Knock, Knock...May I Come In?

Hi! My name is Lisa and I am a dishaholic! I'm new to this forum, but not to GardenWeb. I've lurked for years in some of the Family and Home forums. I found this one when I was googling for dinnerware...was I ever surprised when GardenWeb came up in my search. I should have known--in my best "Homer Simpson" voice - DOH!

I've spent the last two weeks reading old posts in my spare time (what there is of it anyway!). I'm so relieved to know that I'm not alone in my "disease"!

But now, thanks to all of you, I've got a new addiction..."tablescapes". Up until last week, I'd never given a thought to "decorating" my table. With a husband and two grown sons, I'm lucky if I can get everything ON the table! So today...I went to the $ store and picked up six placemats and a Valentine' Day wreath (grand total $7.29 with tax) and then spent a gift card at Peeble's and got four small leaf-shaped dishes and one large one (for next fall). They were on clearance for $4.50 for the small ones and $6.50 for the large one (reguarly $12 and $20)...and I still have $ left on my giftcard!

Thanks for all the great ideas you all have posted. You're certainly VERY talented. And this forum seems much more friendly than others! I think I'll be spending lots more time here.

I hear your knock, but "dishaholic?" Never heard of such a thing (LOL!!!)

We're moving soon, so I live vicariously on this forum, waiting for my things to come out of the boxes in mini-storage. Like you, I don't think I've ever done a "tablescape" but I sure have enough stuff for one (hundreds!) The members here ARE very talented, and not only at decorating and tablescapes. We are great shoppers, and I see you have the requisite skills to join right in. Welcome, and make sure to post lots of pictures.

Welcome Lisa...I think I've seen you before on Home Decorating... Glad you found us. YOu are right, this IS a wonderful and very friendly group here. However, since You 'Knocked To Come In' I must warn you... There is A VERY STRICT RULE, That You Must Agree To!! >> and, that is,

Gardengal, I'm not going to re-read all the material that I might have spoken about....I don't believe I ever suggested other methods don't work....or cant be used. I just pointed out that for the vast majority of houseplant growers, this method of leaching on a regular basis is not according to how the majority treats their plants. I contend it is not good soil practices to water...in the way that was described, every day. Plants need nourishment....however given. By watering in usuch manner as described, I suggest the plant is not receiving any nourishment. It would be like the comparison...albeit unusual...that the person sitting down to a meal and after the smell has permeated the nostril, the meal is taken away and replaced with another to repeat the same thing, over and over and over. How much of our bodies would last very long? I suggest plants are no different. If as suggested, the number of plants so testified to, do indeed thrive in the manner described, then I don't have much to suggest otherwise. All I said was I didn't believe such method was good for a plant. I don't think I'm in the minority. As far as hydroponics, I am well aware of that method and other methods to promote plants. I don't use such --but there are many a pot-filled houses that give evidence it is being carried out widespread. In Ontario...its against the law to sell a home that has been used as a gro-op in this regard without informing the buyer as to its former use. Seems, this method of bringing up plants leaves a definite aroma to the walls that doesn't easily leave. That's a bit off track I know....hydroponics was mentioned so I felt a little levity was called for. I am totally for experiencing other ways of doing things. If it is for some....not for others...including me....I don't find it degrading anybody who feels compelled to try it. I invited discussion....pro and con....that is all I intended and suggesting otherwise is looking for off topic disrespect.

Well, I LOVE my recently added knockdown ceilings. Ya wanna know why? because I had POPCORN ceilings before! DH and I did all the popcorn removal ourselves. It was torture, but well worth it. We had a company come out and do the knockdown..DH really wanted smooth ceilings but yes, our ceiling was all wavy and would have to be "floated"and would cost a lot more...so we went with knockdown. We had it sprayed and troweled so it is very big "blobs" (for lack of a better word...you know what I mean, I am sure). This is a 1970's ranch we just purchased a few months ago and are totally renovating. In my last house I had popcorn...and in the house I grew up in? POPCORN. Geez, I hate that stuff! I just did the 1st coat (primer) on the knockdown and yes, it is hard...I have to apply pressure on the roller to make it in all the little grooves and whatnot. My shoulders were bunched up in knots at the end of the day. I guess I don't have it so bad cuz my house is small (2000 sq ft) and the celings are low (8 ft) but I am not looking forward to doing the paint. I keep putting it off. I actually like the look of KD on walls, but my DH hates it so we didn't add it to the house. My DH was a builder and said just what you did...knockdown (and popcorn) is used to disguise shoddy workmanship. We needed it on the ceiling, but not on the walls. Good luck, I am sure your rooms will be GORGEOUS when you are done!

