Stone Veneer or Real Stone for elevation upgrade

Other than real stone costing much more in price, are there any real benefits to have the real thing ?

What maintenance is involved down the road ?

We used real stone veneer....it's real stone that is sawed to be thin like man made stone. It's easier to install, but looks great...just like real stone as it is!

The real thing (including Annie's version) looks real. The colored concrete only looks ok on TV but not in reality (opinion).

Also, stone has a proven history, who knows how the pigments in the faux stones wear after decades of UV exposure.

Real stone veneer is probably the best of both.

My house is not finished yet. Possibly by next week. We plan to start moving some things in this weekend if the locks are on the doors. The edge pieces of the granite bumped up the cost. I think the mason said the corners were $11.00 each. He searched for the largest ones he could find. The other option was to have the mason cut the stone for corners. Then you add the labor cost so it would probably equal. The basic stone price was close to the Owens Corning price. I believe the price for the chimney and interior wall for wood stove came to $7,000. including labor which was a bit higher than our contractor expected. This was the first time the mason had used this product and he was very pleased with the results. He is working with a contractor who builds log homes and he stated he would offer this product. We are all happy with this project.

Best thermal / vapor barrier under Stone Veneer?

Vapor barriers go on the inside of framing, to prevent water vapor produced inside the house from migrating into the walls [where it can condense and freeze or cause rot]. House wraps go ontop the exterior sheathing to prevent liquid water [blowing rain, roof leaks, missing flashing] from penetrating. The last time I looked was 3-4 years ago, but I recall reading that plain old tarpaper was as effective as Tyvek.

HI, we are building a house and the craftsman/modern house on the plans has Stone veneer, which I love, however I cant find the name of the stone, nor can I find stone I like that is similar, my problem is that what the stone sample looks like on line or in the box sample looks nothing like the real thing. SO what I an hoping...that you will post your picture of your stone and the name used! I kinda want something Bold too. PS. My garage door is Black, roof is charcoal and front doors are black too~ but honestly if i can just see THE REAL picture of the REAL stone, that would be very very Helpful~~ THANKS

Have you gotten a quotes? We quoted both when building 6 years ago, and they were virtually the same price.

See if you can go to a stone yard. Most have samples of both. Once we got there, we discovered that up close, the manufacture stone was more one dimensional. Real stone has life in it. It stood to reason...we don't like fake leather or wood-look floors either.

I recently saw some artificial stone pillars. It looked like a car bumped into one edge of it. Underneath, it just looked like concrete and pieces of stone.

Ditto on the pricing.
