Fungus Gants: Any more that I could do?
Comments (9)It doesn't look like your research resulted in anything useful. Fungus gnat larvae, in potting soil, feed on peat moss particles, the slough from roots, and even tiny healthy roots. Using cinnamon or barley water would be useless. The adults seek out moist (usually overly so), mucky potting mixes in which to lay their eggs. The larvae will thrive in those conditions. Providing a very porous medium is really all that is needed to prevent population from building up. My preferred mix consists mostly of pine bark fines....very little peat.....and I haven't seen a fungus gnat in many, many years. Sometimes, just easing up on the watering frequency can help but that's not a sure thing unless something has been done to improve the consistency of the potting mix....from too fine and mucky to coarse and porous. The other useful tool in fending off these little pests is a naturally occurring bacterium, Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis, which kills the larvae once ingested. We are able to apply Bt as a product called Gnatrol or by dissolving ordinary mosquito dunks in your watering can....See MoreDoes anyone do natural wood cabinets any more?
Comments (84)I strongly dislike painted wood. When comparing wood to painted wood - wood is always timeless - paint will always go in and out of style. We are building a new house and my brother in law just finished building his new house. He has grey kitchen cabinetry and an espresso island. He will be doing the white subway tiles as well. He has a ceiling full of canned lights that look like a space ship is about to land on you. Congrats - he has a standard modern American kitchen. I don't want a standard American modern kitchen that EVERYONE else has. I want old world. I want the warmth of old world. My brother in law's kitchen looks like a modern, industrial cold kitchen. In our kitchen, we will have simple colonial maple cabinets stained pecan (dark brown). They are beautiful and the grain makes the cabinets have depth and character (not like a flat paint). Our island will be a lighter stained maple to add brightness to the kitchen. There will only be 2 upper cabinets left open for glass or for a mesh (I haven't decided yet). There will be some open shelving. The lighting is all dimmable and and the lit areas are on separate circuits so I can affect the mood. I have pendants over the island and a pendant over the kitchen sink. There will be 2 sconces as well. None of the lighting can be sourced from a big box store - and they are beautiful. It's been frustrating trying to gather all of the materials needed for my kitchen because almost all of the stores carry only the standard American kitchen stuff - and many of the designers/salespeople want to push everyone into buying into the "modern American kitchen style" that everyone else has. I puke on the modern American kitchen!...See MoreDo you have any advice to give this exterior more curb appeal?
Comments (20)Thank you all so much. I appreciate the input. Celerygirl, seeing the colors imposed on the house is amazing. I like them all. Probably favor the top one. Can I bother you for the paint name? Love the door, would never have picked something like that! Houssaon, The belly board is the the strip that separates the bottom brick from the upper siding? It really does make a difference in the sample house you posted. It would run from the left side of the house, over the garage doors, little porch area, over the first floors windows and then ends at the right side of the house? I really like that idea. Thank yo so much. Ohio, Thank yo for you recommendation. Is there room for taller windows, which I far prefer, and if so, would you install windows with or without mullion? K Laurence and Decoenthusiast, I agree, however, we listed our house, expecting it to sit a while and it sold in 2 days. Our rental has fallen through and our timeframe for remaining in the area lengthened longer than anticipated. We have a trusted contractor who can supposedly do it all in 2 months (fingers crossed!!!!). If this falls through, we have no where to go :( Thank you all so much!! p.s. what do you think about the little porch area? can anything be done to enhance/change the railing....See MoreDo Any of You Have a Bosch Refrigerator?
Comments (7)While we wait.....I have one in my Florida home so can’t open it to see. I am curious as to why this is important? ETA: What I don't like is that you have to diligent in closing the doors. Very easy to think they are closed when they are not. You will hear a chime if left open for a certain amount of time. We also have it connected to our phones and we get alerts if it is open....See Morea2gemini