Welcome Lisa! This is the best group of "enablers" on the net, but just remember Jane's words of wisdom above. You'll get lots of support to buy/try new settings for your dining pleasure here. We're off to a friend's house for dinner tonight (shucks, wish I dared to take my camera.....she does lovely tablescapes!)

Welcome Lisa!! Sounds like you will fit right in here and we love to have others join us. This is a VERY friendly forum with very talented people. But I'm not sure what Jane is talking about "buying tableware YOU DO NOT NEED"...of course, we NEED it Jane!! (as you can tell, I'm seriously addicted!) LOL!!

Thanks everyone! I've got NO problem playing by the rules...I have plenty of "enablers" outside of the forum to blame for my new acquisitions! LOL My mom-in-law got me hooked on Pfaltzgraff LONG ago and my husband is no help either. HIS hobby is fishing, so if we happen to be shopping, especially somewhere with a sporting goods store AND a housewares store, he's all too encouraging of my habit. I'll be looking at yet another set of salad plates and he'll say something like "If you want them, get them. Besides, you know you'll want to come back later for them and they might be gone!" Those words "they might be gone" send me into a mad panic...better get the dinner plates too! And then SOMEHOW we wind up in sporting goods....and he has a new fishing reel...hmmmm....yes...I think I CAN blame it all on him! LOL.

Lisa, welcome & you are right, this is one of the friendliest forums on the web!!!

Your husband sounds just like mine, mine is a total enabler, if I listened to him all these years, we'd be in the poor house! LOL

He supports me in anything I get into & even this obsession!!!

I guess I'm considered an "oldie" here but I do seem to disappear once warm weather hits, but I'm here most of the winter!

One rule you were not told & that is WE LOVE PICTURES, so take lots of them to share!!!!

I'll jump in here and add my welcome also. Lisa, I'm so glad you found us.

It sounds like you might have a nice collection of dishes already--can't wait for you to share some pics with us.

Even if you are not ready to show a tablescape, you could still share pics of some of your pretty dishes or decorative items--we love to see the bargains other's find while shopping!

Hope you have fun ready the older posts, and we will look forward to getting to know you better.

Oh goodie, another fellow dishaholic! Yes, I agree, this truly is the nicest group of people on GW. Everyone "plays nicely" and is so darn talented and fun. They're always willing to share great ideas with the group, and have I gotten some good ideas! Welcome . . . now get to work and show us some of your own tablescapes ;^P

Hi Lisa, I'm pretty new here too. I've just been posting for a couple months. I'm being inspired by the tablescapes, but I'm not a dishaholic, because I just have nowhere to put more dishes. I'm "thinkin' on it", though. I'll be watching for YOUR tablescapes. - Gail

Hi Lisa. From the sound of your post, you BELONG here, LOL.
I'm glad you joined us. I'm not to the dishaholic stage yet..but not because "they" haven't tried to influence me!

I can sort of relate to your DH's method of shopping. Mine is a golf nut, so its fine for me to shop while he does his thing. LOL. Makes me really like golf a lot.

I was just thinking, when I joined this Forum two years ago, that it mostly was holiday stuff. Then during the off months when almost no one posted, some of the gals started showing dishes and tablescapes, and its been so much fun ALL year to be part of this Forum. You won't find a friendlier bunch! Jim and all the gals are just wonderful. And loads of photos to enjoy and inspire!

Hi Lisa. Welcome - this has to be the most friendly forum. And everybody is so encouraging. I did not have a dish addiction until I started on this forum about 6 months ago!! Now I am hopelessly addicted. :) Looking forward to seeing your table settings!

aaaaawwwwww..you guys are SO nice! I was surprised to see so many posts when I checked in tonite! THANKS! I promise to post some pictures. I plugged my camera battery in just now so I'll try to get some pictures done tomorrow after work and post them.
