squeeling chirping AC

Toyota Sienna

When starting up it give a tiny chirp, sound like squeaky/slippling belt. But when I turn on the AC the squeeling becomes much louder and worse. If I turn off the AC the noise stops. Then when the car warms up, you can have the AC running without the bad noise with only an occasional chirp.

What does this sound like? Belt, Bearing, Pulley.

Is there an easy way to check?

Sounds like a worn or loose belt. the AC compressor pulley has a clutch. It spins easier when the clutch is not engaged. when you turn the AC on the clutch engages and the resistance to turning is much greater...hence the squealing gets worse.

Thanks,,, does it makes sense that when the car is fully warmed up (5 mins of driving or so), the noise almost completely goes away?

I ***wish*** we had a $200 utility bill! I think all our efforts to reduce the bill - blowing in insulation, replacing single pane windows, getting new high SEER-rated AC's (split system) - were all for naught. SRP raised the rates each time and erased the hoped-for savings. It didn't help that I insisted on an AC for the shed so the dogs could stay cool. Anyhow, I am sick, sick, sick of the heat!! All this talk about "cooling down to the low 90's" just makes me hotter. As soon as the dewpoint drops a little more, on comes the evap for about a month or two and then I'm turning it all off. No furnace here; there's not enough winter to warrant turning it on.

I would replace the cap. It sounds like a 4 microfarad (uf), 370 volt run capacitor. Does it have only two terminals and look something like the one linked below? To discharge it after the power is off, short the two terminals together using a piece of insulated wire or a plastic handled screwdriver you don't care about. Also, short each terminal to ground just to be sure. Time also discharges capacitors, usually pretty rapidly, but short it just to be sure, even if the power has been off awhile. There's gotta be a weak or loose battery somewhere (not missing b/c you would have heard it before now). If you can't see a little door on the front of the unit, try twisting it off the mounting plate and look on the back. If you can see a manufacturer's imprint or label on the front or the back you can check out their website. We have Firex (not the ones that were recalled), here is their website. It can really be annoying, ours were going off too while the house was under construction b/c the electrician's apprentice wired them wrong and *left* for the day weekend with them chirping! There were other problems so I just threw the main breaker. I'm assuming that after a year in the house, that's not your problem! You didn't flip a switch you've never flipped before, did you LOL? You can throw the breaker (should be labeled) for your detectors while you hunt down the problem, but don't go to bed with that breaker off! Vacuum them off while you're at it. Instead of replacing the sliding glass door, you can add another one designed for exactly that purpose. Sound attenuating drywall such as Certainteed Silent FX Quick Cut or Quietrock can be attached to the existing wall. Or Green Glue can be used to add layers of conventional drywall. You haven't fully described the space you wish to make quieter. Is this an attached home, or a condo apartment with shared structural connections? The trouble with soundproofing is that so called "flanking" sound defeats many of these approaches. **** Positive that's a bird? There are strange alarms on all sorts of items nowadays. One poster discovered the chirping she was hearing was an alarm on a chainsaw.

My guess goes to belt slip when the compressor clutch engages.

The belt may slip from not enough tension or wear. In the olden days, the compressor was driven by a single V-belt. Your belt may have multiple, small v(s) running on a matching sheave. When new, only the sides of the Vs touch the sheave and friction grip is good. As the Vs wear down, the belt back can come in contact with the top of the sheave and reduce the load on the V-sides. This reduces the amount of torque the belt can transmit and it slips.

With the old, single-V belt, the belt was servicable until it sank far enough into the sheave to come in contact with the bottom of the groove. At that point, its grip diminishes. It should be replaced before it wears this much. The rule of thumb for the single-V belt was to replace when the top surface of he belt became even or below the top edge of the sheave.
