Outside step sold on Amazon) Walkers legs can easily fit on the ground around it. We place this on the ground next to the door. Have mom place herself with heals almost touching the step. She carefully steps up backwards, then with the walker steps back to the car frame (Honda mini van) She reaches back for the seat with her one hand to locate it. (We use a gate belt at all times) then bends at her hips until her backside touches the seat (we have a towel on the seat-dad pulls from the drivers seat to pull her in. Then she turns to get her feet in with our help. After reading about the plastic bag We may try this under the towel. If there is enough room we have also tried from the side stepping forward up to door opening and turning slowly to have her back to the seat before sitting. This method is generally used at the house. We have a heavy duty wood step, same height as the outdoor step but a lot larger. The walker fits completely on top of it. Which makes turning easier. We find all cars/vans are difficult because the doors on cars do not open all the way for easy access. Back seats of mini vans/ many cars have to much of a gap between the door and seat when the person you are assisting is afraid of falling or has a history of falls. Love hearing everyones ideas. We are tempted to have a lift seat installed for her safety.

When I got rid of my mini van I bought a Honda Pilot. It's the more economical version of the Acura MDX! I liked the looks of the MDX and the bells and whistles, but just couldn't pay $10,000 more for basically the same size SUV. The Pilot actually can seat 8 and not just tiny people in the back either. The 2nd row seat is actually able to shift forward just a bit so the third row has plenty of leg room if you have bigger kids back there. I don't know about full size males, but the average female or average 12-14 year old fits fine. The other great thing about this SUV is the third seat is totally flat into the bed of the car so if you don't want to use the third seat you have a full cargo area that is flat and very functional. We got the DVD player and the boys loved it. I have the navigation system in my current car, but my kids are older now and we don't drive on long trips very often anymore. It is a solid, dependable, zippy, easy to handle SUV. It's actually built on the Odyssey platform so you don't get the trucky feel of a SUV, but it's a sportier car to drive than the minivan. I also think the Volkswagon Toureag is way cool looking!

The Honda CR-V has been top choice for several years. This year (2013) Toyota is trying to unseat Honda's grip on the market and reviews so far indicate that Toyota has finally hit the mark. Toyota's 2013 model includes a base engine, 2.5 L, 4-cylinder matching Honda's 2.4 L 4-cyl offering. Last year, I went shopping for a used Honda, Toyota, or Subaru and came away with the Honda. I was hesitant about the smallish engine for that size vehicle, but that concern went away when I test drove the vehicle. Honda;s engine has variable valve timing and it works flawlessly. Honda wrings about 170 hp out of that mill and it is surprisingly smooth; The 5 speed transmission shifts are smooth and the conntrol suytem logically seeks the correct gear. I rate Honda's engine-transmission as the best 4 cyl engine I have ever driven. For 2013, Honda has tweaked 4-cyl engine tuning and bumped output to 175 hp. I bought the Honda CR-V last summer and used it for a 3000 mile trip - loved it. One caveat: The CR-V, and others of similar design have a big blind spot to the rear when backing up. Objects near the vehicle are unseen. I recommend a backup camera. It is available, but I don't know in which year that began. Mileage around town is 23 to 25 miles/gal; highway at expressway speeds is 27 to 31 mpg. Among my associates, two have tried the Toyota RAV-4, was dissatisfied and changed to the Honda CR-V. However, that could change for the 2013 models. But for a used vehicle, you'd be shopping for models older than 2012, and for these, I recommend the Honda. Toyota did offer both 4-cyl and 6-cyl engines in the RAV-4. I recommend the 6-cyl. The gas mileage is about the same as the 4 and it is a much better engine for the application. The Honda CR-V is available in front wheel drive and AWD (all wheel drive). The AWD is engaged at all times. When the system detects that the front wheels are slipping, up to 50% torque can be supplied to the rear wheels. This comes in handy for getting through a slick spot, but in my opinion, is not as good as a true 4-wheel drive ala Jeep. Because the sysem is enaged all the time, there are restrictions. The vehicle should not be towed (front wheels on a dolly and rear wheels on the road); Instead, it should be put on the bed of the tow truck or trailer. All tires must be the same size. Mixing a new tire with nearly worn out ones can cause the torque transfer clutch to drag. AWD also adds weight. Additional components are the rear drive shaft, rear differential and drive axles, and transfer gears. These parts add maintence items. In the used Honda market in my area, the AWD option holds value. For same models of used CR-Vs, the ones with AWD commands a price addition equal to the cost of the AWD option when new.

It won't cost very much to operate your SUV if you don't drive it much. Maybe you can arrange your schedule to minimize vehicle use, maybe not. It is something for all of us to think about.

Thats just the cost of a tank of gas in the near future.Ask around you might find a set of slightly used Firestones cheap.Might want to get a few extras for spares however.
