Selling a broken vehicle.

My 02 Mazda B2300 has spun a rod bearing and I would like to sell it. Does anyone have any suggestions for selling a vehicle that basically is in need of an new engine? It has tonnes of new stuff, rear springs, front shocks, alternator and tensioner, new tires, coolant reservoir... and probably someother things I can't remember. I've spent 1000s of dollars on it in the last year and now it needs a new engine or a very expensive repair, and I can't afford any more. I've bought a beater that will be less expensive to fix (or I'll just junk it if it dies), and I'd like to sell the truck.

Auction? Part out? (never done either one) Or should I just advertise it as is?

internet is good. craigslist is a good place. its not hard to find similar vehicles with bad motors or trans to get an idea on what to ask. if you pay a shop to put in a used motor, than that is $$. a new motor would be $$$. my friend works at a small shop and they have to tell people to haul away their non-running cars after they balk at the repair cost. he says he can buy cars for $50-100 but he is in a unique situation. its hard for an average joe to find nice cars with bum motors.

I've had it advertised on 3 different websites, Craig's included. 3 calls in 2 weeks with a price reduction after the first week. Some people are telling me to sell it without disclosing the rod bearing problem since it still runs fine and is only noisy when it's warmed up. I can't do it though.

John-g: 2006 Ranger Reg cab,3Ltr,auto,LB. Picking it up tomorrow, (errrrr, maybe the burned out shell?!!) What I don't like about the Ranger is the pick list. You can't mix and match things such as trim. You are kept within that package's option list even though most of the parts are small and interchangeable within packages, and are 15 minute bolt off/ons in the service bay. Another is the "Pick and Choose" courtesy option list that has various trim components listed around 2-400 bucks, what a joke. With this you can pick anything you want up to 1000$. They had a chromed spider rim which I thought would look nice rather than the stock rim, and I picked 3 other options as well, totalled 930$. I felt pretty good about it. After looking closely, it said 400$ bucks "each" for th e rims. So that means for 1000$, and if you don't pick anything else, you get to buy 2 Rims?!!! Am I buying a 2006 Ford Rickshaw? Like my granddaughter says .....Duhhhh! When I looked at the dealer, he gave me that, "Hey, don't blame me, I didn't make up the promotion" look on his face. Another thing is, you will note that none of the basic packages really shines. What I mean by that is everything is painted, or two tone with flat black, unless you go to the top XLT models, then you get a chrome grille. There is no hint of chrome that makes you proud. What shines if anything is a steel silver painted wheel. How long I plan to use it? Well I'm 60 now, and I keep trucks until they're in the same condition as John Candy's rental car in the movie "Boats,Planes and Automobiles". So my trucks go for a good 10 years. I just brought my 86 Comanche to the scrap yard today, and everything worked on it. Fix my own cars, except inner engine components. I bought it in 97. I'm on a tight pension budget, so I guess it'll be the last one, and it will outlive me. Andy

My car's job is to get me from here to there, and back, without a lot of hassle: as long as it does that, it stays. Plus ... without it costing an arm and a leg to do it: I have other important places to use my money. For those of you who like the small ones and have a yearning for a bit sporty and with some get-up-and-go ... ... have you considered Mazda? They have had some performance qualifications, and, lacking the rep of the Hondas, Toyotas, etc., can often be obtained ("used", that is) for a much lower price for the same level of car. Mine is over a quarter my age ... and I'm no spring chicken: it's 24, has cost me some money, lately, and may be about to cost me some more, so I'm wondering how much longer that it may go, with something over 180,000 mi. on its odometer. I'd like to get a standard tranny, as, being scarce and undesirable, they're cheaper - and use something like 6 - 10% less gas than automatics (which is a concern, not only for scarcity of the resource and pocketbook, but environmental reasons). Plus, unless someone is ready to crawl up my tailpipe, I not only shut off the engine and coast to signal lights that just turned yellow ... but am inclined to do it when travelling downhill, as well. As some of you know ... over seven years ago when I was travelling in my little Dodge "Colt" out from my townhouse in town to sleep in uncle's house prior to its sale after his death, to make the place look lived-in, often it was late at night and the road untravelled ... and I found that I could coast for over 16 of the 20 km. going out there (but the return journey was usually during the day, with more traffic, and coasting was much reduced). After the Mazda got hit enough to crookedify a wheel a few years ago, not too long after I got it ... I spent more to repair it than I'd paid ... but it takes a lot of resources to dig ore, smelt and manufacture a new vehicle, along with the petroleum-sourced plastic that they put into them ... ... and repairing requires few scarce resources and fuel/energy, is mostly work-related. ole joyful

