When driving, do you pivot your foot between the accelerator and brake or do you actually move your foot each time?

I've seen people do both, and my Grandma still uses 2 feet to drive her automatic.

Not sure what is the safest way.

My $.02 is that pivoting your foot is safer. If you need to use your brake, there's not typically any reason to use your accelerator. And vice versa. So why give a foot a chance to "misfire" and contradict what you intended to do?

I learnt how to drive in a Standard..
My Dad is English, and when we moved to Canada, drove his first Automatic car. I always remember him telling me to make sure that I tuck my left foot near the door as close to the seat as possible. that way, I'd always use my right foot for both the accelerator and brake. I have later tried using both feet in an auto, and it just doesn't feel right! Personally, I think that it is safer to just use one foot.. as Steve o said, less room for error!

thanks, all questions answered. rio I LIKE THAT! my mtd $800 tractor manual xmission requires that i disengage the mower deck to backup. it is a pain really, i often wondered if any tractor allowed you to mow in reverse, not that you want to but it is just eaiser to back up 2' w/o having to disengage then re-engage the deck. as for cruise control apparently keeping your foot on the pedal at a steady pressure is not hard. i don't know, my mtd being a manual i can move both feet any time anywhere. it seemed that cruise control was a huge benefit, appearently not. as for gas consumption, as i stated the difference in these 2 engines is almost 50% more displacement so i was curious about how much more gas that would consume even tho the hp is a small difference. frankly, i doubted the gas usuage would be noticed but i wanted to ask. i plan on mowing tonight, my mtd has been acting up. i'm not sure if it'll mow or not. tomorrow i plan on going to the husqvarna dealer again and to the jd dealer 1st time. the home depot yard machine for $800 is almost the same as my mtd walmart $800 mower that i've used for 7.5 years and it has been a good mower. if it does require serious repairs i think it is money spent that may not be worth it. $800 vs $1500 vs $1650 the husqvarna and john deere have to out last the yard machine for twice as many years to justify the cost. not sure what to do other than hope my mtd runs another season! :) thanks, tom

Hmmm... Is the original one still an option? I think it would actually be less obtrusive and there's a larger surface to "hit" so it strikes me as probably easier to use. In any case, couldn't be happier with the two I put in my kitchen and pantry. The down side? I can't have them in the bathroom because there are toe kick heaters under the sinks. Meanwhile, I keep pushing on the toe kick heater to turn on the water in the morning when I'm sleepy. The one in the pantry from head on. The one in the kitchen (we have since moved that hose up and out of view.

That is very difficult to do. I was able to acomplish it once by concetrating very hard. The problem is once your foot follows the circular motion of the hand, a pattern is set and is very difficult to break. Interestingly, it is easier to do if your use your right foot and make the '6' with your left hand. This is a very interesting phenomonem. It may have influence on a car driver's action with the coordination of his/her hands and feet. If you talk with your hands while driving, it may impact what your foot does. And what happens in an emergency maneuver?

I'm glad to hear you're doing better. I'm sorry you twisted the other knee! Don't push going with out the boot until told you can. It will ache without it even when you are allowed out. Be sure you are walking heel to toe, carefully, and have a shoe that is as close to the same height as the boot. THINK about walking, instead of doing it on auto. You may be twisting that leg when you walk which will twist the knee you already twisted. Make sense? I'm not to awake yet. And after twisting it, it needs time to heal, also. Were you told to stay off of your ankle as muchs as possible? It only slowed me down, didn't stop me walking. The day after I got my boot, we left for a 90th b/d party in KS! I can't even remember the scenic train rides, the county fair........ It was extra tireing, tho. It did limit me some, but I couldn't slow down much. I even went camping with it, and not in the motor home where I have more room! I am just wondering why you had to stop walking. As for the Byetta, my dad is on it and he says he never had the nausea that some have. He also says he didn't have the weight loss. Tho he has lost weight, I am not sure that was it. I think it's just that as he gets older, he just can't eat as much. I think he eats less than half of what he did a year ago. He's been on the Byetta for several years. Tami

Probably the only time my left foot has touched a brake pedal is when there's a boat behind me.

"Safety" is far too overplayed in todays world..

In the comfortable and efficient operation of a motor vehicle ,there are other important aspects to consider.
One is ergonomics, the pedals must be positioned in relationship to the feet allowing quick and easy pivoting from the throttle control to the brake.
If a man must lift his whole leg in order to control his vehicle, then it becomes tiresome and too much time(measured in micro-seconds) is spend in the braking process.
But of course the two pedals must not be too close together.
Today's cars with their adjustable pedals, seats and steering do allow for more comfort and greater ease of operation...
Stop and go, go and stop is too repetitious and tiring, so I switch feet sometimes, poising the left foot over the brake control- but of course never riding the brake..

It's always lovely to be stuck behind a vehicle where the brake lights don't go off when it starts accelerating. Makes me wish i were a brake mechanic charging $80/hour, it does...

I'm lazy and pivot my foot from the brake to accelerator. I can tell because I have a dent in my floor matt and the right edge of my brake peddle is wearing.

I use both feet. No, I don't use them at the same time. I don't ride the brakes.

I have driven and own VWs which have very close pedals so I have pivoted my right foot between accelerated & brake pedal.

Geeze, this must be a slow day.

I pivot. Either works.

Probably the only time my left foot has touched a brake pedal is when there's a boat behind me.
I can't figure out how he is driving in a lake.
