Change belt and all hoses?

Our 1995 Crown Vic Lemonzine has 55,000 miles in 10 years; 54,987 by us. It is slighty dustier than the day we bot it. No plans to replace it. All maintenance by the dealer as per the book since new. It lives in never never land (California).

Should we change the belt and all the hoses? No leaks. Belt looks good I don't see any cracks. Might be some but I didn't see em. The heater hoses would be a bearcat to change.

I don't find any published schedule on these items.

86 olds here with 22,ooo miles,, the heater core on a car died at about yr 2000 - all hoses are still going stong with the heater core in a bypass loop with a original hose.

With both"old" cars change the upper radiator hose.
Install a new heater core in the old Olds !! I'd say the two cars have quality equal to or better than the '88 Honda Accord...
We have a '97 Saab and a '96 900S, over 250K miles on both, , with the original upper - in good shape, but I should change them !

Hi , first off if you remove the guard over on the top of the engine you will find a nut for the main shaft that connects to the clutch end . you can put a spanner on here and prevent the shaft turning whilst removing the bolt for the clutch .

Engine off, key in pocket for the following: On my CC129 (which I'd hope is similar--horizontal engine, front pulley, belt drops thru 2 pulleys and then takes a 1/4 twist (both ways) and then goes back around upper deck pulley), I attach the belt first to the engine pulley, then the front pulleys. With the deck all the way down and on the lift mechanism, start the belt on the upper deck pulley at whichever side is easier to reach and "ROLL" the belt onto the pulley by spinning it with the belt pressed to it. This is not an easy thing to do and can pinch your hand if you are not careful (gloves). You should completely detach any tightening bolts, springs, etc...on those 2 front pulleys BEFORE trying to get the belt on. AFTER the belt is on, it is relatively easy to pull those things into alignment (which tensions the belt). I've seen quite a few different pulley arrangements on those old CC's over the years.

You'll have to learn how to slither and crawl and slide on a cardboard creeper, to do any repairs. Or run the front wheels up on a couple of ramps, set the brakews, and crawl underneath! A hydraulic floor jack (Mechanics) is of great help, too. and, if you have them you can set the front and back up on jack stands. After getting it up in the air, wiggle it well, to see if it might have a mind to fall on you, after you get it suspended! I use large pieces of cardboard boxes tto slide under it. When they get dirty, just discard them. After all is ready--crawl under there and sketch how the belts are on there. orient your drawing well! Believe me, a novice at this work will need something to show the correct routings of the belts! Now, if you might be lucky wnough to get the correct manuals, you can forgo the preceding. Try: www3.sears.com or any form of that combo. Sears/Craftsman has a terrific web-site you can access. It just takes some patience getting into it. HTH:Rusty Jones

The first one i did, and i had never done an MTD type of belt replacement, turned out to be easier than first thought! I found, the deck belt can be removed from the engine pulley, and tied out of the way. Then depress the brake/clutch pedal all the way down, and clamp it down! This releases tension on the belt. From there, you must look for any other things that may impede removal and replacement, and from there on, it is self-explanatory, more or less. I had the tractor setting on four jack-stands, so it was much easier to work on. Some manufacturers do invent tricky things that do get in the way of belt replacement, but with a careful look-see, it will eventually show the path to replacement. Of course, you can always take it to a repair shop, a statement that makes do-it-yourselfers cringe, but if thats the only way out--do it!

If you ever do take this car on any long trips, YES !!, by all means at least change the belts and the upper radiator hose, maybe all of them.
Go to a Ford forum and find out what the weaknesses are ...

The correct answer from a pm point of view is yes, replace them. Having said that, I replace belts when I see a lot of cracks. I leave the hoses on my stuff alone unless I see a problem with them or am doing some other repair that requires removal of one or more. Heater hoses always make me nervous. Too easy to create a leak in the heater core, and that's usually hard to replace. It's a b*tch to start with no problem and create one in the name of prevention.