Much good advice and Lucky did see a vet this morning. He is rapidly improving which seems to rule out infection. Still some nerve pinch going on between his shoulders. At the vet's he got up and walked around some but still acts tipsy. Poor kitty is blowed up like a balloon from being hydrated. Not much that can be done other then wait. He has anti-inflamatory medicine and probably got a free pain shot. Keeping him cooped up in a spare bathroom. If he by chance has a disease I don't want him touching any of my other five cats. The vet is the professional and can do many things. I grew up in farming country and look at animals different then most. I saw a hurt animal that still had a chance or he would have been put down. Still a puzzle what is wrong with him. He was in the road laying on his side. It was -25 C. and blowing snow. No broken bones or broken teeth. No skid marks. No bumps or injured joints. He can walk but acts like it hurts all over. He was generally well fed. I did find round worms and that was treated. Worms can poison a cat so that is a possible root cause. My best guess is that he crawled up on top a vehicle engine to be warm and jumped out when someone drove the vehicle down the road. It was snowy so that may have saved him from being skinned up. Who knows? Good news is that he seems much better. Still pretty rough. Needs to start eating more and drinking water on his own. Wondering what the future will bring for him. lyra

Hi cuppa, Sorry, I can't tell you. But daughter recently imported her three or four year old car on her return to CA, so I'll ask her - she may have some advice. I don't think that there'll be a heavy rate of duty - especially on a vehicle over 10 years old. As maxwell said after my reference to maybe buying a fairly recent model standard transmission car, which was hard for a dealer to sell as no one wanted a standard, standards get a low price on resale. I'm pretty sure that your Mom would be better advised to import it. But I don't know for sure - sorry. Whatever - don't ask me to get involved in family politics. joyful

Advertise it as-is. Maybe someone has a similar model with good mechanics that they've rolled or put into a tree and as a result are looking for a car with a good body and shot mechanicals? You may have to wait until Christmas when more people are driving around full of drink, driving into electricity poles, ditches, rivers etc...
I've made some great bargains in the past from 'spares or repair' ads, getting a shell from one place and engine & 'box from another.

This one is simple. Aquire a practical estimated repair for repairing of the vehicle and a practical estimated cost of engine replacement and configure the total blue book value of the Mazda then dedust one of the estimates from the book cost and this is the answer. Either that or configure the repair of the vehicle verses the amount you would receive in selling it, if the profit doesn't exist or is not worthwhile then you know it isn't worthwhile to you or the supposed buyer.

Option next>>>> List it in several places with it's gloryfied additions you have added along with its physical appearnace and demand serious inquiries only of a BO. (Best offer)

FYI, I had a '98 Mazda Millenia that had some body damage but that I had reciepts for the past year totalling ~$3500. All new shocks/brakes, timing belt replacement (car had ~105k, maintenance recommendations were to replace the belt at 115k). New tires all around Everything worked: AC/heated leather seats/sunroof/traction control, etc.

Then something went afoul and the transmission would not go into reverse. I was done putting money into it. FWIW, my mechanic said he would not put a used or rebuilt trans in because they always come back to him and he wasn't going to take the money from me to put in a new one.

At the end of the day, I gave it to a young guy at work. He drove it away. Drive worked fine.

Moral of the story is: with the exception of really desirable or classic cars, the residual value on a non-running vehicle is little to nothing.
