Tires Size

Hello,

I have a Mazda 323 Model 94. The recommended tyre size for the car is 155/80 R13. However, I bought used ones and latter realized that they are 155/70 R13. I have now put on the new ones and apparently it did not make any difference. Do you know if it can cause a problem in some way?

They are somewhat undersized. Your speedometer now will be inaccurate (you'll actually be going about 5% slower than the speedometer says you are).

And you should check the load range of the tires (it's a number stamped on the side of the tire, like 89H or 75S or somesuch, most likely listed after the size) against the load range that Mazda recommends (it's in your owner's manual or a tire store can tell you). The number on the tire should be the same or larger than Mazda's recommendation. If it is not, you will not be able to carry as much in the car as you may have before.

From your post I'm not exactly clear which way you're recent change just went, however 70's series tires are a lower profile (i.e. shorter that 80's series); the 155 is the width (in mm) and its the same for both sizes; as is the rim diameter (13 in.).

If the original tire specs are 80's series it means that the speedometer was calibrated at the larger diameter and will read high, as Steve_o pointed out, with 70's series on the car.

IMHO, it shouldn't matter worth a darn.

I've found tractor supply to be a bit expensive on tires. Unless you need new or an extra set of rims why pay extra. I've gotten good prices from internet like stop n go tires. They have free shipping specials on carlisle. I have no affiliation with them other than having bought from them. Summit racing also has good prices on carlisles, but never seen them have any shipping discounts. Hope I'm allowed to recommend sources--didn't check site rules on that.

What your missing is the tire clearance on your tractor? First you need to see (measure) how much clearance you have between the tires and the inner fender area, top of the fender, and the outer side of the fender. IMO the differance between a 12 vs a 12.5 is minimal, the wider 12" rim blows the tires out more and the 1/2 inch may cause them to rub the fenders or rear axles. the difference between 27-8.5-15 are guite abit from 29x12x15. If I had to have the ags I would just buy the rims, put the ags on them, and have a extra set if you plan on keeping the tractor for a long time.

I've been through the same dilemma with my GT series tractor. I just put Carlisle Tru Power lug tires on the rear. I opted to keep the turf tires on the front because they're actually a pretty good all-around steering tire. I don't think chevron-lug-type tires on the front would serve any benefit unless you had a 4x4 tractor, which you don't. I haven't found a true agricultural rib tire for lawn and garden tractors, but you might want to look at the Carlisle Snow Hog in a 15x5-6 for some ultimate steering traction. Other than that, I think you're pretty much stuck with turf tires in that size.

Thanks for the replies. I had a clue that my car will go slow now, keeping in view the small circumference of new tyres, at the same acceleration. I think its good to have higher reading on the speedometer then actual as it will save me from tickets :)
